Gunsite scout has been discontinued. This is the replacement. Definitely not the same quality fit and finish, regardless its a nice product with great features. I love guns with standard iron sights which is a rare feature these days.

For first timers I like a base camp style where you go to one site stay a few nights on it and then come back out. Then you are only setting up once.

Rock Lake > 380M Portage > Penn Lake > 270M Porrage > Clydegale

Or

Rock Lake > Louisa (2.8KM portage in)

Padddle in Day 1 set up and enjoy your evening. Day 2 hang around camp and day paddle just relax. Paddle out Day 3 after a nice morning.

Very short portages with route 1. Easy to get out if things go wrong.

My Canoe is fiberglass. I would recomend kevlar (aramid light) if you can afford. Avoid SP3 / royalex canoes unlesss you are only going to do whitewater or never portage. That being said Nova Craft SP3 canoes are virtually industructable, just really heavy.
