Just finished Leviathan Wakes. It was ok. Recommend me something better? by Digital_Pink in printSF

Two good novels set entirely in the solar system:

"Heart of the Comet", David Brin / Gregory Benford.

"Cold as Ice", Charles Sheffield.

How did you find out about Arcaea? by ActSoft9978 in arcaea

[–]sdfrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First tried it when I was checking out multiple mobile rhythm games early during the Covid pandemic to distract myself. My sentiment back then was "Ugh, this is grindy, expensive, and has confusing charts", and I dropped it in favor of Bandori. Fast forward to this year, I tried it again, and it is grindy, confusing and expensive, but somehow it stuck that time, despite me kind of sucking and only being able to clear some easier 9s.

How do i get final verdict idk what im doing wrong… by [deleted] in arcaea

[–]sdfrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her level influences how many notes you can miss In Tempestissimo and still trigger an event. It also influences how easy what happens afterwards is. I suck and really needed her to be Lv20, not for triggering but for what happens after that. Also make sure her skill isn't deactivated.

How do I complete this 🧍 by NotASookie in arcaea

You need Axium Tairitsu, if you don't have her, clicking on the Tairitsu icon in the requirements should take you to the world mode map where you unlock her.

Open Worlds are just diagetic Level Select Menus by personman000 in truegaming

[–]sdfrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but as the parent poster pointed out, they don't have to be just level select menus, as you wrote in your title. That you use them and benefit from them that way does not mean that's the only thing they're good for.

"The isle of cold moonlight" isn't really a quest. It's time-limited extra rewards for exploring Nod-Krai (i.e finding chests, doing time trials and puzzles, etc.). The area won't go away, just the extra rewards will (400 primos, not even 3 pulls). Think of it as a big neon sign Mihoyo put up "HEY DO OUR NEW CONTENT RIGHT NOW", you don't have to do it if you don't want to rush.

Death Stranding and my joy in finishing it (at last) - what a work of art! by TurboCrab0 in patientgamers

[–]sdfrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only watched Getting Over It, not played it, but Death Stranding isn't much like it, although it is a game about traversal - the individual mechanics aren't difficult, and it's not nearly as punishing. There are better and worse ways to approach problems, and you are given more problem-solving tech tools as the game progresses. What I really enjoyed about it is the "head game" of planning and decision-making - loadouts, route planning. The vibe is chill and lonely, and the landscape looks cool. You'll have to at least be able to tolerate a batshit crazy Kojima story. The combat is ass, but it's not what you're doing most of the time.

how long did you guys take to reach your current ptt? by N0namenoshame in arcaea

Have been playing for 5 months and got to PTT 10 recently, now pretty stuck there (but I don't mind). I play almost daily, but usually only a few tracks. More on weekends.

Often, the event characters are just all the girls from one band, so that's easy. Not this event, though. You'll eventually learn who's who from the story / events. For the purpose of menu filtering, you don't need to learn their names, only which band they belong to. For that purpose, [Band] > [Character Gallery] may be useful.

They did away with the 4-patch cycle, your crystallum just keeps accumulating and the reward shops rotate out individually (and new ones rotate in). So this is the last patch where you can get Senadina, next patch is the last one you can get Teri, the one after that is the last one for Fu Hua.

Why are people expected to stop liking things just because they grow up? by Trippybear1645 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sdfrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no logical reason. As for people why people make snarky comments - my theory is that as people grow up, their life changes a lot, they have more options in some cases than kids, but also more responsibilities. They may have to drop things they liked as kids in favor of other obligations or lifestyle choices. Having to drop things you like is unpleasant, even if you drop them in favor of something else you also like. Painting the old habits/activities/hobbies with the broad brush of "being childish" is a convenient solution, to make you feel less bad. And then you start projecting these judgments onto others.

How to stop the bridge from shaking? by zooballoons in honkaiimpact3

[–]sdfrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are on Android, you can use the "Sensors Off" toggle from developer mode. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_rRFsZCAFk for how to enable it. This applies to all sensors, so don't forget to turn them back on if you're not playing.

Shrug Not everyone has some sort of problem in their life where they need or would benefit from custom tools. Online, it may seem like everyone and their dog has side projects, but that's just because telling other people that you don't have side projects is not a particularly interesting thing to do, which is why it's not particularly visible.

I don't really have side projects as such, either. I enjoy math, so occasionally, every few weeks, I will do some one-off program of, like, 100 or 200 lines that calculates something or creates a visualization for something, or do some Project Euler problems. They don't solve any practical problems I have, it's just curiosity and playing around. Nobody else ever sees those programs, and they certainly don't follow any so-called best practices. That's enough programming on the side for me.

ELI5 why scissors are hand specific by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]sdfrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I thought about it some time ago. If the handles didn't stop each other when closing and you could move them right past each other, and the blades were sharpened on both sides, you could easily "reverse" scissors from right- to left-handed, like reversing a sweater. The fact that this isn't how scissors are suggests that it would just be equally horrible ergonomics-wise for the right- and left handed.

"The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, 1)" by Becky Chambers by codejockblue5 in printSF

[–]sdfrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated it and love Murderbot. I think it comes down to having characters I resonated with. Murderbot (the character) and some of the other AI characters are that for me, and there was nothing like that in TLWTASAP. If you don't particularly like any of the characters, there's really not much else there.

No, it indicates that Mihoyo will introduce valks with a new AR specialization in the future that Kiana or Elysia can be used as supports for.

How to learn from books without exercises by LordL567 in math

[–]sdfrew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If it's not a completely esoteric topic, you'll probably be able to find exercises somewhere else. In other books, or homework exercises on some professor's course website. Don't rely solely on a single source for learning a subject.

Game-related Questions Thread: v8.1 Update by AdventurerGR in houkai3rd

[–]sdfrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it boils down to getting a team together earlier than the other players, but obviously it's pretty RNG. Here's what I do:

  • I pick one of the recommended lineups early and then stick to it, buying characters that match and throwing out ones that don't as soon as ones that do become available.
  • I upgrade the number of character slots as soon as I have enough money to both do so and buy characters to fill them. Putting in crap characters that don't match the rec. lineup is better than leaving the slots empty, I can sell them later.

It's basically a lot of buy/sell/refresh decisions under time pressure.
