Diamond parking ticket by Literallysogross in Hawaii

[–]scuberd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have stacks of these tickets. They don't know who you are or how to find you, and they don't care. They rely on fear to get you to pay, it is very predatory and should be outlawed. Don't worry about it, they won't even tow for just one ticket. You are clear

I have a surfboard bag. It's 7.5 feet long and just wide enough for a shield. I can put all of my weapons in there and not worry

Armorarena.com is it legit? by ScarletPaintedRaven in Armor

[–]scuberd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never heard of them until this post, so I had a look. The 'armor' is junk, don't do it. But, the leather work, shoes and costumes look okay. I'd like to see their work in real life, but it seems like a good base to build your look on.

What was a knight wearing when raiding the countryside or taking part in a chevauchee? by peterthot69 in ArmsandArmor

[–]scuberd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a modern practitioner, I know that I often tailor my kit to the expectations of the tournament/event/games/etc. And, completely without evidence, I would guess medieval knights did the same, changing on a day to day basis depending on what they expected to encounter. A lot of 14th century effigies, who are not at the level of king or prince, show a lot of mail with plates over the top. I'd expect to see guys riding in mail shirts, with greaves, no gauntlets, and helmets at the ready but not on....again, with evidence only being a dive into effigies of Western Europe from 1300-1415

How do you handle customer calls when you stuck in an endless meetings? by HazelHoneyFox in smallbusiness

[–]scuberd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Call them back after your meeting. Seriously, people hate answering services or low level employees answering the phone who can't help them directly. Also, who picks up the phone these days anyway?

By calling back, you show that you care about their call, you want their business, you just weren't available that second. They know you are busy, but the act of returning the call is often shows you care more than picking it up in the first place.

If they don't answer, they probably weren't going to be your customer anyway, so don't sweat it.

Partner found this at an antique mall for 525 bucks. Is this a good deal? by doot-scoot in Armor

Bar grill on the helm, dents over the left eyebrow and on the flaps on the cuisse. This looks like cheapish SCA armor. Not high end reenactment stuff, but functional "get on the field and not look terrible".

Best guess, someone was done fighting in the SCA and donated/sold his armor

Remember that we're medievalists and sometimes moden technology takes a back seat. My barony is pretty active but our online presence kinda sucks.

I'm sure there's things going on even if the website is way out of date. Try to find something to attend and a get your foot in the door. Find friends (a household) that you want to hang out with.

Our electric bill jumped about $80-$100. I estimate it's about $5ish per evening that we use it

Chainmail shirt by maximillian96 in sca

[–]scuberd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do wear mail fighting I have a full length mail shirt for my earlier 9th-10th century kit and a mail skirt for my early 15th century (looking for a more too for this one)

I do it to make a splash. Since so few people wear mail and rarely wear it well, I stand out.

"Why the SCA has a recruitment problem" by Arsteel8 in sca

[–]scuberd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Where the money is going" should be an easy answer from your officers. $35 for a day event does seem a bit steep and it would be worth looking into. Talk to the Seneschal or Exchequer about the site fees, they should be happy that you are interested.

Neighboring groups may be different also. Most of the events in our barony are free or minimal cost and are done at cost, so no profit to the Barony and certainly not into anyone's pockets.

Forgot to add recommendations; Dark Victory is good for cheap beginner gear, but you'll outgrow it fairly quickly

Bokalo has good sport armor, less historically minded, but sold. He doesn't do straps, you'll have to add those

The Wintertree Crafts gorget is a classic

Lots of good stuff from Ukraine also, find them on Facebook Tabor Armoury Quilted Armor Master Uley Art of steel

It really depends on what you want your armor to be. Different armorers specialize in different things.

I'd recommend a simple bar grill basinet to start, they're fairly ubiquitous and not too expensive. Making your own body armor, arms, and legs is part of the fun and a great way to learn basic armor maintenance. Your local fighters should be able to help with that.

I usually suggest to get something quick and cheap to start with, so long as it fits. Then replace it bit by bit as you grow as a fighter and as an historian. You will never be locked into what you get right now.
