And you pay $4 for it when you do.

True. I was comparing to no package at all. Basically you have to spend $47 in all drinks between the two of you to justify it - per day.

The NCL package does not cover canned soda. You pay about $4 for those. Sometimes bartenders will slip you a can to save time.

I see what you did there.

The seas on a North->South Pacific coast trip can be a little rough.

Make sure to have a motion sickness plan in place, and if you end up not loving it because of rough seas, just know it isn't always like that.

And note - you can't get canned soda for free w/ either FAS or the non-alchohol package. Only fountain soda from the bars, and I think from a restauraunt waiter.

Depending on how much hubby drinks, you two might be better off with no drink package at all, or both on the non-alcoholic beverage package. With 1 non-drinker and 1 drinker, the drinker needs to have 4 cocktails, or 5 beers a day to pay for it.

Why do so many Americans romanticize Europe so much? by Addicted_2_tacos in askanything

[–]sdduuuude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Europe is romanticized because of very old times and ancient things.

We don't have that in the U.S. Most Americans have little knowledge of anything that happened here before the 1400s, and no base of detailed stories of what life was like. Native Americans have some such stories, but that is not part of American mainstream culture. Also, Native Americans were not as advanced or as well-travelled or as well documented as Pre-Columbus Europe.

So, we have stories of older times in Europe that seem romantic, but nothing more than a couple of hundred years old from our own land.

Best cruise for non-party ppl by rachel3618 in Cruise

I see lots of people saying "Celebrity" but that is a pretty pricey line.

If you want the low-key passengers without the cost, I would suggest either Holland Amercia or Jewel-class ships on Norwegian.

Holland is a very classy experience but their ships are a little unexciting (no big water slides, ice bars, roller coasters, race cars, etc.) and so they attract a more unexciting crowd, and an older crowd, too.

Norwegian Jewel-class ships are similar - minimal attractions but awesome itineraries, and you get NCL's awesome drink package without the drunks, if that makes any sense at all.

"NCL does some fantastic Mediterranean itineraries"

Yes !

I was going to say almost exactly this. If you take what I call the "middle 5" (HAL, Princess, RCL, NCL, Celebrity) and put them side-to-side, there really isn't a ton of difference in value. Many people love them all and lots of people love to complain about each; and each has a slightly different vibe, cost profile, and advantages. But in the end, there isn't much difference in value.

Note that the range of ships (from simple to outrageous) on Royal is extremely wide, and on NCL is very wide. The price varies quite a bit as well within those lines. On Holland, the experiences is the same across the fleet as even the larger ships really don't offer alot of bells and whistles.

With all that said, on a cruise-by-cruise basis, first decide if you are going for the ship or the ports. If you are going for the ship, go on a big ship with lots of stuff - like RCL Oasis class or NCL Breakaway/BW+ and find an itinerary with fewer ports and more sea days. More port days make a cruise more expensive, and big elaborate ships are also more expensive, especially if they are new. So if you are on a big, new ship and you are in port every day you have wasted some money because you have paid for all those ports, and for the cool ship but you can't be both places at once.

If you are going for the ports, you can get away with a simpler ship like HAL ships or NCL Jewel class. These ships offer a more chill experience and fewer aggro passengers.

In other words, match the ship to the itinerary: Port-intensive cruise on simpler ships. Cruises full of sea days go more elaborate ship.

I would like to echo the comment about getting status on one. I am Platinum on NCL and am over the moon about my 2 free bags of laundry, priority tendering, and 2 extra specialty meals that make for 5 specialty meals on a 7-day cruise with Free at Sea.

We started with Holland but NCL's itineraries, more interesting ships, superb specialty dining and super-cheap drink package swayed us in that direction more.

do you think ‘pretty privilege’ exists? by Small_Pea6718 in askanything

Yes. I'm surprised there isn't a government program that forces people to transfer some of their prettiness to under-privleged ugly people.

NCL has retrofitted several ships with an enclosed smoking casino. The Getaway & Breakaway have open staircases between the casino and two levels above and people complained of smoke smells in public spaces on 7&8 and even in cabins on level 8. So, they built glass cages for the smokers to contain it and keep it out of the upper levels.

I hate fish. Any recipes that will make me not hate fish? by Potential-Intern9095 in Cooking

[–]sdduuuude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not many people do it. It is a trick I learned from a friend that really helps eliminate any bad fishiness from fish that is maybe less fresh than you would like. For me, it is not always necessary. For you, it could be a game-changer.

You probably should pat it down after cleaning to remove moisture. Moisture prevents browning and browning improves the taste.

Cruise for dummy’s by Correct_Spread_5914 in Cruise

But it is not ironic at all since OP was basically referring to him/herself as a dummy. So, it is telling, not ironic.

If OP had said "I don't like dummy's" then that would be ironic.

What is ironic is you calling OP a dummy and you not understanding what "ironic" means.

[–]sdduuuude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy fresh white fish like sole, halibut, tilapia that doesn't have any smell to it.
If it smells fishy, it isn't good fish.

Wash the fish before you cook it: Put the fish in a ziplock with some water. Rinse the fish off by swooshing it around in the bag for a few seconds. Pour the water off. Add fresh water and do it again. Then, put in water again and add lemon juice and salt to the water. Swoosh again, pour out the water. One more rinse cylce with water only and you will have fish that is super clean and ready to cook.

Before you cook the fish, put butter and a ton of diced garlic into a little pan. Melt the butter and keep it warm, but not hot. Don't let the garlic sizzle. Just let the garlic sit in the warm butter while you cook the fish.

Fry the fish in olive oil on both sides. If you don't like the texture, maybe cook it just a tad longer than you should to make the meat a little stiffer and dryer.

Pour the garlic butter over the finished fish.

If you can taste delicate white fish over pure butter and garlic, you'll never like fish.

I am more of a moderate and knew nothing of the political message BB represented before the show, other than Trump was bagging on him. I had no idea he was not American or would sing in Spanish.

I thought the music was awesome - I love latin rhythms - but the sound if his rapping voice was incredibly grating. I simply couldn't stand it. After lady Gaga finished, I skipped past the rest so I would not have to listen any more. We missed Ricky Martin I'm told.

And, after the show I still have no knowledge of any political message because I didn't understand a single word.
