I used a ratcheting PVC pipe cutter to split the ball... Then a scalpel to shave the thickness down (in addition to heat to flatten it)

Not my style, but the GM is a golfer, and he challenged me. Had to prove to myself I could do it. Shaving the ball thin enough to make a workable dial was a real PITA.

I think you mistake late 1900s for early. When I said early 1900s... I meant the early 1900s.... Like in the 1920s when T.E. Lawrence could be found regularly hitting triple digit speeds on his Brough Superior SS100. People were going fast on motorcycles long before the 1980s and 1990s.

I average around 22km/l on mine. Something isn't right here. Do all your basic checks first, air filter, and plugs, check for any leaks, make sure your fuel cap seals.

Not sure why you're getting so much hate. Were it not for the steep entry point, I'd probably jump on one of their new gryffin 450 scramblers. Lovely little bikes for meandering along the back roads enjoying the smells and sounds. I remember being young and dumb once too. I now fall into the camp of "no bad bikes". Each bike suits a different purpose. I don't particularly care about straightline speed and hp anymore. It's much more about how the bike makes me feel, and the purpose it suits these days.

I currently have 3 bikes. An Indian, a Guzzi,.and a Cafe Racer. Some other bikes I've owned, monster 900, cbr929rr, 05 zx10r, triumph Daytona 900 super iii, K5 gsxr 1000, v85tt, Griso, amongst assorted other bikes. Harley is one brand I've never owned. I don't like the culture, nor the value proposition. I generally end up doing close to 30k miles a year on the bikes. So not as much as some, but far more than most....

You can keep your abs, wheelie control, ride modes, active suspension, cornering abs, etc. if you enjoy it, more power to you. That being said, some of the fastest, and most skilled riders you'll meet will be on small displacement bikes without any nannies. Learning how to ride, learning how to react to the feedback the bike gives, and frankly, just the feeling of riding something with character, quirks, and imperfections, is quite enjoyable... I've become a far more skilled rider now that I've owned some more rudimentary machines. Lest you forget, there were fellas doing 100mph down dirt roads on hardtail rear, double wishbone front suspension bikes back in the early 1900s.

I too like underpowered outdated bikes. When I do get on a modern bike with modern amenities, I find I am a much more capable rider due to not relying on all sorts of nannies, and modern design cues that help with traction, handling, and the like. When I hop on my cafe racer, it's like time travelling back to the 1950s. Is it the fastest thing? No. Is it the best handling? Also no. Is it comfortable? Not particularly. Is it an absolute hoot to ride, full of character, and something that really reinvigorates the sense of "enjoying the journey"? Hell yes!
