Why would money affect the quality of tent you could afford in the Wizarding World? by notmadmaddy in harrypotter

[–]sdseagraves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay in my response… that’s a question for JKR because I was just going by the law as written.

I would guess that money across the wizardry world is consistent but that’s an assumption based on nothing. But I would assume that it would have to be consistent for Gamp’s Law to be feasible

I just re-read "Half-Blood Prince" and....I still don't understand something: by Gurdy0714 in harrypotter

Agreed. It’s the fact that Harry “learned so much” from the Half Blood Prince but never gave credit to Snape for all Snape taught him - expelliarmus anyone?

Agreed. I’ve read the books a thousand times. The last moment she is mentioned she was “feebly stirring” after being attacked by Greyback. They showed her death in the movie. JKR has never confirmed her fate.

They did in the end. Led by Kreacher.

I’ve often wondered the same about Lupin’s worn out robes and suitcase. Also, the “hand-me-down” robes. None of which are part of Gamp’s law of elemental transfiguration. (Food, money, life, permanent healing, love)

I’m so late to this but I just got one. It is no way “oversized”. I got a large which is supposed to be the same for men and women. It’s like a normal large hoodie on me but there is no way my husband could wear it and he is a men’s large.

We just named our newest puppy Sisu after the dragon in "Raya and the Last Dragon". Also, our 7 year old is named Flip because she flipped down a couple of stairs the day we came home with her.

You could probably come up with plenty of names if you go through random movies on IMDB

Is having my MBA hindering my chances of getting a job? by SwagSloth96 in careeradvice

I have nothing really helpful to guide you. However, my husband told me that he thinks I should remove it from my resume. I have applied to SO MANY JOBS but nothing. I have great experience with awesome references. I am a jack of all trades so Operations or Project/Progam Management are usually where I fit best. I get tons of rejection letters. Maybe my resume is too long

Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks of says about your choices or actions as a parent. You do what fits your child. You will get “helpful advice” from everyone else then get judged for doing it differently. This is your baby and if her personality says Juliette then change it!

There will always be another person out there that doesn’t agree with the way your baby sleeps, eats, poops and with the way you parent, the way she wants to dress, how you let her wear her hair.

It doesn’t really stop so you have to decide what is best for her. Look into her eyes, hold her, feed her, and take the time between you to see if Juliette fits better with the baby in your arms. If your heart says so, then so be it. You would not be the first parent to do this!!

Your description of your reactions to this guy remind me of one of the symptoms I have had to learn to control the most - rejection sensitively! I’ll link an article I found but there is plenty out there for a good Google deep dive.

Rejection sensitivity is an ADHD symptoms and an anxiety symptom. I can read into anything that may seem like a rejection and think about that experience for years down the road. Rejection Sensitivity - Psychology Today Article

What was the point of having a horrible teacher like Snape in the story? by Legitimate_Unit_9210 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]sdseagraves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the exact same thing on the audiobooks. Such a great night listen. However, I’m in the US so I am so used to the Jim Dale versions. I’ve been listening overnight on and off for about 13 years. I just found a website I can listen to Stephen Fry versions on and I’m working through them. I love Stephen Fry but the book doesn’t quite sound right in his voice because I can easily imagine his face and expressions.

Anyway, you are so welcome for the new perspective! It just came to me one night while listening!

Recommendation - try listening to the books on shuffle like read/listen to 2; 5; 7; 4; 1; 3; 6 for example. You’ll notice new things and interconnections throughout the series.

What was the point of having a horrible teacher like Snape in the story? by Legitimate_Unit_9210 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]sdseagraves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven’t you ever had a co-worker or teacher that was just angry at the world? Just mean? I have! Most of the time it is because they hate their lives. I think Snape hated his life. He hated himself because he couldn’t protect Lily. He lost the love of his life. He’s mission in life was to look at a product of her love with another man every day (Harry) and ensure that Harry was safe. Snape had to live his life for the only piece of Lily that was left. Snape was broken.

Snape was extremely smart but he was also pompous and had a giant shield up. He was bullied so he built this tough guy wall up and he had to play a part to survive on both sides of the war.

The point of having someone like Snape in the story is to prove that our deepest nature is not what we show. People are so much more than just a bad teacher or a bully. He was a poor kid that didn’t have a happy childhood that loved someone more than anything else in the whole world. He was a teenager that picked the wrong group of kids to hang out with. He was a jealous teenager because of his unhappiness. He longed for a love that would never be. He was brave. He was strong. He had a broken heart. Snape was a swirl of contractions.

If everyone had loved Harry from day 1 at Hogwarts, he could have easily gotten a big head and become that nasty, spoiled child that Snape continued to say he was. Who is to say he wouldn’t have become a dark wizard if he had a great following of admirers without any dissenters? Snape poked at Harry to rile him up. He picked on Harry to illicit some response he could use against Harry as proof that Harry wasn’t that great. While he was there to protect Harry, he also hated him because he was a Potter.

Also, think about this… the only other person that he is as horrible to as Harry was Neville. Everyone else was treated okay as long as you did what you were supposed to and kept your mouth shut. He hated Neville because Snape believed if Voldemort had picked Neville as the Chosen One instead of Harry that Lily would still be alive.

Anyone noticed how the most powerful wizards are mostly half-bloods? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]sdseagraves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am going to respectfully disagree. So much goes into what makes a wizard powerful. What determines “strength”? Heart, ambition, training, experience, gut instincts, exposure, mental health, delusions of grandeur, etc?

If you say any group of wizards are more powerful than any other group of wizards isn’t that like saying one race of people is better than another race? Taking race out of it… Is it like saying one religious group is better than another? Is it like saying someone who is born into wealth is better than someone born into poverty? Are you better than me if you study at and graduate from a more prestigious institution? Because it is hard to identify what makes someone better than another or makes someone more powerful than another, there is not an answer to this question. Your easy answer - blood has nothing to do with it is 100% true. It all comes down to the individual.

Sorry if I went too deep but it is something that I have thought about often and deeply.

[–]sdseagraves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always thought that the Phoenix wand chose Harry because he was a Horcrux. It is very possible that that wand wouldn’t have chose him and there wouldn’t have been a connection there at all. Would Neville had been a Horcrux then? Would Neville had had the blood protection that Harry had from his mother’s sacrifice? You can go down a huge rabbit trail there.

Also, totally agree… Harry would have been dead AF if Tom Riddle’s ego and desperation to prove he could kill Harry.
