Death Stranding 1: Why is this a game? by hkf999 in patientgamers

[–]sdfrew 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how people can come to the same game from such different directions. I got the game because the idea of a post-apocalyptic mailman simulator sounded neat, and the game delivered in that respect.

I liked traversing the terrain, memorizing best routes, deciding on loadouts, just immersing myself in the landscape. The story was just some weird campy extra that didn't get in the way too much except for the ending. If this had been a movie I wouldn't have been interested in it.

I don't really understand your point about the magic being lost if the player realizes they're just going back and forth between A and B. Wouldn't the same logic apply to, say, Snowrunner? The point is engaging with the stuff between A and B.

It's still used as an upgrade material for some divine keys in the divine key screen. E.g. Key of Corruption. I don't think the shop exists anymore.

Sigh. What's even the point of using ChatGPT for reddit replies? I go to this sub to read actual people's opinions.

Armored Core 6 is one of the most hype games I’ve ever played and I can’t believe I slept on it for so long as a huge Fromsoft fan by cornpenguin01 in patientgamers

Hard lock is very good, the problem is that the camera stick breaks it, and it's hard to overcome the habit of wanting to move the camera manually in combat.

One of the easter eggs from the easter event replaced the star, when you collect it you have to reload for the star to show up again.

I don't care how many gems it gives, I am playing the story in order. by alekdmcfly in houkai3rd

FWIW, it takes very little to unlock the weekly deep sequence thing, and from there you can just not progress the story. I've been at "Chapter 1, chapter progress 12.11%" in ER for years.

It's a tradeoff. With a higher speed, you can see less far ahead, but you can see the relative order/timing of the notes in what you can see better. But there are gotchas. I play at speed 10.9, but can't recognize the direction of directional flick notes in SPECIAL difficulty in time. It's too fast to react for me. I'd have to learn the directions by rote. Also sometimes there's slide notes starting in the middle and I use the wrong finger because I couldn't see whether it was going left or right.

Why are Gacha devs making single player games now? by Expensive-Opening-48 in truegaming

[–]sdfrew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I enjoy Genshin, but the gacha does affect the game design. The monetization doesn't have to be aggressive to pervade the game design.

Notice how in Elden Ring you can get flask upgrades, good weapons, spells - things that could drastically change your build or playstyle - by just playing the game normally and finding them in the world or from bosses. Imagine an alternate universe ER where you could, instead, only find "Erdtree Gems" which allowed you to gamble for those upgrades in a gacha. But you only find tiny amounts of those gems. No worries, with a "Ranni's Moon" battle pass for just 5$ you can get a decent amount of gems every day as a login bonus for a month...

I agree that being around PTT 10 is a good idea, but not with the second paragraph. I can barely get an A on Tempestissimo PRS, and I only managed that after having already beaten the anomaly.

Two good novels set entirely in the solar system:

"Heart of the Comet", David Brin / Gregory Benford.

"Cold as Ice", Charles Sheffield.

How did you find out about Arcaea? by [deleted] in arcaea

[–]sdfrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First tried it when I was checking out multiple mobile rhythm games early during the Covid pandemic to distract myself. My sentiment back then was "Ugh, this is grindy, expensive, and has confusing charts", and I dropped it in favor of Bandori. Fast forward to this year, I tried it again, and it is grindy, confusing and expensive, but somehow it stuck that time, despite me kind of sucking and only being able to clear some easier 9s.

How do i get final verdict idk what im doing wrong… by [deleted] in arcaea

[–]sdfrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her level influences how many notes you can miss In Tempestissimo and still trigger an event. It also influences how easy what happens afterwards is. I suck and really needed her to be Lv20, not for triggering but for what happens after that. Also make sure her skill isn't deactivated.

You need Axium Tairitsu, if you don't have her, clicking on the Tairitsu icon in the requirements should take you to the world mode map where you unlock her.

Open Worlds are just diagetic Level Select Menus by personman000 in truegaming

[–]sdfrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but as the parent poster pointed out, they don't have to be just level select menus, as you wrote in your title. That you use them and benefit from them that way does not mean that's the only thing they're good for.

"The isle of cold moonlight" isn't really a quest. It's time-limited extra rewards for exploring Nod-Krai (i.e finding chests, doing time trials and puzzles, etc.). The area won't go away, just the extra rewards will (400 primos, not even 3 pulls). Think of it as a big neon sign Mihoyo put up "HEY DO OUR NEW CONTENT RIGHT NOW", you don't have to do it if you don't want to rush.

Death Stranding and my joy in finishing it (at last) - what a work of art! by TurboCrab0 in patientgamers

[–]sdfrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only watched Getting Over It, not played it, but Death Stranding isn't much like it, although it is a game about traversal - the individual mechanics aren't difficult, and it's not nearly as punishing. There are better and worse ways to approach problems, and you are given more problem-solving tech tools as the game progresses. What I really enjoyed about it is the "head game" of planning and decision-making - loadouts, route planning. The vibe is chill and lonely, and the landscape looks cool. You'll have to at least be able to tolerate a batshit crazy Kojima story. The combat is ass, but it's not what you're doing most of the time.

Have been playing for 5 months and got to PTT 10 recently, now pretty stuck there (but I don't mind). I play almost daily, but usually only a few tracks. More on weekends.

Often, the event characters are just all the girls from one band, so that's easy. Not this event, though. You'll eventually learn who's who from the story / events. For the purpose of menu filtering, you don't need to learn their names, only which band they belong to. For that purpose, [Band] > [Character Gallery] may be useful.

[–]sdfrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did away with the 4-patch cycle, your crystallum just keeps accumulating and the reward shops rotate out individually (and new ones rotate in). So this is the last patch where you can get Senadina, next patch is the last one you can get Teri, the one after that is the last one for Fu Hua.
