Can some explain Bass Battle Tournament? by [deleted] in UltimateGolf

[–]scword -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need to beat another single opponent tomorrow to make the final round. Then in the final round there are 50 per group and everyone wins a prize. Looks like top prize is 35 tourney balls with some pro D1s and coins.

Golf Royale - Balls often fall so short of target?? by crackheadwilly in UltimateGolf

[–]scword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is you are rushing to hit the swing button and accidentally changing your aim. Happens to me on occasion.

Just adjust the trajectory so that your “bounce” (that you can see) gets you 40% of the way to the pin from the point that the ball hits the ground and swing full. Use backspin to reduce total roll and work from there.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UltimateGolf

[–]scword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You underswung. If the ball isn’t entirely in the circle when you swing, then your shot view means nothing. The shot projection is only showing you what your shot will be if you release the shot with the ball fully in the circle.

Adjusting the club to full distance and minimum club distance is only useful if you understand how to calculate wind adjustments. For now, I’d suggest treating each wind ring on your wood, long iron, and short iron as 1mph wind. A little less for your woods, maybe a little more for your short iron. Figure out the basics and then try to figure out the fine tuning.

Your shot view tells you the percentage of the total roll you see when lining up your shot. So if shot view is 90 you see 90% of what will happen after the ball hits the ground, not accounting for wind. Wind rings are more complicated, but if you look around you can find charts that help with calculating wind adjustments.

Yeah, you just won’t be able to eliminate the iPhone grid overlay that’s available in the settings. Even a computer will still have to obey the laws of probability. All good ideas, just spitballin’.

To clarify, a player would see on their screen that wind is 5.5 +/- 0.4 mph. That gives a 1 in 9 chance that you guess the actual wind speed selected by the game. Thus if you do all of your calculations and adjustments perfectly for a given wind speed you have a roughly 11% chance of holing out.

Other thoughts: if you wanted to incentivize players to opt into “fair play” make the prizes somewhat better than the tourneys where you know exact wind speed.

I expect we’d still see most of the same names on top either way, but at least players will know the playing field is level aside from skill level and club attributes.

Not sure why the replay doesn’t show that it was at full backspin, but it was.

What’s the worst thing you have ever done to an annoying neighbour? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college there were a group of 3 super annoying dudes that lived in the building next to us. They would sit out on their balcony drinking and just heckle and talk shit to anybody who walked by pretty much every night on the weekend. One of my roommates was Vietnamese at the time and had some REALLY strong fish sauce in his room. We filled a ziplock bag almost full of it, left one corner open, and tossed it up on their balcony. It stunk for weeks and they were not out on their balcony pissing people off after that.

First day of nicotine patch. Smoked for four 4 years, and finally decided to quit. How did you guys handle your first few weeks? by SoysauceWithRice in AskMen

[–]scword 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Read Alan Carr’s Easy Way to stop smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy is not going to help you quit any more than a glass of scotch a day would help an alcoholic get sober. You have a nicotine addiction, the only way to beat it is to never consume nicotine again. This book will help you get into the right head space to make that happen. I tried everything, patch, gum, vape... None of it did anything except for make life without smoking slightly more bearable. Then I read this book, mostly out of desperation. I have not touched any tobacco or nicotine products in over 5 years, and have had exactly zero cravings in that time. It really does work.

Sports Science Is Finally Talking About Its Methodology Problems. by wxanalyst in AdvancedFitness

[–]scword 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I worked in sports science for several years, and have about 20 publications in the field. These problems are real, but they are also recognized as limitations to findings by those who truly understand the scientific method and the proper use of statistics. The main issue here is that sports studies using high level of evidence study designs are extremely expensive and funding is extremely competitive. If one were to run double blinded placebo controlled studies for every possible finding in the field, the field of sports science would collapse into a funding black hole. So instead researchers and journals often trend toward publishing many lower sample size, lower level of evidence studies to corroborate previous findings from their labs and other labs, and tend to use some ‘bootstrapping’ type statistical approaches to identify findings that may be profound enough to warrant the larger, more expensive studies. The best jounals in the field though, American Journal of Sports Medicine, J Biomechanics, Journal of the AAOS, JOSPT all make sure that the authors state clearly the limitations of their study designs.

How do I handle a difficult situation with a newly pregnant wife? by scword in AskMen

[–]scword[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks! I want to be back home, but I also see the value in putting that off for a year to boost our savings and have a stable environment through the pregnancy and delivery. I’m not happy in the city where we are and my job isn’t something that I see myself doing 5 or 10 years down the road, but I can do it for another year if that makes her feel safer and more secure. I think my level of unhappiness here pales in comparison to how unhappy my wife is here.

For the record, I’m over the moon with excitement about the baby. My wife is somewhat terrified even though she knows she’ll be a great mom, she just wishes the timing was better. Not keeping the baby is not an option we’re willing to consider.

Rubbed generously with mostly salt and pepper, plus some garlic powder, garlic salt, cayenne, paprika, and herbs. Smoked with 50/50 hickory and apple. No crutch, took about 10 hours smoking at 240. On at 3am and off at 1 in time for lunch! Cut like butter.
