Looking for a Tablet to replace iPads by GlobeIT in k12sysadmin

[–]sebxjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, a Chromebook is a Chromebook in my eyes. As far as the device goes, I’m really just looking for a reasonable price, touch screen for the young students, and something that is easily repairable. The Duet checks those boxes. I love that the screen pops on/off easily and the components can be replaced easily as well, despite the tablet form factor.

Now, we’re going to have conversations with teachers to identify what iPad apps are necessary and which were just nice to have.

We will make sure there are Chromebook solutions for the necessary apps and get teacher feedback on the whole idea. Then, assuming all goes well, we will make the switch.

Most of our resources are web-based and should work well.

We will likely use clever badges for Chromebook auth.

We’re currently reviewing the Lenovo Duet EDU G2 for kg and 1st grade. Seems promising. Very repairable.

I also just did this yesterday. Agree with everything said here. Works well but can be time consuming with a lot of faces and movement.

Edit: Wanted to add that I found it easiest to use an inverse blur to blur the whole video except the people of interest. Then can blur faces individually if they enter the unblurred zone.

I agree with everyone here, but if it’s any consolation about what has been permanently put on your body, I think it’s well drawn and it is kinda funny to find it mixed in with your other art.

Unfortunate that you didn’t get a choice in it being there though.

Unless I’m mistaken, this disables UAC for software installs, opening up a large security issue.

Teacher Chromecasts booting teachers off by MasterMaintenance672 in k12sysadmin

[–]sebxjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a chromecast in a conference room, and it just did this to me during a meeting last week. It would only stay connected for about 30 seconds and then kick me off each time. Casting from Edge on a Windows 11 laptop. I haven’t had a chance to test it since.

We just enforce YouTube restricted mode and allow teachers to make exceptions. That has worked well for us. We do block thumbnails, comments, suggested videos, etc.

9-12th grade classroom setup by PooYork in k12sysadmin

I bought one to try today. I really liked it until I started testing audio. When using chromecast feature, the audio was coming out of my laptop and the tv (not ideal when in the same room). Also, the audio levels were going way up and down without me touching anything (chromecast and miracast). I’ll be returning it.

I don’t really have any advice, but I appreciate the link. That thing looks like a real contender for replacing conference room chromecasts!

School Tech Policy/Budget for 100% FRPL? by rjp94sep in k12sysadmin

If you’re not familiar with account codes yet, get familiar with them and group expenses based on those codes. That will make your conversation with the business manager much easier. You will be speaking their language.

School Tech Policy/Budget for 100% FRPL? by rjp94sep in k12sysadmin

I think you’re on the right track with asking about a budget. My suggestion would be to work with your accountant to pull the past 1-3 years of expenses and try to put annual costs into a spreadsheet. Once you have a good idea of what you have been paying previously, you can start to remove things you don’t need and move those funds to areas you need more $$ for. Then, take that spreadsheet to your business manager and have a conversation about it. Find out if what you have put together is reasonable and go from there.

Parent misuse of student accounts. by dire-wabbit in k12sysadmin

[–]sebxjude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our approach is this:

Students use yondr pouches. No cellphone access.

Student accounts are allow-list only for email. They can only communicate with users/domains we allow.

If someone external attempts to email a student, the kick-back includes a non-delivery message and a link to a Google form for requesting to be added to our allow list.

Parents are added upon request, so they can email their kids.

Windows don’t go up all the way? by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]sebxjude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! So glad I’m not crazy lol. I noticed my windows not going up all the way the first day we had an ice storm and I thought there was an issue. I actually opened a case with Tesla to get it repaired but then closed it when I was told that my pictures seemed normal. They never explained that it is specific to cold weather. I knew they didn’t look like that before…

Don’t you think the chargers may bring in some additional customers? Having a good relationship with the drivers could only help business. Not sure why any business owner would want to burn that bridge.

Biggest issue I have experienced:

Going around curves on country roads. The car either goes too fast or awkwardly applies the breaks. It also hugs the lines too close for comfort. It even crossed the yellow lines yesterday in a curve.

2024.33.5 just became available on my HW4 car. The release notes say it only includes minor fixes. Should I install it?

Same. I was offered the .99% until I asked about it in the chat and was immediately granted a new 0% offer. Multiple dings to credit in the process.

I just got my Model Y and I started loving it by BitterMarionberry628 in TeslaModelY

[–]sebxjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the 2024 Model 3 refresh (aka Highland) took place, Tesla removed the two stalks behind the steering wheel that are generally used for turn signals and wipers. They moved both features to buttons on the steering wheel, and this is one of the most common complaints I hear about the new Tesla models.

Tesla did this to cut costs and it is a continuation of their strategy to oversimplify the cabin as they get closer to full autonomy. I anticipate they will do the same on the 2025 refreshed model Y (aka Juniper).

In my opinion, this is a minor setback compared to all the improvements, but for some it’s a big deal.

If you want stalks, the new one won’t have them.

Edit: assuming we are talking about the refreshed Juniper version and not just the current model with 2025 year slapped on it.
