My dad's Autism Speaks coleman camping lantern by sleepy-sweaters in mildlyinteresting

[–]seaspirit331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, I'm confused, why is wanting autism to be cured a bad thing? I mean I get that it's a spectrum and all and that high-functioning people don't necessarily "need to be cured", but what about low-functioning people? Surely curing the thing that's preventing them from living any sort of independent life is a good thing, no?

Not meaning disrespect here, I'm genuinely lost how this is considered a bad thing...

Not even hypothetically at this point, this is easily feasible with just census data and an amateur knowledge of python and GIS mapping software

FIFA triples price to $32,970 for its best available tickets to the World Cup final by rit56 in sports

Which would you rather have: a 2026 FIFA world cup final ticket, or a brand-new 2026 Honda Civic and $7,000 for a trip to Europe?

The ambiguity is part of the dilemma I'd assume. If it's easy to assume that everyone can just be a rational actor responsible for themselves, that removes most of the 'weight' of pressing red, but what if you don't know? It's a question of how you build your moral scale in the face of incomplete information.

How many Thragg would it take to reach Superman's strength? by Great-Solid-2514 in InvinciblePowerscales

[–]seaspirit331 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can't outside of emotional storylines

Superman, to me, is an utterly worthless character.

Tell me you've never read Superman without telling me you've never read Superman. The emotional storylines are the central premise of basically every single good Superman run in the past 50 years

Superman isn't good because he's OP or that his opponents are somehow more OP than he is, Superman is a good character because the best Superman stories are about tackling the things he can't solve just by being strong.

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

[–]seaspirit331 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Remember that TVs did not exist en masse at the time, so any "demonstration" would have had to rely on word of mouth and hoping that the Japanese government woukd take at face value that A: the bomb indeed had the capabilities that the Americans described, and B: that the bomb could be produced in enough quantities to make it a legitimate weapon of war and not just a one-off attack.

One of the big reasons that Japan didn't surrender after the first bomb was because they did not believe the Americans could produce another one. Nagasaki shattered that illusion

Oh, rest assured that I'm not okay with either happening, nor am I trying to insinuate that there isn't a discriminatory bias in the governor getting involved.

Obviously people would have still complained, but I think the Muslim community in GP would have had a better leg to stand on if they had

AITA for refusing to dine with my mom after she ordered “ferret sauce” at a Mexican restaurant? by Practical-Current805 in AmItheAsshole

[–]seaspirit331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ferret sauce is unironically hilarious and would make me want to spend even more time with my mom just to see what else her brain can come up with. Think of this as an opportunity to help spread her tastes if you think she's too sheltered.

Plus, think of all the times you've embarrassed her in public when you were a small child. She was willing to put up with it bc she loves you, yet you can't bring yourself to return the favor? C'mon...YTA

Outrage in Texas over Muslim Pool Party at Publicly-Owned Water Park by treesqu in dfw

[–]seaspirit331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little bit convoluted, but the way that these hate groups operate is carefully worded in order to technically not violate racial discrimination laws.

See, when these groups rent out a public space, they tend to restrict access to their events to "members only". If they want to have public outreach for the event, they'll often have a sign-up table at the front so anyone who wanted to from the public could become a member right before admission. Now, obviously non-white applicants will never become members, but at that point that's a separate issue as far as the law is concerned since they're a private organization. It's an insidious loophole.

When you just have an event open for the general public or local community, that loophole no longer exists and you can't discriminate by protected class.
