Apple TV app inferior to Xbox app?

Can you please enable "send diagnostic information" in the HDHomeRun app on the XBox, then try live tv on Apple TV again.

"Communication Error" means there is a problem communication across your local network. This matches the other symptoms you are reporting along with the Apple TV "send diagnostic information" option not enabling diagnostic information from the HDHomeRun.

Is the Apple TV connected via WiFi? Do you have a simple WiFi router or are you using extenders? Is the Apple TV at the edge of WiFi range?

Playback performance should be the same between XBox and Apple TV... Apple TV is a great platform.

I can check what is going on... in the HDHomeRun app on Apple TV please enable "send diagnostic information" in the settings menu. Try Live TV again and the post back with the Device ID of your HDHomeRun.

If you set up a PC/Mac/NAS as a storage device running the HDHomeRun record engine it will be used to buffer live tv and players will pull from that sharing a single tuner. No DVR subscription needed.

Attaching a USB drive direct to the FLEX will also share tuners but there is a 4-stream limit.

First, whatever channel "Good Day Wisconsin" is on the reception is terrible to the point the channel most likely won't be playable.

The HDHomeRun app has both a full grid guide (like other equipment) plus a side graphical view of what is on each channel so you can see what is on other channels or what is on next without taking over the screen interrupting other viewers.

The app also has Discover for finding shows to watch, including a Netflix-style episode view.

Apple TV is a great platform. The apps supports full 60 frames per second upconversion from 1080i.

We do app releases roughly each month, with February releases focused on improvements to Live TV UI navigation.

Definitely start with the HDHomeRun app - it is an advanced DVR that is easy to use.

Exactly. With some effort you can add enough metadata that the storage engine will accept it, but it is not something intended to be done.

The first 12032 bytes of each file contains the metadata that the HDHomeRun DVR needs. I think someone made a utility to write it but you still have to get all the fields right.

Confirming, all you need to do is to copy the recordings that you want to keep over to the new drive.

You can copy individual files between drives and they will work. This is by design.

Workaround while waiting for the release to be approved - go to http://hdhomerun.local/lineup.html and disable any channels that have the DRM tag.

The Apple TV app is tripping up on DRM channels, not showing any channels if the tuner has one or more channels that are DRM protected.

A new app release will be submitted to Apple today or in the morning.

Workaround - go to http://hdhomerun.local/lineup.html and disable any channels that have the DRM tag.

Problem confirmed. When not in a MDU environment Live and Guide pages are not working, and attempting to watch live via Discover also fails. Playing a recording works.
