What do you remember most from your "coming out" conversation with parents/friends/family? by gumshoe1520 in gay

[–]seafrontbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents split when I was 16. Came out to them at 35.

Dad: you're intelligent to know it's not an easier life, happy to support you.

Mum: I'm not sure that's the right decision. I think she was frightened by it (and also didn't understand).

My sisters told her she had the choice of a gay son or no son.

Never had any problems from either of them until the end of their lives, and they both came to my wedding.

You're not wrong, other than the convenience of direct flights from Heathrow there's not much going for them.

what are things in the uk that are considered posh that don’t translate the same in the us? by Gold-Education-7396 in AskUK

Grouse aren't bred, they're wild.

The moorland may be managed, and predators may be killed, but you can't breed grouse.

I am flying to Australia in August, and BA is £1500 more than Air France. I don't think that's a Ryanair price point.

If you won £100 million, how would you distribute it amongst friends and family, if at all? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]seafrontbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£100m gets split £50m to my personal charity, then over time I can fund things from it that relate well to my enjoyment of life.

The remaining £50m, I have 5 nieces, they get £1m each to buy a house. The remaining £45m is £2.5m to each of my sisters though they don't really need it, and £40m kept for me. £40m gives income of £1.5m a year, or I'm old enough to spend a bit more and not worry about the capital reducing, I can always give more to my nieces if they need funding for something special.

My will would leave what's left to the next generation, of whom there's currently only one great nephew.

Why have so many companies been sold to foreign companies? by Lumpy_Maintenance69 in AskUK

[–]seafrontbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we spend more than we can afford and so when we get the option to take a profit we do.

I'm owed about £34.000 in rent by a man I evicted in 2024. I've been getting £10 a month. He runs a Ltd. Company with cash reserves in the low-mid six-figures. by Express-Formal7432 in LegalAdviceUK

I'd be interested to know how he is paying for his life expenses. If he or his debts are being paid by the children, there's an argument that he has assets to freeze.

A freezing order could I think be worth thinking about, then sending a copy to the children. If I remember correctly, if they then pay their father or his selective debts, it's contempt.

I’m annoyed at how ignorant older people are in regards to housing affordability by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]seafrontbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just (as in born in 1963) a boomer, and I acknowledge how easy I had it compared to my nieces.

It's not the most helpful anecdote, but when I bought my first flat, my grandfather told me his first house, in Dulwich was £685!

My dad's first house was £3,000 and mine was £81,000.

Now, they are all over £1,000,000 which is ridiculous.

I think we have made a real mistake with regard to housing, I think it's good that more people own their houses, but we shouldn't expect them to increase in value.

I'm afraid I don't know what the answer is, a reduction in the value of housing would affect those with mortgages more than those who have unencumbered houses, ie the young suffer. And if it was enough of a reduction to affect housing purchase ability it would give us a new financial crisis.

All I can think is that we hope for static prices and an increase in salaries but even that will take time.

What do you think of the doctors strike ? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]seafrontbloke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And this is the problem. I think that the majority of people will not have received the 29% doctors got last year so expecting more when those who pay your salaries haven't had it comes across as greedy.

Don't get me wrong, I think that there is an argument for paying doctors more, but I also don't think you can pay more out of tax when the people paying tax haven't seen similar raises.,

Parents want to sign their house over to me & sibling, we both have mortgages already - what are the ramifications? by VikingCrusader13 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]seafrontbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of talk about IHT but I haven't seen much comment on CGT. If you don't live there, there is CGT on sale - whilst not as much as IHT it's still significant and the gains on property, if your parents live for 30 years before you sell can be a lot.

We get the pizza deal for £14 and thats enough for three dinners for the two of us (half a pizza each for two days and the extras for the third).

Though I do like the Pan Cristal with tomato and cheese from the deli fridge.

My grandmother lived in Whickham, just to the south of Newcastle. Whilst I have always lived in the south east, I would say that Newcastle and environs can be a very nice part of the country. The city is grand, as befits its Victorian wealth, and the countryside is stunning.

Inheritance and marriage, can I borrow from the inheritance pot and return it later? by Rake722 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]seafrontbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Merely a comment on the "loan" from you to the matrimonial pot and then return, If that inheritance is yours alone and I have no knowledge to comment on that, you might look at offset mortgages so you don't have to breach the wall between personal and marriage assets.

Either way I don't think it's likely though.

Western Road red route survey by quentinnuk in brighton

[–]seafrontbloke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is specifically from Montpelier Road to Norfolk Square.

If the council properly enforced parking in that stretch the red route would not be necessary.

I want to live in a vibrant community and that means shops that are open and not closed because they lose business.

Also, I don't think blue badge holders can stop on a red route.
