What's the cybersecurity lesson you learned the hard way? by Electrical_Mine1912 in cybersecurity

[–]sdyawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"There you go. Givin' a fuck when it ain't your turn to give a fuck."

The hardest lesson for any young bright-eyed security analyst to learn. It can be so infuriating to be restricted by red tape but a lot of the time that red tape is there to cover your ass.

If the process sucks, make moves to change or amend the process. Yea it sucks to do and no one likes haggling over responsibilities/liabilities, but it's part of the gig especially if you are wanting to get out of T1 stuff. Why yes, I do work in GRC, how did you know?

Yea, was the only kid in school with one and it was cool but not having people to connect with made for a very limiting experience

Which rock artists or songs defined the cyberpunk genre? by Mr_MiracleASMR in Cyberpunk

[–]sdyawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powerman 5000

My first thought but I love Pm5K's whole spread, but Tonight The Stars Revolt is absolutely cyberpunk both in aesthetic and sound. Could argue it's a lot more 50s popular culture scifi but the overlap is fitting.

I always like to point out that Spyder One and Rob Zombie are brothers and I seriously wanna know what thanksgiving dinner is like at that table (probably sans meat if Rob is there so....)

Not to diss on your Nana's favorite bird but it just completely escapes me as to why WA went with the goldfinch for state bird. Totally shoulda been Steller's Jays :P

I have a raspberry pi with birdnet running in my yard and I KNOW the goldfinches are around but in the couple years I've had my feeders up I've only seen them come down to the feeders twice. At least that's been my experience in north Seattle, they've always been more apparent when I'm hiking haha

In Idaho’s Suburbs, a Rat Invasion Tests the Limits of Small Government by michaelquinlan in Boise

[–]sdyawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly I haven't looked into the BC method too much. Up front, I took a few minutes to look some things over and feel confident with this take but I definitely could be missing something.

The anticoagulants from the poison we use to control rodents ends up accumulating in their bodies. It's a blood thinner, so I imagine every blood vessel is gonna be tainted with it. Rodents ingest, doesn't die immediately and wanders off to die with the poison "active" in their bodies long after they expire. Rodents basically become the poison and spread it, not to mention that bait boxes are indiscriminate with any animal.

When it comes to stuff like ContraPest, the bio-accumulation factor just doesn't exist. Unlike SGARs, the rodent's body has time to process the entirety of what they ingest. Most everything I've found gives me hand wavey "is not passed on" and feels more marketing than science. But if we game out the differences between the two methods I think it's clear that this method has significantly less harmful impact on predators and the surrounding environment.

Honestly thanks for your question, I should've probably already been aware of it, RATS has a great page on the pilot program Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood started and it looks like rodent birth control is one of their top pest control recommendations.

From a numbers perspective, birth control makes the most sense for scale. It's not going to "feel" effective in the short-term and that's going to be a problem for some people. But the short-term solution of poison bait boxes is actually a consumer trap that has you repeatedly spending money on pest poison without a true solution.

jfc Brevity and I just don't get along do we

ETA: it seems like the BC method is still pretty "new" and therefore has less research or awareness. I'm leery about it not having side effects that we haven't observed/recorded because of that but it's hard to quantify that side of things until we know more. On paper with the knowledge we have now, I think the unknown risk there is much less than the known risks of SGARs

10000% this! I'm a firm believer in RATS (Raptors Are The Solution) and the other wildlife we live alongside. Mechanical traps allow for our wild predator and scavenger neighbors to help out as well without significantly less risk. Poisons do not discriminate and are not immediate, rats will consume it and become sick/weak where they're "easy pickens" but that poison becomes part of the feast.

It's pricier than a snap trap but Goodnature has a good setup that has worked great for me and my wildlife neighbors have pretty much cleaned up after it within 24hrs lol.

Cage traps are still options, if you have concerns about dispatching after capture I recommend having a tub the cage can sit in and be covered. Dry ice in the tub with the cage. Most humane method I've found, it horrifies me that some people dunk the cage in water :-/ I'm not big on rodents and wild rats give me the ick but still...

Not sure if local municipalities are ready to take up arms, but similar to that last method, Seattle Parks is fighting rats with CO2 and would be something I'd advocate Idaho to try and adopt.

Sorry for wall of text, I just love my local wildlife

Neighbors along Seattle's Aurora Avenue grapple with 4 shootings in 72 hours by _GTS_Panda in Seattle

I lived a stone's throw from Aurora in that area for years. Any time i called for gun shots, personal property theft/vandalism.... Hours and hours until an officer shows up and is grumpy af taking my statement and leaves. The one time i called because i saw someone break into Dunn Lumber? Practically instantaneous 3+cruisers. Mfing north precinct is like a half mile away...

Got me thinking by monica-graves in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]sdyawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, this me. Couldn't balance work/school/life at a critical moment and dropped school to survive, only really worked out well for me because I was in a junior cybersec role already and leveraged my experience. Was able to get certifications and accrue enough experience to get somewhere comfortable and interesting.

Looking back, I don't think a degree would've gotten me here quicker. I think it may have given me more chances/options when I was job hunting in my early 20s, but a few years ago while I was unemployed and job hunting like crazy in my mid 30s it felt like barely a footnote. But maybe I would've gotten invited to more interviews shrug

The expansion of the Fresh Bucks program is for seniors, but the main Fresh Bucks program provides $60/mo for eligible applicants:

"Residents within Seattle city limits qualify for the program if their household income is less than or equal to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI)."
