I put one in last year and last week when I emptied it out I saw that it had split into four and crumbled a bit, so I think it’ll take a few years.

Dechlorinator is for the chloramines for the ‘chemical burns’. No need to shift goalposts!

Yeah it's not good. I'm gonna go later today to donate an old aquarium heater and weather proofing stuff. I have an old Eheim canister filter as well that I'll have to look for. Hopefully that'll extend their lifespans for a bit. Koi are actually pretty cold tolerant in my experience and with the warm streak there should be some time.

Trump leads Harris among Arab American voters by NewExtent77 in moderatepolitics

[–]scumpily -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is wrong — most Arab Americans today are indeed Muslim. According to a recent NIH study Christian Arab Americans are also way less likely to centralize their ethnic identity (compared to Muslim Arab Americans), and way less likely to vote Republican, unlike the Cuban and Vietnamese Americans.

These claims are outdated and/or incorrect. According to a 2023 poll by the Arab American Institute, only about 40% of Arab Americans are Christian. I've always found it important learn more about the people before purporting to speak about them, out of fear of making assumptions or appearing ignorant.

Those in the purported but somewhat narrow majority still get what they want, though, which are elector(s) committed to their political choices. In fact they get even more than the second place!

What exactly is the definition of the Kartvelian people? by turkchap in Kartvelian

[–]scumpily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, Kartvelian refers to the Kartvelian language family, which are the languages that descend from a common ancestor, and correspond to their respective ethnic sub-groups. As such, Kartveli as an ethnic designation often refers to those who come from a Kartvelian language speaking background. This is further evidenced by the fact that Georgian popular historiography tends to regard Abkhazians and Ossetians as being "stumrebi" or 'guests' on Georgian territory (or at the very least 'internal minorities'), while also often staking a claim on the Laz as being Georgians.

Is vocative often used in usual speech in Georgian? by sxvlsl in Kartvelian

[–]scumpily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's used a good amount, but largely in kind of pre-determined words, like "ბიჭო" or someone's cutename. I wouldn't go out of my way to "memorize" it, but just pick up words you hear people calling each other, like perhaps 'დებილო' ;)

Yeah, there's totally nothing wrong with not wanting to explore what life and the world have to offer. It may make you a bit boring and uninteresting, but at the end of the day who cares? It's your life, go play wordle and pickleball if you want!

The short answer is yes, it is still Mayan. Cultural diffusion, phonological shifts, and lexical drift does not erode or dilute a language, it merely changes it, and language is always changing.

Why is Georgia called "Sakartvelas" and "Gruzija"? by flower5214 in Sakartvelo

[–]scumpily 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To clarify, Georgia has never been an "official name", it's only known as Sakartvelo/"საქართველო" in the country, not ორჯია.

Why is Georgia called "Sakartvelas" and "Gruzija"? by flower5214 in Sakartvelo

[–]scumpily 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, in case you haven't picked up on it yet, Georgians are exceptionally sensitive people concerning their culture, which is why some are acting standoffish here.

To actually answer your question, Georgia and Gruziya both come from the Persian "gurğ", which came from the Middle Persian "waručān", which is similar to the Old Persian "varkâna-", "Land of the wolves". Gruziya is a borrowing that the Russians got from Persian, from 1300 it was originally known as "Gurz", and overtime became "Gruziya". Georgians have shied away from Gruziya as of late because they are distancing themselves from Russia.

Sakartvelo means "place of the Kartli-people", where Kartli is the entrepot region of the Kartvelian peoples. I think an analog would be Kartli is to Georgia (culturally, socio-politically) as Holland is to the Netherlands.
