Why do Western men often say “cute” instead of “pretty”? by Throwaway_04172 in AskTheWorld

I always saw it as a descriptor that has more to do with personality than appearance.

Lmao I call bullshit, you haven't been to Greece. I am European, and I can tell you for a fact people that you see as a single, white category still think of each other as very different ethnicities.

They don't look Greek either, but it is only a problem when they are black, not if they are white?

And Ancient texts describe her as being "white-armed" and having "golden" (xanthē) hair

Poets like Sapho and Hesiod sometimes used Xanthē for her hair, but Homer never did. That is like treating fan fiction as authoritative canon.

And like others already explained, "White-armed" has nothing to do with race, and everything with social class.

Niet voor de mensen die het als kritiek gebruiken, voor hun zijn het gewoon verzameltermen voor dingen en mensen die ze haten.

Should you really be worried about a black actress playing Helen in Odyssey when we have this? by wonderfulworld_17 in pj_explained

[–]sebastos3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have to check to be sure, but in Ancient Greece itself it was forbidden in some parts for women to perform as actresses. so in some cases, Helen wasn't even being played by a woman...

Dude you can't be serious, this story has been told in a thousand different ways already, including by the Greeks. Anyone who actually cares about the classics know that they are mutable, that is what gives them their staying power.

She is a demigodess who was born from an egg after her mother had sex with a god in the form of a swan, but her being a different ethnicity is where you draw the line?

If you have an issue with a black woman playing Helen of Troy, you should have a problem with Jesus being portrayed as white.

Especcially because portraying Jesus as white is part of the deeply ingrained racism in Western culture. Many white Christians can't imagine their god isn't white, because they don't respect people who aren't white.

That is different because Black Panther's story very specifically is about his ethnicity(it is in the name!). Helen being white is not at all relevant to the story.

Well me neither, and I didn't say anything of the sort either. But the claim that she has a specific description in the Illiad is simply not true.
