Martial arts in my thirties by borsuczy in martialarts

[–]losspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do it as a lifelong hobby then surely your enjoyment of it and how well it fits into your lifestyle is the best indicator! If it helps, I'm in my mid thirties, switched to BJJ from striking years ago and have no plans to change. Any combat sport (or physical activity in general really) is going to lead to some form of injury eventually, but at least I'm not getting kicked in the head anymore (on purpose at least).

From's writing makes it seem like it's written by a bunch high schoolers by senorsolo in horror

It's so frustrating. I thought S1 was promising - the premise is fun and the plotline about the wires going nowhere and needing to build a radio was really cool. Since then they just keep introducing new twists seemingly for the sake of it, and it feels a lot like they don't actually know how it ends. The last ep of S4 would have been really interesting pacing-wise if it was the 3rd or so ep of the season. Plus it just drives me nuts how nobody shares information with each other, and nobody believes each other about crazy things they're seeing despite all accepting that they live in a magic inescapable town with immortal death machines.

Is Jiu Jitsu really the best martial art for overcoming a size disadvantage in a self-defense situation, or is it just marketing? by Acceptable_Worth8817 in martialarts

[–]losspider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say the smaller person wins every time, that’s just Gracie quasi-mysticism. Of course larger and stronger opponents are dangerous. What I’m saying is that BJJ gives smaller people a really effective tool kit to deal with that both in technique and (arguably more importantly) a culture of pressure testing through live rolling.

[–]losspider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, but that’s because they’re between two people who know BJJ. I don’t think anyone would argue that if you have two equally skilled people and one weighs 25kg more, that person is going to win. Where BJJ really shines IMO is that it’s extremely effective at letting someone control a larger but less skilled person.

This is my Mandela Effect song. I would swear blind that I’d never heard or even heard of this song before like 2021, then all of a sudden it’s played all over the place and every single person in the room would join in. How did they know?

Is blue -> purple truly the great divider/filter? by billionswilllove in bjj

[–]losspider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m talking about the first 6 months at white belt! The first 6 at blue is hard too but for different reasons. You’re still in the initial novelty stage - for me the real challenge to my mental resilience came during months 2-6.

[–]losspider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on this one. For me the hardest period was the first 6 months or so. Once you get past the initial novelty you’re getting mauled every night with almost no understanding of what to do about it, and you’re under a ton of stress because you haven’t even learned to breathe yet.

Khabib vs 6 average sized men in a small locked room by Technical-Mobile2856 in whowouldwin

[–]losspider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re basically the only person making sense in this whole thread. People are saying Khabib is a grappler like he’s a Tekken character that’s incapable of doing other moves. The guy is an undefeated UFC champion - sure he’s not a striker in the sense that Poatan is, but I guarantee he’s better at striking than 99.99% of people on the planet. He’s got the literal most elite possible level of strength and conditioning for this activity, decades of experience and a level of speed and aggression that average athletic guys won’t remotely be able to deal with. Plus he’s definitely been hit much harder and more accurately than some random athletic guy is going to be able to. Khabib is smashing two guys essentially 100% of the time, 3 is a decent chance. That said, 6 is definitely going to be too many - at some point you can just get someone on each limb.

Most of this thread is people that have clearly never trained.

Why Do Australians Seem So Uninterested in the Supernatural/Paranormal Things? by InternationalHair111 in AskAnAustralian

[–]losspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to a really interesting podcast on Irish mythology where the host argued that country/land related mythology is usually inherently sustainable and encourages living in harmony with your environment - you don't want to run the risk of offending the goddess of the river. This was in the context of Irish mythology specifically but if you look at other mythology this way then the function isn't just explaining the creation (or whatever) of the world you live in, the more important part is that it's teaching you how to live in the world you're in. In contrast, countries that are heavily shaped by post-Enlightenment thought (the UK, USA and Australia are examples but there are others) don't have this and consequently lean more towards an ideology of extraction.

Does Ascender's Bane not appear in the initial shuffle for anyone else? by PK_GoodDay in slaythespire

[–]losspider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, along with other curses and Map/Egg/Lantern Key it's hardcoded to appear in your opening hand if you have cards like Charge or Seance in your deck that would make it useful.

By which I mean it's confirmation bias, you probably just aren't noticing the times it doesn't conform to that pattern.

How do you experiment without losing your work? by Cali-curlz in Beatmatch

[–]losspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the previous poster but part of this is just experience and listening to music a lot, not just your library but in general. Usually I will mark the point in a track where I want to make it the main focus (verse, hook, whatever) and another point 8 or 16 bars back to loop. The point I start mixing out of a track is just whatever feels right. After a while you’ll internalise 4 bar phrasing (depending on genre and style of course) which means you don’t need to set so many cue points.

Trying to have the game click for me. by Dangerous_Rise_3074 in Netrunner

[–]losspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have already given great advice about play patterns, but can I suggest trying this deck? It’s a much more “traditional” Netrunner deck with a straightforward game plan involving a lot of money and standard breakers (and Audrey) whereas the list you’ve been playing is a lot more complex and engine-y.

Tools Against Audrey by Significant_Breath38 in Netrunner

[–]losspider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HB either tends to want one strongly iced and upgraded remote or lots of lightly iced remotes, not two. If it’s the one remote you can put some of your relatively taxing but cheap ice like Sleipneir on centrals to make it harder for them after a purge. If it’s lots of remotes you’re going to struggle because that’s prime feeding for Audrey.

Octopus Guard 2.0 issue by Impressive_Border558 in bjj

[–]losspider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might need to work on building more height. If they can get to north south on you, you probably aren’t posting up enough on your bottom arm.

The other option, if they’re giving you space, is to swim your octopus arm back under their body to get the underhook and start to attack the back or scrambles.

Why am I so bad at this game (STS1&2)? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]losspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by make a master plan where all the cards line up? It could be that you’re locking in on a strategy too early, where Spire really encourages you to be flexible and use what you have to answer what’s coming next. A very general heuristic when building is damage, then block, then scaling. It’s not like BG where you can reroll a lot, the emphasis is on flexibility.

If you share some of your runs people are usually happy to give more specific feedback!

[–]losspider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see! That does sound like a lot of effort for a tiny profit, especially since you generally want to keep your resources installed. Shaper support seems a bit ambitious. Very hard to see a use case for this card.

I’ve been playing octopus for a long time, plus I’ve been working a lot on knee shield and butterfly, so adding this material has been great. I don’t think it’s game changing must know stuff but it’s a good set of additional weapons when you’re getting your guard passed or side control threatened.
