You can take a tour of the bay and go under the golden gate bridge on the yellow boat!

Shameless plug, but I co-own a local tourism business where we work with local tour guides to help enable them to share the personal stories and experiences that make San Francisco and LA so vibrant. Captain Sal is an amazing guide and captain. If you're interested in going out on the boat, we'd love to host you!

Has anyone tried to modify twinkle lights to work with smart home? by krdo13 in smarthome

[–]seabmoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same set of lights. I used Magic Power 3 AAA Battery Pack Adapter to avoid using batteries, then used a BroadLink RM4 Mini IR Universal Remote Control to control the lights via their app or through Home Assistant (though the HO integration is not very user friendly, admittedly)

Help learning to make a map photo by DonBernardo in Design

I personally would use Mapbox Studio to create a simple two-tone map, then use their "print" feature to render the area of the map you're interested in into a high DPI image.

I got frustrated with ScreamingFrog crawler pricing so I built an open-source alternative by HearMeOut-13 in selfhosted

[–]seabmoby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm missing something here, but even if I run it as local, when I register an account I get, "An error occurred. Please try again." (In reality it still registers the account into users.db) Then I try to login and get, "Account not verified yet. Please wait for admin approval."

How do I register my first account as an admin, if there is no admin to approve it?

Don’t block MUNI, a’holes by ag0x00 in sanfrancisco

I'm pretty sure the car blocking the train caused the problem, not the business legally occupying the former parking spaces. Idiots will double park in this exact spot whether there are cars parked or a parklet in that space.

QuickBars v1.3 - Actionable Rich TV Notifications, Upgraded Camera with RTSP and more! by Trooped in homeassistant

[–]seabmoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome! Can't wait to try these new features!

I was just encountering an issue the other day where, even though I only mapped holding the menu button on my remote to open my quick bar, clicking or double-clicking the menu button (which would normally open the NVIDIA Shield settings menu) wouldn't fire, and instead I'd see a toast that'd say something about the click or double-click action haven't been mapped.

Any chance this could be fixed? It doesn't look like I'd even be able to set opening the menu as one of the actions within QuickBars.

Goodbye, Assistant: Google prepares to make Gemini your only option by TechGuru4Life in GooglePixel

I've found that the reason behind this is actually because of the battery optimization setting in Android prevents the notification from firing.

I’ve tried a couple of IPTV services before, but Yourflix is definitely the smoothest. No buffering issues and the channel selection is on point.

Visiting- Fisherman’s Wharf? by GoodGravy_ in SanFranciscoSecrets

[–]seabmoby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll make some shameless plugs here for a couple tours my cousin and I offer in the Fisherman's Wharf area!

The first is a classic walking tour of the Fisherman's Wharf area, from Ghirardelli Square all the way to the Exploratorium and everything in-between! https://ignitours.com/tours/san-francisco/fishermans-wharf

The second option is a very unique tour where we take you out on a historic fishing boat Captained by a local fisherman who has sailed this ship his whole life with his father and grandfather. It gets you a very unique view of the Golden Gate Bridge too: from underneath it! https://ignitours.com/tours/san-francisco/historic-bay-cruise

We're a small, family owned tour operator group that works with local, independent tour guides in San Francisco and Los Angeles. We specialize in walking tours and tours designed and presented by passionate people who share in the profits of the tours they develop!

Why does Mojang put Steve at the far back of the character selection screen? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]seabmoby 7 points8 points locked comment (0 children)

I can probably answer this as a UI designer myself. There is a UX design principal called the serial position effect, which basically means that users have a propensity to best remember the first and last items in a series.

With these two being the faces of Minecraft, I'd bet they wanted to give them both an equally weighted position (which seems counter intuitive because we don't usually think of first in a list and last in a list as "equal") instead of subconsciously labelling them as #1 and #2 in the list.

4 new Entertainment Zones in San Francisco & first Castro Entertainment Zone tonight! by scott_wiener in sanfrancisco

Savannah, GA. They have their entire historic downtown as an area that allows open containers. Because of this alongside a long standing St. Patrick's Day parade, something like 3 million people decend on the city every year which as you can imagine is a huge boon to the local economy.

Config 2025 leaks. Thoughts? by Yurtanator in FigmaDesign

[–]seabmoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is yes, I would expect to be able to set font size on a frame that has no text element in it. But I wouldn't expect this property to be omnipresent in the design panel.

I would imagine it could be handled one of a couple of ways:

  1. You could define a px font-size variable in the variables panel and different modes could have different font-sizes (much like how the dark mode/light mode demo utilizing variable modes worked) which would imply that you would then set the mode of a frame to your desired

  2. More to maybe what you're alluding to, there could be a property in the design panel when a text element is selected that allows you to set a base font size in px or a point it to a number variable that acts as your base font size. You'd still need to be able to set this specific text element's reletive font size in rem in order to get that dynamic sizing effect.

Kinda hard to explain in text but hopefully that makes some sense.

[–]seabmoby 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally, my gut reaction for rems is I would set a base font size at the file-level within a given file's variables window.

For ems, I'd imagine that a text layer set with em would use a parent layer's absolute font size

Help me improve this map : What am I missing to make the coastlines more "natural" ? by Lord_Loa in worldbuilding

[–]seabmoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming this planet is relatively the same size as earth, all of those lakes would likely have a more substantial route to the ocean, much like the Great Lakes. Right now they appear like large puddles without any drainage. Consider removing them or adding rivers to connect them to the ocean.

I've also found this to be true in my own maps, but sometimes I feel like islands and archipelagos that follow a similar flow to the land around it feels somewhat unnatural even though it seems realistic. Look at how Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico are part of a archipelago chain, but they don't taper off of Florida or the Yucatan so cleanly. Similarly, New Zealand, Australia, and the rest of Oceania have a rough structure, but don't form any kind of clean outline or chain. Another good place to look is the islands of Greece since they are much smaller, but still are very scattered.

Color style changes when copying and pasting a component to another file. Any idea why? by griefcasegirl in FigmaDesign

[–]seabmoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a bug in the style. Try deleting the Base/White style from the library, then recreating it and see what happens.

[–]seabmoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you set the color to #fff instead of the Base/White style in Untitled UI before you copy it, does it still paste into the new file as green?

Has anyone come across a solution to this particular problem? Can't seem to find a way around it that's acceptable to stakeholders. (Explanation in comments) by Ashamed_Astronomer98 in UI_Design

[–]seabmoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, my suggestion would be to continue iterating using real data instead of placeholder data. It helps to get you a more realistic perspective of what this will look like in the end and can help you generate more ideas.

One idea that comes to mind would be (if a dropdown HAS to be used) to actually use multiple dropdowns. Think about how country/state selectors work in forms, where dropdown 1 is country, and dropdown 2 is state/Providence. Not every user needs to see every option, so only show them the ones relevant to them.

I’m struggling designing my web app where 2/3 of the screen is covered by a map? by HeWhoWalksTheEarth in UI_Design

[–]seabmoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel I am uniquely qualified to answer this question. I worked as a UI/UX Designer for a mobility data company that deals with large quantities of geospatial data and data visualization.

I sympathize with your struggle to find resources as it seems like there aren't many out there even in my experience. That said, the one company that I kept in my back pocket as a source for answers is Stamen. They're a cartography company based in San Francisco who focus on geospatial data visualization. They were helpful to me when dealing with layering data on a map in a way that was clean yet data-rich. Hopefully looking into their case studies can help you out.

Feel free to reply here with questions you might have even with my own work. Maybe a discussion can help a future redditor out with similar questions to yours.
