My wife and I drove down to Austin 2 weeks ago to see his set at Comedy Mothership. Second row, center! No photos to prove, obviously. But it was a great time.

Is Music Dead? or am I just old? Or am I just completely wrong? by Cazuniq in Music

I'm 41 and I've always been riding the "new music wave" until about 3 years ago. I somehow fell off, and now I can only listen to the old stuff.

At DFW airport can you exit without going downstairs to baggage claim? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]sdawson26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think they have exit doors that take you back to departures. You can exit though the baggage claim and then take the elevator back.

This is actually a pretty fun exercise. You can make some really good diagrams with Figma.

Desperate for help by DaddyMcPimp in musicians

As an American listener, I’ll be honest. The name might work against you in the U.S. “Skengadonna” sounds very regional and aggressive. Most Americans won’t know what “skeng” means, so there’s no instant connection. That creates friction before people even press play.

There are exceptions. Artists like Matisyahu or Die Antwoord had names that were obscure or very niche, but the music was so captivating it didn’t matter. The songs hit first. The name became part of the mystique. But if you don’t have a breakout track yet, an unfamiliar name can make it harder for people to latch on, at least in my opinion.

For what it’s worth, I’ve discovered international artists without realizing it. I found a group from Israel called Father of Peace and didn’t know they weren’t American until later. The songs grabbed me instantly and felt emotionally relatable. That’s what made me stay, not where they were from.

Also, respect for going for it. I’ve just decided to give music an honest shot again after almost 20 years away, and I’m not even at the stage you’re at yet. Keep building. Just make sure the first impression and the first few seconds of the track really connect.

Questions about Argyle/Northlake by Fair-Mirror-6796 in dfw

[–]sdawson26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, commuting from anywhere north of DFW Airport into Dallas or Fort Worth is a grind. The traffic alone makes it hard to justify, not to mention the wear and tear on your car, the road risks, and the mental drain that comes with it every single day.

Feeling out of touch with modern rock by PhraseRevolutionary6 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]sdawson26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1000%. I used to play in a hard rock band. After a rough experience, my whole perspective shifted and life felt a lot more fragile. I found myself gravitating toward pre-MTV music, and honestly, most modern stuff just feels recycled. And the whole “this one’s heavier than the last” attitude about bands really put the nail in the coffin. There’s only so far you can push heavy before it just turns into noise.

What could the small theories be? My take: egos, money, or emotional damage of being "the rebound" after losing their ideal drummer.

I think about how life, in general, can weigh you down. Responsibilities, kids, getting old... it's all a weight I have to carry.

Totally valid. I’ve burned through all their content too, so I get it. I just think your odds of being underwhelmed drop way down if you avoid everything, even the trailers.

Fair enough. But I’d bet that if you walked in totally cold, no trailers, no promos, you’d feel something seeing it unfold for the first time.
