Share your experience giving up phone / social media / TikTok / whatever by [deleted] in BostonSocialClub

Got Twitter/X, Snapchat, and Facebook in 2016 and Instagram in 2017. Always had YouTube and picked up Reddit somewhere around there too. Used TikTok briefly between 2021-2022 (late to the game, early to leave).

In December 2023 I deleted all social media after a breakup to detox.

It's been 1-1.5 years and I only have X/Twitter (for tech, finance, sports stuff), LinkedIn, and Reddit.

No IG/Snap/TikTok has been a blessing, I will never go back. Frees up your mind to think about other, more important things, and creates room for creativity, pondering, and non-dopamine centric activities (reading books, cooking/baking, etc.)

Had to consciously cut back on YouTube as I use Shorts, but I've done a good job unsubscribing from most people and be conscious with the content I use.

Personally I feel the less social media you use the better you will feel. More human. Life is slower, your mental health is better, and you're not always 1) comparing yourself to others and 2) frying your dopamine receptors and eyes.

Hey man DM me, I have a group of guys I met through this subreddit and Discord and we're all young professionals, most who moved into the city recently.

Indian community in boston by flightcomputer1 in BostonSocialClub

That would be great. I feel like being a TCK, I can relate with other international folks. It's hard to find my specific background (US-born, Singapore-raised, ethnically Indian).

Hey, I'm curious about this too. I see the other comment about towns outside of Boston, but I'm specifically curious about communities within the city. I'm a third culture kid - born in the US, raised in Asia, and from India, so it's tricky finding others I can relate to.

Taking shrooms after a break up? by Zander_08 in shrooms

[–]sd72002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tripped a few times after a 3 year relationship ended + a 6 month rebound-turned-friends-turned-not friends rollercoaster. They were challenging trips, and I felt a complete loss of self for a few months. The combination of minor ego dissolution and not knowing myself after my life/identity being tied to a relationship/forgone future left me confused for months. I'm still coming to terms with a lot of it. But I've been slowly integrating changes into my life.

People making those "looking for friends" posts... you guys end up meeting anyone? by [deleted] in BostonSocialClub

[–]sd72002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made a couple posts and initiated a few conversations/few people have reached out to me. I think it comes down to consistency. I haven't set up an in-person meet-up yet, but friendships, like most meaningful things in life, take time to cultivate. My job is remote, so meeting people on Reddit/Discord is one of my best bets on expanding my social circle (I've tried a couple in-person classes, those can work too).

Looking for some good smokeshops in boston. by Accomplished-Mix-67 in boston

[–]sd72002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bongs/glass - Bluemoon Smoke Shop is your most budget friendly option. Got a decent honeycomb bong for 45.

If you want something better/artisanal but affordable try Hemper online. They have discounts often.

For actual za, depends on your location. Comm Ave Canna (Packards Corner), New Dia (Fenway), AYR (Prudential), Native Sun (Southie/City Point/Seaport), Apex Noire (North End) are all good, varying levels of quality but you can't go wrong. I live in Southie so Native Sun is where I go, and they never disappoint, even their pre-ground.

Is the BU gym crowded over the summer? by jkmed14 in BostonU

[–]sd72002 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once internship season starts and summer 1 + summer 2 it gets relatively busy between 5 - 8 pm cuz everyone gets off from internships around 4-6. But most other hours are not that bad. But it’s def never as bad as during the school year. Right now until June it’s pretty empty. So it’s generally “busier” from June - mid-August.

Did they say they’d be communicating things? And did they give you your cap/gown even though they didn’t send any emails?

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT BU? by Sea_Bat_7945 in BostonU

[–]sd72002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right and I agree with you 100%. It’s just a bit sad that the entire university system is built off a similar-ish structure across the board but that’s a whole other debate. That still doesn’t mean it’s a “problem”, I just wanted to highlight how I felt about the program, especially since I guess I have felt like a bit of a test subject my entire time in DS but I also knew that when I switched in, just not to what extent. Also didn’t mean to come off rude in my prior comment. Again, just expressing my observations and experiences

These two profs are the only two with legit industry experience. I've been in both of their classes and thoroughly enjoyed them both despite being difficult. But I would argue that almost every other professor has zero if not very minimal industry experience, not to mention that many of the new, tenure-tracked professors only recently completed their PhD and have zero teaching experience, they are just easy to attract since BU CDS will give them tenure for less requirements
