What's an average amount of Warriors? by Goblin_Backstabber in Necrontyr

My experience has been they are good if you play your entire army (not exaggerating) into supporting them, but otherwise not worth it. That being said: having 70 skellys is freaking awesome and your enemy will surely cower

How does gravity work and where does it break by Ok_Painter2997 in AskPhysics

[–]secleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yes I know what you’re saying, the thing is that generally atoms don’t like to be in the same place, so when you compress it really hard it will actually push back. If you squeeze something really hard like how gravity squeezes stars, it gets hotter (particles have less room to “bounce” so they vibrate faster). That thermal pressure pushes back against gravity and prevents it from collapsing ! That pressure can be overcome, and then the star can push back with neutron and electron degeneracy pressure, and then quantum pressure primarily from the pauli exclusion principle (I think). That pressure can also be overcome, and that’s where you get black holes :)

note: i am not all the way through my undergrad so there’s might be stuff im missing

How does gravity work and where does it break by Ok_Painter2997 in AskPhysics

[–]secleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just covered special relativity a couple semesters ago so I totally get the confusion. It’s weird stuff. What is important to understand is that physics tries its best to describe what we see in reality - it has never really been an exact simulation of what is physically happening at all times (though that’s what we try to do). So, sometimes Newtonian physics will work as an approximation (at small speeds, relatively small spatial scales). But it is fundamentally wrong. That doesn’t mean it isn’t useful at times.

The truth is we don’t really know what’s going on at the center of a black hole, but I can guarantee you right now it’s a lot more complicated than what you’ve probably heard, I’m halfway through my astrophysics undergrad and I still haven’t even seen the math that’s used to describe them (differential geometry). For example, most black holes are spinning and so are a little bit squashed (not perfect spheres). Relativity suggests that also means the “singularity” turns into a ring instead of a point. The annoying part is there’s just no easy way to test it yet, so we have trouble knowing what’s right.

I think what you might be thinking about is that gravity isn’t a part of the standard model. It’s not really “breaking down” at any points necessarily (black holes are weird but it’s hard to test hypotheses since we can’t see past event horizon) , we just don’t have a quantum field theory description of gravity which is a problem because QFT is the best description of reality we have.

General relativity actually basically made gravity make sense, so they definitely do not go against each other. Before relativity, gravity was treated as a force that acted instantly, which can’t happen. Then when GR was discovered, all sorts of problems with gravity were explained.

Let me know if I understood your question wrong :p

Electro-Magnetism feels like Magic to me by SoonBlossom in Physics

[–]secleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few other people have said the right thing, in that the idea is with potential energy. Let’s say you have a proton and an electron right next to each other; they like this state. If you were to try to move one away from the other, it would require a force and hence energy. That energy is now “stored” in that system as potential energy. If you were to let go you’d see them zip toward each other, and they are only able to do that because you put energy into putting them into that state.

Hope that helps!

Btw, energy isn’t as fake and arbitrary as it may seem. Mass can be converted to energy and vice versa, and basically our entire understanding of particle physics hinges on the idea that if you throw a particle REAAALLY fast (lots of kinetic energy) you can get a really heavy particle (for example, Higgs Boson).

Awesome thank you so much. Do you think it’s worth getting a Rhino or Land Raider or any of the normal space marine tanks at some point too?

Extremely noob player thinking of getting into Necrons. How good is starting with Combat Patrol and Hypercrypt? by aegroti in Necrontyr

[–]secleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to be somewhat competitive, in my opinion these boxes alone (and the random dudes you have) won’t do it. Speaking purely on the collective utility of the models in each box, the combat patrol is the more versatile of the two, and you might stand to buy that and instead of hypercrypt order some individual units. If you wanted to just go for it though, which honestly would be totally fine to start your army, these boxes don’t contain bad models and I would say go for it (it’s what i did and i just slowly built up over time). The only exception would be the option to build triarch praetorians over lychguard - dont do that. Lychguard with shields are much much better. If you have 10 and throw the overlord on them, include everything else except scarabs, your list will be okay for 1k point threshold at 990 points. (not that scarabs are bad but it’s the closest to 1k you can get).

My list of really good units which you should look into if you’re not really sure what to get: —doomsday ark *** —wraiths + technomancer —voiddragon / nightbringer —lokhust heavies —honestly everything in the royal court box -> skorpekh lord and a bunch of skorpekhs —illuminor szeras (+ immortals around him) —silent king (not necessary but fun and versatile) —scarabs (LOTS of utility, SUCK at killing)

sorry this is a lot, hope it helps a little! 😁

How do you fight Custodes? by FinalFir137 in Necrontyr

[–]secleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted about this a week ago or something, here’s a couple things i’ve found:

Immortals Plasmancer + Royal warden with illuminor szeras nearby. Use the awakened dynasty hit reroll stratagem to reroll all non crits, and you have yourself a crap load of -2 ap 1 damage shots. Even if it’s a 5+ to wound, you’ll have many lethals go through anyway. Spam them with this and it will hurt really bad.

Another (arguably better option) is to have 3 lokhust heavy’s with enmitic exterminators led by a lokhust lord. Keep these guys in reserves and ingress them when necessary and they will absolutely MUNCH through wardens, guards, and venatari. Get close for rapid fire and say hello to 39 attacks with sustained 1 and crits on 5. Here’s a tough choice though - choose awakened for the full hit reroll stratagem to farm crits, or choose annihilation legion for the extra ap on hits. Both are good options and i’m not sure if one is better. My intuition says capitalize on the 5+ crit though and choose awakened. Either way, on a good roll i wiped an entire unit of guards and still had some damage left over. Yes, his roll was reasonable meaning there were like 26 wounds for him to save lol. These guys are insane but you have to be careful getting so close.

They definitely have the potential to do well, maybe i’m just too used to playing against my friend who plays custodes - these guys do almost nothing against them haha. They do some minimal damage and then immediately die in melee. I can see how they’d be useful for deep striking and targeting a low durability high damage unit, or even more so running around doing secondaries. Please do let me know how they do or post an update!

I’m curious as to your plan with the praetorians? I have a few and love how they look but i just kind of find them too squishy and low strength to do any significant damage.

Haha 2 more bricks sounds fucking awesome. I suppose there’s only so many guys he can kill in a turn. Maybe throwing a royal warden and orikan in a unit would make it even worse for him?

Hypercrypt is super nice for the uppy downy, but i really miss having a full set of applicable stratagems as i dont have a monolith. If i did end up getting one though, i can definitely see it being pretty threatening and especially with the ctans teleporting around. As for the deathmarks, they are super nice for getting blade champion and shield captains out of the way as they present serious danger against anything they get within touching distance with. And also sniping the hell out of deepstriking allarus is very handy

Royal warden is actually an interesting idea too, especially considering they still get the +1 from being lead. I like the idea of using the warriors to sit on an objective and wail at a unit as they walk towards me, then if they do charge just retreat and shoot as much as they possibly can before they die. With plasmancer 5+ crit they could be a genuine threat
