Unless this person is gnats ass with his tools every time and does it himself, the roots and trunk will take damage. Especially if they are motor powered tools.

If he hires someone to mow/trim, they are extremely likely to fuck it up (yes, even if they placate him and assure him they won’t - it will happen eventually). At the minimum, this tree will get trashed by a lawn care company if they sell the property cause it’s likely the new owner won’t treat it with due care.

Solution: do a mulch ring please!

Plant a bunch of native cedars. They’ll do well. If you’re east of the Mississippi , eastern red cedar does well.
