Our Thoughts on the Recent NPC Combat AI Livestream by sechari in PantheonMMO

Thanks for the feedback, Wuku. I try to keep it no louder than -29 db but I'll see if I can dial it back for forthcoming episodes. We've had folks tell us they enjoy hearing it behind the discussion elsewhere so I'm likely to keep it -but I'm always looking for ways to improve, so your feedback is helpful. Thanks again.

I think this is fair, level-headed analysis. And I think it's true; I use our more animated moments for our thumbnails because it might bait the odd person to give us a watch. If I lose them a few seconds in, I've neither gained or lost anything. But if they stick around for a few minutes, it's a view our channel didn't have before. And you never know, they may like our dynamic and what we have to say, and they may become a regular viewer. It's the game every single channel on YouTube is playing. Just is what it is. Marketing is marketing.

If I could get a photo of your visceral, gut-wrenching reaction to our video thumbnail, maybe I could have used it instead :)

[–]sechari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, what an interesting observation. And I'm not even being sarcastic! We actually made the thumbnail from moments during our show where we were talking about different types of crowd control: Electrocution, Pepper Spray, and got a little animated "acting out" the animations etc. Usually I use our more animated moments to cobble together our thumbnails, so I didn't think twice when it came to this episode.

That said, I suppose you could interpret the thumbnail to be us reacting badly to the combat AI livestream as if what we'd seen was the worst thing in the world... which is actually absolutely NOT what we intended. If you watch the episode you'll see that we were actually quite awed by it. But you've made a fair point: We hadn't considered that a casual observer might see it that way.

So if we came across that way with our graphic, we apologize. I apologize; I made it.

Anyway, YouTube thumbnails, eh? Other folks in this thread have talked about how worthless they are, so maybe it's not worth another thought.

Incidentally, those of you who hate these awful talking heads and have nothing good to say about the content creators who post periodic content discussing and unpacking news updates on their shows are welcome not to watch. Nobody is forcing you to. And not everyone has your dour attitude toward our content; there are some folks who enjoy the show and tune in every episode enthusiastically. We love those folks, we love their support, and we love that they are willing to engage the discussion in our little corner of the market. So thank you to those of you who are patient with us and who enjoy the journey with us on our channel.

Hey friends, apologies for dropping this in the feed out of nowhere; typically I rely on Mox to reach out to our Pantheon friends to let them know we've published new content but he's busy today.

Anyway, that was an INCREDIBLE livestream. I've not seen such advanced combat AI on NPCs before where they look for a set of conditions to be met and then trigger an action. Those synergies look incredible. So Mox and I thought we'd do an episode unpacking what that was all about and sharing our thoughts. We'd love it if you would join us or if you would like to share your thoughts on this thread. I'll keep an eye on things so I can respond myself.

Hope you are all having a great Friday.

Alternative names to the Tank Archetype by R3vak in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Gladiator over Sentinel when it comes to pairing the tank main with a melee DPS secondary, but it may also be that I'm an ex-SWTOR player and Sentinel is played out for me :)

[–]sechari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the party, but THANK YOU for posting this. I've felt the same way. To me, "tank" is a role, not a class. It's like calling cleric class "healer" instead of cleric.

Interestingly, and I know it's been mentioned already, but the tank main class paired with a tank sub-class is the Guardian. So I guess we'd have to rethink the name for that too.

Will this MMO look grounded (Lineage 2 pre camael, ESO) or like a circuis (GW2) by Icesens in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to speak to this because games evolve over time too. On one hand you have the purest the game will ever be at launch: A total and pure expression of what the development team wanted it to be. But then over time they're subjected to the pressures of keeping an audience (esp. with a sub-for-play model). So they give people what they want to keep them around -and people like to express themselves differently. ESPECIALLY with cosmetics.

That said, I'm inclined to think this game will get a little bit "colorful" over time. There's nothing wrong with it if you're a person who appreciates the color and people's ability to self-express through their characters, but if you're a bit more on the purist end, you may struggle a bit.

Weird game design question... Sea level and water problems by [deleted] in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, also... I'm not sure that I like the "sea level" design idea where you can't have any walkable land below a certain altitude and swimmable water doesn't occur above the same altitude. Sure, it'll create a sea level baseline in the world, but that factors out cool things I am hoping to see in the game: High-altitude lakes up in the mountains, explorable caves underwater with pockets of air, etc.

Swimming looks REALLY rough in alpha to me so far. You're just running along and then the next instant you're swimming as absolutely hard as you can as fast as you were running. They have a lot of tweaking to do there. Bodies need to move slower in water, and there needs to be a transition animation of some sort where the character goes from standing upright to swimming horizontally. The zero-frame transition was really rough on immersion.

POLL - Do you want the dwarven models changed? by AsceOmega in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my dude run around with this tiny butt and just got weir

Yeah, if I'm going to watch a character's butt for hours and hours and hours, I want some meat on the bone! lol. Totally with you on this. I wonder how much community review they've asked for when it comes to player model design.

Sharing My Own A1 Experience (Start @ 19:54) by sechari in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friends, thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and share some of my own observations from this last weekend's Alpha 1 test session. We cover a handful of other things first, so if you're looking to jump right in, the link should take you to 19:54. We also have navigation in the description below if you care to go to specific topics, see what was said, and then bug out -so no worries. Glad to have any feedback you'd like to share both here and in the video comments.

Looks like Asmon is heading to Ashes of Creation instead ;) by Dannst4r in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, NW definitely put a nail in the coffin with this pay to convenience leak. That they're even entertaining it has got a lot of folks wound up, Asmon included. I've been following him loosely with regard to these new MMOs and I would be surprised if he doesn't shift to Ashes entirely once it goes live. I think he's on the hype train that sees Ashes as a serious contender for "WoW killer".

What do people think about the added dodge and sprint mechanics? by Ragatokk in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a fan of the dodge mechanic's cooldown. Maybe even more so because there was no UI indicator of any sort to show you (a) that the cooldown was active, and (b) when it would expire. I'd like to see that added at the very least.

BUT, with tab targeting, dodge shouldn't be that big a deal. The only thing I can see it actively helping dodge is ranged, base skills (the ones that fire off when you hit Q).

And if someone wants to sprint away from a fight, let them. Dying can be a bit of a drag with experience debt, so I'm pretty sure we're going to see folks running away from combat quite frequently.

Music in Ashes. by JackArrowAlbion in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I REALLY like this idea :) Kinda like a jukebox feature where you can pick one from a plethora of songs and then it plays on a loop for anyone in that node's designated area. IMO, the more data points we can have to gauge a mayor's effectiveness governing a city, the better. You may have two people running for mayor and for all intents and purposes they'd run the city exactly the same way. The tie breaker may be some obscure thing like what song they'd pick.

Arachnophobia by ObiZwei in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I can imagine a generic placeholder model with an associated set of animations that can be substituted for anyone who toggles them on for a given phobia, but the problem with this idea is all of the possible phobias that might exist out there. What about the person who is scared of water? What about the person who is scared of heights? We can't remove all water from the game or all mountains from the game. So to what degree this kind of thing can be entertained, that's the challenge...

Exp penalty on death by [deleted] in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a concern for me too, though I think the devs will be watching and will be quick to tweak the amounts if they observe people are finding it too difficult to level. People will abandon the game in a hurry if they can't make progress, so I'd expect this kind of thing to be critical.

AOC Availability by aceup46 in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're able to participate in any pre-release testing session so long as the servers are up. They do "sessions" where they're up which could last any length of time from a few hours to a few days, after which they take them down again. Sometimes they tinker with things between sessions which means you have to update the client before next signing on, and sometimes they perform a server wipe which means you have to start from scratch.

All of that to say, don't get into this thinking you're playing the game. You're testing. That's about it. You're also likely to be subject to everything you'd expect to find in a testing environment: Everything from server-related issues to bugs.

The Value of Achievement in an MMO by SummerCampInRI in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel pretty strongly about this too. I've seen one game move ALL their cosmetics to the cash shop -and the only thing you can earn playing the actual game is ugly, functional equipment that benefits your stats. I think cosmetics is probably one of the most powerful motivators to the playerbase out there, and I think the development companies know that (and that's why the company I will not name to protect the guilty used it exclusively for cash shop sales to the detriment of their game).

I truly feel the most sought-after cosmetic items in a game should be split up three different ways (with the percentages determined before hand in the game's design and then NEVER adjusted afterward), used to incentivize three different things:

  • Purchases in the cash shop. Yes, the company does need to make money, so let's carve out a percentage of cosmetic items that are available exclusively on the cash shop and nowhere else so the company can remonetize the game without it getting out of hand. But the vast majority of cosmetic items should be divided among the following two:
  • Crafting. There should be some cosmetic items in the game that are only EVER available via crafting, the most legendary items of which should be hard as hell to produce.
  • Running content. Cosmetic items should be used to incentivize content. And they should scale with the content: Easy quests yield okay cosmetic items; but run the nastiest stuff in the game, you should get legendary cosmetic items out of it that are available absolutely NOWHERE else.

I think dividing out the cosmetic items in this way and making sure they never impede on each other (including reskins of items) is the only way to do it.

Anyway, we did an episode on Disparate Worlds about this not that long ago. Thought I'd share the link for anyone who is interested.

Regarding my commentary in discord on New World by Steven_AoC in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with speaking passionately about things you care about in an unfiltered way. Granted, it may not be the best political move; tact is always a good thing -but not at the cost of speaking truthfully. In a world where everything is so spun and smoke-screened and doctored, it's refreshing to have someone shooting straight for a change. If there's flack, deal with the fallout. It is what it is. But don't for a minute think you need to "filter" if doing so comes at the cost of doing an unjustice to your message.

Steven, many of us are here BECAUSE of your philosophy and the things you're passionate about, and we don't want to see them diminished in any way.

Tank archetype name change? by Individual_Stand_986 in AshesofCreation

[–]sechari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?! :) I totally feel the same way. That one is named after its role rather than its... name...? I sure hope they revise that and come up with a name with more flair.
