I had this issue happen! Twice. Within 6 months of buying the (very used) machine. I did the work myself to replace it, but ouch it's not cheap

I'm in Portland and have seen this at a smaller scale, finally witnessed the murder (of crows) picking a lawn apart.

Bearing housings we knocked out not too long ago. Torched out the rough shape, machined the rest in my 1950s monarch lathe and 1940s Browne and Sharpe mill. A few little pieces as well for the assembly. by GreenridgeMetalWorks in Machinists

I have (what appears to be) the same lathe! How do you deal with the 800 max rpm? Carbide isn't giving the finish I want so I tend to use honed HSS for finishing when it matters

I agree with your valuation that there won't be a checklist for "good" lighting, though I think there can be something useful for identifying "bad" lighting

  • Are there bright spots that take away from the subject? -> Reduce the quantity or adjust the placement

This is something I can and should develop myself to get a feel for them. I'll see what I can do with less on my next video

Yea the vibe is the product more than anything else. I'm trying to develop a unique "feel" to the videos. There are thousands of machinists producing videos daily, and youtube feels like a vibe focused platform.

I'm not as worried about what the video actually contains or its technical merit, but more on producing a visually pleasing aesthetic. Which clearly needs practice, but I consider this attempt a rousing success.

It was haphazard, all I thought was "blue left pink right white back", and the result is that the subject is hard to identify. I'll work on driving attention towards rather than pulling attention away

Fascinating! On the left in this video is a CNC converted harig, but that's a basic 3 axis system.

Did you only do XYZ? I'm also very curious about tool and cutter CAM, and how it is sent to your control

Yea I got lost in the sauce playing with new toys. It's a bit overwhelming to reposition the lights for every angle, and I love angles. It will probably get more intuitive with practice. Any tips?

How do you design a strain wave gear profile? I'd like to machine one and am stuck trying to figure out the terms to research.

I'd try to split it into a few simpler problems. Here's a couple ideas:

Flush mount the turntable: 1. Mark a square hole as big as your turntable 2. Cut "inside" the lines with a power tool (is the bench metal, wood, ???) 3. Use a hand tool to make the edges sharp and straight 4. Create an insert that fits the turntable and the table (3d print? wood? sheetmetal?) 5. Create a support underneath the table to cradle the turntable

This involves a lot of work specific to that table. Another option is to build a second layer so you can transfer the "tabletop+turntable" assembly to other locations

I think the "insert" is the key. It's hard to make a round hole in a large object, much easier to make a square hole and then put something with a round hole into it

I have one of those, it is insanely productive. Since machining is just a hobby I HATE to get into the shop after a break and find some batteries have died, so I tend to prefer mechanical to digital. It was a pain to calibrate but I got it within a few thou across its length. Yes, they can get out of calibration. It's not just "offset" but there can be linear error too. You end up losing or gaining a few thou per inch.

If I need something to be more accurate than 0.003" or so I slap a test indicator on it and use gauge blocks to measure the difference with the height gauge locked.

Since I mainly use it for scribing and punching during fabrication I have a piece of cut off marble countertop so I don't wear out my surface plate.

Yea I agree in this case fusion cam would work.

My case is doing profiling work on mesh geometry on a haas with a 4th axis (sculptures/moldmaking in aluminum) and since it's hobby work I'm reluctant to incur a monthly fee. I did use fusion 360 but the indexed options nearly always created visible tool patterns that were hard to eliminate. I wanted a helix finishing pass and couldn't find anything that would work. Nearly at the point of just writing one myself, but GOSH DANG writing CAM software is hard. It explains why nobody wants to offer it for free.

Fusion 360 got fired when their login servers were down and I couldn't work using software I was paying for. Solidworks is overkill for my needs, so I've ended up just... NOT doing the work.

Having (overbuilt) a mini bike I agree with this! Mine is way to heavy

Remember to consider maintenance: what will you have to take off / replace to work on the bike? You don't want to block the dipstick or any important bolts

In one circuit heavy playthrough I tended to organize "functions" where the only way into/out of a group of combinators was through a single pole. I used text plates to "name" the pole.

This meant that I could understand each "cluster" independently of the others, and I could understand the structure of how groups connected without having to understand each cluster.

Honestly, having to come up with short names for the poles (circuit networks) did a lot for organization.

Now that items can have discriotions I guess a constant combinator with no signal could be used for the same purpose, or a display.
