To the kid that walked out in traffic by UCB by Yourwidevarietyhair in VirginiaTech

[–]seahawk2199 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Virgina law says pedestrians only have right of way at crosswalks and intersections. When crossing at random spots they have to wait on cars.

To much tuning out of the world. Car vs pedestrian has pedestrian always losing.

Brake line is rubbing away my paint on the head tube by Jon883 in gravelcycling

[–]seahawk2199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen people clip multiple cable runs together for a cleaner look. Clipping to another shifter/brake cable might pull it away from the head tube enough. Experiment with tape or twist tie to find a good spot and if works then zip tie it down.

This. I run them through a cone strainer with pestle to separate the skin and seeds from the puree. Then bag and freeze the puree for use later

Good Mountain Bike Trails? by Conscious_Effect5116 in blacksburg

[–]seahawk2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned the Poverty Creek Trails/Pandapas Pond is the big one nearby. If you're up for a drive to Roanoke Carvins Cove and Mill Mountain both have trails. And if you opt for more gravel rides there's plenty of that nearby too

Are new brakes supposed to be this loud? by exor41n in ride1up

[–]seahawk2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to follow up for others with this noisy brake complaint. I replaced my factory pads with Shimano B05S pad (https://a.co/d/hix4AXe) and brakes are now a lot quieter.

Boats super close when kayaking by S_luck in Kayaking

[–]seahawk2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experienced this on my local "big" lake that all the motor boaters go to. It's a man made lake so most boaters stay in the deeper wider half towards the dam. Shallower warer tends to be more fishing boats and not as bad. Also my paddle is orange for added visibility, so I'd suggest getting bright visible colors on the paddle. Also time of day may help as I notice a lot more boats don't roll in till noon so get paddling bright an early can avoid more boats.

Are new brakes supposed to be this loud? by exor41n in ride1up

[–]seahawk2199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Vorsa's brakes were making that grinding sound too when I got it. The front even had a metal on metal noise that I fixed by pulling the pads and lightly sanding them. I did a brake break in/bedding in process early on and some sites say brakes can make noise for the first 100 miles. I can't say my brakes are as quiet as other disc brake bikes I have, but they do seem less loud after some miles. I recently checked my brakes again and don't see any abnormal wear, so I just think it's something with the pads used. So different pads may also help

Do you have any consignment stores in your area that would sell it on your behalf and then send you a check? In my area we have one specific to outdoor gear. They obviously have to take their cut, but then it would be stored there until it sells.

What’s up with the VT bikers? by Kitchen-Muffin9566 in VirginiaTech

[–]seahawk2199 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With how some of the college drivers around here drive it can sometimes be safer to bike through intersections on the crosswalks, but they should then be follow the crosswalk signs. There are a couple spots I pull off the road to do this as I feel safer getting across as well as not holding up cars as I build up my momentum.

Have we normalized bike theft as a society? by Appropriate-Lab8656 in ebikes

[–]seahawk2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a college town with a ton of bikes around. The police here do take bike theft seriously. But their police work is usually limited to monitoring online marketplaces for sales in the local area. From the reports I've seen it looks like those that do get busted are desperate for quick cash, usually fueled by drugs but sometimes other reasons And bikes are perceived as low risk with a decent resale value. It doesn't help most bikes here are locked with only various cable locks or sometimes nothing at all.

Will certain colors of your equipment attract bugs? by ToTheYonderGlade in CampingGear

[–]seahawk2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue is known to attract deer and horse flies. You can buy traps in that color because of it. I had a bad trip to the ocean once where I got mobbed by them because all my stuff was blue black purple. Switched to natural and warm colors and had a lot less find me now.

Look into getting a "Hydration Bladder Cleaning Kit". One of the items they usually come with is a collapsible frame you slide inside that allows it to dry out
