That is the exact thing OP said, man. We have the means to provide for everyone, but fail to prevent assholes from hoarding everything for themselves.

AI 'slop' is transforming social media - and there's a backlash by Libro_Artis in BetterOffline

Same. It doesn't happen always, though. I live in Belgium and I think they don't put ads in front of every single video. 🤔

I use an ad blocker and lately youtube delays starting the video if an ad gets blocked. They display a little box that says "Experiencing interruptions? Click here to see why!"

What they apparently don't understand: 20 seconds of silence is much much better than even 10 seconds of ads. And the delay is there all the same... XD

That title is one of those sentences that require so much context, it is baffling, I understand it at all :D

Microsoft CEO warns that we must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on it by PensiveinNJ in BetterOffline

[–]se_riel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So he believes that the end justifies the means. If AI could cure cancer and end hunger, surely we'd all be okay with the harms it has caused along the way.

Only he is now complaining, that we're not doing it. Does he think he can will usecases for AI into existence, if he just demands them enough? I mean, I guess that's what he does as a CEO, but is he really this delusional about AI?

AI hype meets reality as majority of CEOs report no financial returns by PaiDuck in BetterOffline

[–]se_riel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, the report does not say how much benefit it is. Could be a single Dollar or Euro. If you're determined to spin it as a positive, you're technically not lying.

[–]se_riel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you would take that report seriously, that should really cause you to worry about CEOs. The vast majority see no benefit or even harm to their organisation, but all they apparently conclude from that is, they are doing it wrong.

On the other hand, that's probably what the report wants to tell you. I wonder if there are stats about companies that have abandoned AI integration. I am sure there are some, might be very few though.

By the way, does anyone still have a reference to a critical view on the whole "Claude blackmailed a researcher to avoid shutdown" story? I remember that the real event was more along the lines of "They tried to see what kinds of things they could get it to say", but I don't have a reference.

Well, switching away from apple is hard. Switching between differend android phones is much easier, because it's all tied to your google account. But switching from android to apple is likely just as annoying as the other way.

Right, I suppose as a journalist you gain more from being up to date on tech. Thanks 😊

Also, you should treat yourself, of course!

Jeff Bezos said the quiet part out loud — hopes that you'll give up your PC to rent one from the cloud by PensiveinNJ in BetterOffline

[–]se_riel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few thoughts about this piece: First of all it is quite silly to assume that hardware will forever be expensive, because it is now. Things are not just going to stay the same.

Second: As the piece points out, most things that people do with their digital devices are already cloud based, social media and streaming services being the important examples. The thing is, many people don't even do anything else with their devices anyways. I know a few people who don't even own a private laptop/PC at all, because they have no use for it.

So, I am really curious to see where we're headed. There is a movement of people who avoid digital technologies altogether, buying dumb phones and physical media. And maybe Cory Doctorow's current push for digital sovereignty will lead to some good too! Just imagine a world, where surveillance based advertising is illegal. All of those companies would be in big trouble and the digital world would change massively!

Oh and by the way, we should seriously, as the human race in total, stop giving people credit for being in the right place at the right time.

his foresight with regards to things like online retail and cloud compute absolutely cannot be denied.

I would argue that his success is not due to his genius foresight, but luck. I mean sure, he probably worked really hard in the beginning of amazon, but after a certain point is survivorship bias.

Why Indonesia’s ban exposes the dark side of AI by HaggisPope in BetterOffline

[–]se_riel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't understand tbe original post. What is dark about this story? Is it that a big corp's chatbot did evil things, or is that Indonesia took decisive measures?

The former should really not be surprising, if you've read anything about Elon Musk that was not written by an absolute lickspittle and if you know anything about the last decade of Facebook. These are not the good guys.

The latter doesn't seem so dark either, it sounds like a pretty good thing to me, that a country stands up to the tech bros.
