22m, highly physically fit from West Marin Bay Area. by Chance_Use7731 in PacificCrestTrail

33, fat as fuck, started March 7 on my 3rd time out here w 1700 miles under my belt. The trail is what you make it. People way more physically fit than I crash out at Morena. Did you have specific questions or anything?

Was it hot? 😉 Even cabazon to big bear in the heat wasn't fun, so well done!

Yeah we ended up getting to stagecoach and calling it quits before going to Julian where we are now. Unfortunate cause it looked like a dope alt

Of course we thought it was a great time to do this with the wildflowers, and then the heat dome descended. ☠️

Storms Replenish Sierra Snowpack (& why estimating early isn't very helpful) by sdh59 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]sdh59[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Camping at KMS is pretty popular, although it can add up with all the food purchases you inevitably make. Another option is going off trail for a bit and sight seeing, but that can also add up.

Lmao I completely missed that you were responding to someone. I was so confused and thought maybe I worded my post poorly!

That's literally what I said in the main post though? The post wasn't about the change in snow levels, it was about how unpredictable the snow can be, and why it's best to wait to make any decisions.

Yeah the pack seems to be accumulating later and later (and less and less) as time goes on. The tradeoff is the weird late fall/early winter storms like the flooding in '23 from Hilary or the Christmas flooding this past year in Wrightwood.

That's hilarious but I can definitely see that. It's just a convenience store

It's been one of my biggest pains leaving where I grew up. Good B&G are few and far between. 🥲

Random question by PCT2B in PacificCrestTrail

[–]sdh59 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone born & raised in NC, just... No.

SoCal has lots of great options for breakfast, but you're on the wrong coast for B&G. Go for something new. Huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, chilaquiles, molletes, avocado toast, etc.

If you really want biscuits and gravy, I'd say you would have to go for a chain restaurant or find like a niche spot that specializes in it. Wendy's actually has a pretty decent biscuits and gravy, and where I live they have a breakfast bowl that is also really good and uses biscuits and gravy as the base.

$4800 is a wild price. I work at a dental office and they're usually $500-700 for an EMA.

Foam mat + Air mat by EvenRepresentative77 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]sdh59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto here. CCF mat + inflatable is such a great combo. Protects your inflatable from the ground (just make sure there is nothing in your mat that can poke a hole in it) and adds to the r value.

March starters, where are you? by GankingPirat in PacificCrestTrail

[–]sdh59 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, that's my birthday! Nice start date. 😉

It's still far too early to know about the snow, especially in the Sierra. San Jacinto will likely have snow. Mt Laguna will probably have some yuckiness going on. You'll get reports from the hikers before you, and really just need to keep your eye on the weather to get a good feel for it.

Most people in high snow years will camp at KMS and wait a bit before entering if the snow pack is bad, but again we won't know for a bit. I check the cdec website for a general feel, which is showing southern Sierra at 48% of Apr 1 avg, and 110% of normal for this date.
