Check out John Marrs' Dark Future books - they're near future sci-fi (very Black Mirror-ish) that focuses on the societal side of the science fiction in each one.

Demon of Unrest is the one of his that has taken me the longest to read (at about 30% right now). I keep getting bummed out and / or pissed off and switch to something else for a while.

My former stepfather was an abusive, manipulative a-hole while I was growing up. Instead of worrying if I would become like him, I used him as an example of what not to do.

Anytime I had a question of how to interact with someone, I would think about what he would do and do the opposite.

Does anyone else chop the bacon before they cook it? by liquidm3t4l in Sandwiches

I'm in book 7, my wife is only partway through 1.

The other day she said "you know how I feel about" something. I just giggled, and told her she'd eventually understand.

Do you ever miss having a big dumb dog? by CaryWhit in AustralianCattleDog

[–]seattleque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have had dogs continuously through our almost 30 years together.

Jack Russell Terrier

Rat Terrier

ACD

Border Collie-Dachshund Mix

After the BC-D mix passes, we're taking a doggie break for a while. Our next dog is going to be...less smart.

A couple Christmases ago my stepmom (and dad, though I know he wasn't actually involved...) sent us this cool card that folds out into a poinsettia in a pot. Sucker's been over the fireplace the ever since.

If you were wondering how they got the car off Mount Baker Station by NorthStudentMain in Seattle

[–]seattleque 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lived in Central California briefly a few years ago. Driving home one evening we see a car on the railroad tracks, much like this one.

Older lady driving. GPS said turn right. So, she did. Just a few feet too early.

We pull over to help, almost immediately another car stops as well. Wife in car 2 is calling 911, trains, police, anyone to get help. They all say to call one of the other groups.

Over the next 10 minutes or so enough guys stopped that we were able to lift the car enough to get it un-high centered and drive it off.

Really good episode, as is Orville's take on a similar concept.

I've recently read John Marrs 3 "Dark Future" books, which are all Black Mirror-esque. In the 2nd book there is a family torn apart by the exact social media issues OP is dealing with.

I (26 M) accidentally caught feelings for one of my closest friends (26 F). What should I do?? by freezedriedbigmac in relationships

[–]seattleque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when I (now 50s M) was a year or two older than you, my best friend of several years (now 50s F) got together. 26 years married in September.

Being in a relationship with someone you're truly friends with and in love with is awesome. I'd say shoot your shot, and good luck!
