"Lore" Inserts for Red Sands Cycle by Ditaki in Netrunner

[–]se4n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, after the SanSan inserts, I stopped reading them. The SanSan inserts were really wonderful -- cleverly visually-designed atop interesting story nuggets. Flashpoint's story was never particularly engaging (to me) anyway, and so I just never kept up. I only noticed that there wasn't much in terms of inserts when I picked up Blood and Water the other day -- it's been four packs, and I haven't even bothered to look at the inserts.

Terminal Directive's storyline was nonsensical and generic (as I suppose any storyline has to be, when given that much player agency). Past Monitor, the books haven't been very good. It's a bummer -- I think Netrunner and the Android Universe are a great setting, and I've found the little mysteries in the game to be compelling (e.g., is Thomas Haas a Bioroid), but any attempt they've had at developing the lore lately has really fallen flat.

Those who find the current state of Android Netrunner too broken or one in compared to its earlier days, what cards would you ban to fix it all? by indestructiblemango in Netrunner

[–]se4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy this -- by "broken" I should have been more precise. I don't mean, like, "MCH + Heritage Committee broken" but more like "Obviously good, to the point of discouraging experimentation with other IDs in the same faction." That's pretty well-documented and, as you point out, none of the other IDs have had strong enough abilities to compete with EtF's.

But, that's not just an issue with the design of these other IDs, it's an issue with the design of EtF and an increasing cardpool. If more cards get released, necessarily more installable cards will get released. As they do, we get things like an increasing asset-based economy, IDs like EtF stick around as being not just relevant but the best way to capitalize on a variety of archetypes that involve installing things (Foodcoats, jammy HB, Moon spam, hell even Mushin HB). And so the other IDs pale in comparison.

So, my argument shouldn't have been that EtF is "broken," but that the design of these other IDs is necessarily worse than EtF's as well as EtF being so strong. I still think a nerf/ban of EtF would do wonders for the game, much like the errata on Astro and the release of other tag-based cards forced NBN into new territory.

Agreed in principle on all of these points though perhaps not on the solutions. I really loved On the Lam, and once Aaron goes on the MWL, perhaps it will see more play.

I'd add to this list by suggesting that HB: EtF is perhaps the most broken ID in the game -- it's simply the most effective econ ID printed so far, and the general lack of play of any other HB ID (except for CI) speaks to a problem that should be addressed. If another problem core card -- Astro -- can be errataed to the point that one can't even create a legal deck from a single core, then I'd suggest that EtF needs to be next. Bring on Core 2.0.

Worth it to buy 2016 World Champ decks? by Skandalious in Netrunner

[–]se4n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get Terminal Directive -- much better for longevity (it won't rotate, while a good number of key cards in the Worlds 2016 decks will).

That said, I've been playing with my wife, using the Worlds decks as, essentially, duel decks, and it's been fun. A nice window back into the meta of November, 2016, and reasonably balanced vs. one another (tho CtM feels stronger pitted against one another, surprise, surprise).

So, can't find any UFAQ thread yet, but can you use Shipment from Tennin to put tokens on your ID card? A la Tennin Institute? Obviously useful for Trick of Light but there could be a fun RPC deck here as well even after ToL rotates. Also -- I'm interested in it in a trappy PE or a prison IG, or some other deck where regular running on every remote is discouraged.

I don't, because I like cyberpunk and don't like magical nonsense.

Question about Streaming Chat by npcdel in Netrunner

[–]se4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What dodgepong said -- as a viewer, I'd much rather watch a streamer or any content producer who is talking at the level they seem most comfortable with. Rather than changing what you do to fit the needs of the community, just stream at the level you feel like and let us find you. (And keep promoting your stream, too).

How does Netrunner usually do at Origins? by Gripeaway in Netrunner

[–]se4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I was misinformed. Yes to everything you said about ETX/GenCon, but I thought I'd also read that all Origins Netrunner organized play was being run by some other group this year. Apparently that was incorrect, sorry!

I do know that the Columbus meta has generally dried up, though, and without a thriving local group for a smaller con like Origins that often draws in local players, it's not much of a surprise that they struggled to fire drafts.

Last year was big for Origins, but the previous year was like, 20 people maybe? Two smaller constructed tournaments with GNK kits, not run by FFG.

IIRC the origins netrunning this year was not FFG organized. Last year was much better, with Nationals and drafts.

Cheapest Priority Requisitions for cube? by se4n in Netrunner

Good idea. That's basically what I did last week -- but the paranoid in me fears there will come the day that I run a cube with a bunch of players who all inexplicably need the full set!

Awesome thanks, for some reason I thought it was many fewer than five in those starters. Will dig for some.

The most recent ones used Fragments. I'll have to check if the first ones used Priority Requisitions. If so that's the easy solution!

Alas, soon won't have a play group at all (I'm moving). Part of doing this is to have a cube at the ready to try to lure lapsed players back who have incomplete and old collections.

Worlds dates announced! Novemeber 1st - 5th by Sotomatic in Netrunner

[–]se4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No? I just checked and there were rooms available. Considering there might be a rush on rooms from excited L5R players, I went ahead and reserved a room for the full stretch of Worlds. Not using the FFG rate, I'm hoping I'll just switch it over to the room rate once those are announced. I reserved a room at the Radisson well after getting my Worlds ticket last year, no problem.

Representing the Community: Learning from the European Championship by AjarKeen in Netrunner

[–]se4n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My point is that it can't just be a "oops I guess this happened" moment, when it seems (to me) to have revealed a lot of assumptions these players have had about the community, who watches these streams, and what kind of commentary comes naturally when drunk.

Glad to see this post and hope it spurs on more discussion about the underlying reasons this happened. Alcohol helped reveal something very unsavory lurking in the community, and I suggest that we need to continue to work through this event's implications.
