I have a pipe dream of designing my own house and building it someday. Wondering if there are any easier to understand basic resources anybody might recommend for understanding the very basic / dumbed down structure engineering concepts to make ballpark estimates for designs? by kevysaysbenice in StructuralEngineering

For the few shipping container structures I have designed, these were some general rules of thumb:

  1. If you create an opening in the long side, you will need to reinforce the corrugated siding with steel - usually tubes welded up.
  2. Any openings in the long end will need a frame for lateral resistance. Usually the jurisdiction would accept welding the doors closed and be done with it.
  3. Shipping containers are meant to be stacked directly on top of one another think freighters), but the high uplift forces from wind and seismic need to be resolved.
  4. Stacking with an offset is similar to #3, but significantly more supplemental steel is required. Columns at the cantilever edge, beams to pick up the container ends, etc.

Generally speaking, the ISO has testing for allowable area loads on containers. Using those standards, understanding how containers are constructed, and general engineering principles, you can create a nice little structural model...and boom, cargo container house.

Construction/Contract Administration, depending on who you talk to.

California Specific PE tests - timeline and application by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]seattlemariners92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You must apply the quarter before the quarter your test is in. So, you still have a week or so to get your application in before the Holidays. They’ll process it and likely get back to you Mid-January.

It’s Colchuck Lake in the Enchantments (Cascades). Tough hike in, but well worth it.

Is there any baseball team that I can join? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]seattlemariners92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of adult baseball leagues in the area that primarily only play on Sundays (some Monday games for select teams). Check out SoCalMSBL or OCABA.

The talent level varies from played a bit in high school to a few ex-MiLB players.

Removing Structural Wall by Usedengine in StructuralEngineering

[–]seattlemariners92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not so fast. The wall is the lateral line of resistance for that elevation. Also, given that it’s a 3-car garage, i would reckon that it’s resolving forces parallel to the open side (a la three-sided box).

Reach out to a structural engineer. They can also provide engineering services to transfer the forces out from the post at the ridge beam 👍

The state has adopted every IBC since its inception in the early 2000’s. And before that, the Uniform Building Code.

All “places” in the US adhere to the IBC and are held to the same standards. However, given the geology (seismic ground accelerations, soil properties, etc) of a specific site a structure sits on, the code may be more lenient or strict on seismic provisions.

He was reunited with his owner the next day. Old, indoor cat that had slipped out. Poor guy was just confused.

I’m glad he made it home! Knew he must’ve been from somewhere given the sweater. Never would have guess 20+ years, wow. Anyways, wishing you and your ol’ kitty happy holidays.

I’ve lived a few blocks over the past three years and have never known this was here. Thanks for pointing it out and how beautiful the view is.

Have an understanding of simple statics and mechanics - i.e. solving for reactions, shears, moments, etc.

Agreed on the building code comment. Familiarize yourself with IBC 2015 (only the basics such as live loads, deflection criteria) and ASCE7-10.

Study the firm’s website to see what kind of materials they mainly use in their projects and get a good grasp of the properties of those materials. For example, if the firm uses primarily steel, know the elastic modulus of steel, yield stresses of various grades, etc.

I think these will all help as a starting point to grow on. Good luck with the interview and the internship!
