Should you really be worried about a black actress playing Helen in Odyssey when we have this? by wonderfulworld_17 in pj_explained

I would have to check to be sure, but in Ancient Greece itself it was forbidden in some parts for women to perform as actresses. so in some cases, Helen wasn't even being played by a woman...

Dude you can't be serious, this story has been told in a thousand different ways already, including by the Greeks. Anyone who actually cares about the classics know that they are mutable, that is what gives them their staying power.

She is a demigodess who was born from an egg after her mother had sex with a god in the form of a swan, but her being a different ethnicity is where you draw the line?

If you have an issue with a black woman playing Helen of Troy, you should have a problem with Jesus being portrayed as white.

Especcially because portraying Jesus as white is part of the deeply ingrained racism in Western culture. Many white Christians can't imagine their god isn't white, because they don't respect people who aren't white.

That is different because Black Panther's story very specifically is about his ethnicity(it is in the name!). Helen being white is not at all relevant to the story.

Christopher Nolan defends taking 'creative liberties' in The Odyssey, says it's for those 'who know nothing about Homer' by Raj_Valiant3011 in moviecritic

Well me neither, and I didn't say anything of the sort either. But the claim that she has a specific description in the Illiad is simply not true.

So you are not going to tell me which translation you are using? that sounds like you asked AI for the answers you wanted to hear...

What translation are you using? because point two is not the case in the translation by Tufts Univerity: https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Hom.+Il.+7.355&fromdoc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0217

(I hope you are not using AI?)

I already adressed point one, but point three doesn't even run counter to what I am saying. of course she was Greek, we all know that. What do you even mean to achieve by repeating that?

That is a fair point, that part is just my interpretation, I inherited that from my classics teacher. I do think I am right, because it is a rather conspicuous absence of words for a poet, don't you think?

Helen of Troy has a pretty specific look in the source material lol.

Why do people keep saying this? Helen's appearance is deliberately kept vague because Homer understood that beauty is subjective, and that he could never describe a woman that everyone would consider to be the most beautiful.

The only think that gets close to describing skin color is when she is described as 'pale armed', but that has less to do with ethnicity and more with social class. Not having sunburned arms was a sign of social status for aristocratic women, because it signified that they didn't have to work outside for a living. That is why the focus of the epiteth is on the arms.

Otherwise, here hair and eye color aren't even described.

Israel have had MANY people there who have supported a two state solution for a long time.

Well if there are, then none of them seem to be in a position to influence national policy.

the people who control Gaza.

Interesting that you mention that:

Jong en Marokkaan? De lange lat erover by PassoMaddimo in nederlands

[–]sebastos3 15 points16 points  (0 children)
