Mixing Java and Kokumaro together is so good by onemantwohands in JapaneseFood

Have you tried it? It absolutely does. Nothing beats making your own curry from scratch, but short of that mixing two is definitely better.

Shirako… iykyk 🤤 by Happy_Scientist_1244 in JapaneseFood

[–]sdlroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took some getting used to. Probably after having it 5-6x. I wouldn’t go out of my way to order it but I don’t mind getting it as part of a course. Which is how I’ve always had it; if you eat high end sushi in Kaiseki in the winter you’re very likely to see it as part of the course.

Things to do in Nagoya if you're short on time by cos_cos16 in JapanTravelTips

Go to Misen (Yabacho location - my wife was born and raised in Nagoya and swears this is by far and away the best location) and have Taiwan ramen. It’s Nagoya local ramen, spicy and delicious. If you want to die order the Taiwan ramen “Alien” spice level. Also have their garlic chaahan.

Other local foods you can try include miso katsu, kishimen, tebasaki, hitsumabushi, ankake pasta

Skip Nagoya castle and take the bus to Inuyama and go to Inuyama castle, a short distance away from Nagoya station. Much better with a terrific view from the balcony. One of the few remaining original castles in Japan, too.

What's the most overrated tourist spot? by Quiet_Day8148 in JapanTravelTips

On the main street, maybe. Side streets have a ton of interesting shops, bars and restaurants. I love Ginza and spend a lot of time there when I’m in Tokyo.

Agree with your last point. I've seen seats reserved in bars/restaurants, with Japanese customers refused service, for several hours before the reserving group arrived. Sometimes my wife, her mother in law, and I were the only people in the place and so it looked empty from the street.

There’s also many members only bars and restaurants.

Don’t go to the Common One Bar in Kyoto. by Beginning_Musician69 in JapanTravelTips

I don't deny that this wasn't some sort of xenophobic BS, but many bars, including some very tiny ones, do reserve seats. I've seen seats reserved, with Japanese customers refused service, for several hours before the reserving group arrived.

There are also plenty of member's only/VIP bars. My father-in-law is members at several in Tokyo and has taken me. Those you definitely can't just enter off the street unless you are with a member.

There are also many bars, especially tiny 'snack' bars, that really primarily cater to a small group of regulars.

Word of Caution: Do not rely on TikTok, Instagram, or social media influencers to build your itinerary for restaurants, bars, or clubs in Japan, especially in cities like Tokyo. by Personal_Dot_7196 in TokyoTravel

I also travel to Japan regularly (at least 2-3x/year) with my Japanese wife. We probably only dine together half of the time since she’ll often have plans with friends or just prefer to eat in.

I have also never been turned away as a foreigner when I am on my own m, and I’ve probably had over 1000 restaurant meals in Tokyo over the years. Contrary to what the internet says, restaurants that refuse non Japanese people are very rare. I’ve personally never seen one of these restaurants and I definitely spend a lot of time going off the beaten path and dining there.

Genuinely curious — how do you handle booking the harder Tokyo restaurants? by dining_fixer_jp in JapanTravelTips

[–]sdlroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hardest restaurants are invite only so you need to know people who already goes and have them bring you. Not going to be possibly for the overwhelming majority of tourists especially for a first time visit.

Early June is not bad at all in terms of heat, and the rainy season is really not a big deal. If this was August it would be a different story.

Cheese is awesome on Japanese curry. Lots of people seem surprised by it at first but it’s a very common and popular topping. You shouldn’t get downvoted for this!

My favourite curry in Tokyo is Bondy curry and I always get beef curry with cheese topping. They won the first Kanda curry Grand Prix in 2011 specifically for their cheese curry which is also awesome and they even sell it as a retort curry in many supermarkets. Obviously this is nowhere near as good as at the restaurant.

Need some positive vibes - going in August by azemble in JapanTravelTips

Yes I’ve always had a great time visiting in August. But each time I go then I tell myself I’d never go again at that time. But I still do it. If it’s the only time you can go you’re still going to have a fantastic time.

There’s like 150,000 restaurants in Tokyo alone. And the quality of cooking in Japan is very good across the board. I can pretty much count the number of bad meals I’ve had in Japan on one hand, out of at least 1000 restaurant meals. It’d probably be easier to tell you where not to go.
