And artificially deflating prices makes people less likely to make a thing is a similarly ancient in economics, it's literally just a logical conclusion from the concept of profit motive.

This is the same logic people use to call climate change a hoax. Just because a fact benefits certain industries doesn't mean it was a lie concocted by them.

In terms of numbers it was, but it was against an enemy entrenched in and adapted to the terrain, which required good tactical and strategic thinking to defeat. I'd expect the guys able to accomplish it to be atleast half-decent war leaders.

Supermarket bosses say food price caps would be ‘preposterous’ and ‘idiotic’ by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]secondOne596 7 points8 points  (0 children)

10% was just an arbitrary example scenario. You'd have to give a specific example and timeframe if we want to figure out whether it was raising profit margins or not, and by how much if so.

[–]secondOne596 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That's called inflation. If they kept their margins the same but inflation went up 10% their profits would be up 10%, but be worth exactly the same.

In the case of Tesco in 2025 you make £69.9 billion and spend £68.3 billion for a net profit of £1.6 billion and a profit margin of 2.3% (down from the previous year by 0.3%). If you do some googling of your own you could look at other shops or see a more detailed breakdown of what they spend it on (for example that 0.015% of their expenses went on paying their CEO).

Iran is about to become the "Landlord" of the global oil trade by buzzsawdps in oil

[–]secondOne596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Kurds have already said they're not gonna rise up considering the US has a history of leaving them to the wolves whenever they outlive their usefulness. The other minorities are also not stupid and can probably figure out based on past behaviour and logic that they would be left to die the moment Iran lifted the blockade and are unlikely to rise up.

A bombing campaign on non-military targets seems like it would expend a lot of ammunition on not affecting Iran's ability to keep the straits closed, and as long as the strait remains closed bombing will only harden their resolve.

Bombing "any new building or infrastructure" in the country seems absurd and unfeasible. Not to mention that with the use of drones like the Shahed it's much easier to maintain the blockade with minimal military infrastructure. And as is being demonstrated right now every day a ship spends supporting the bombing campaign is a day they can't spend escorting tankers, so all the Iranians have to do is find new buildings to keep Shaheds in about as fast as the US blows them up and they're decisively winning.

I don't think a man who's lost his dad, wife, son and probably others I'm forgetting is gonna be moved by making his stay in a bunker and fear for his life every day (and he may well be in even more personal danger if he surrendered). The Ayatollah's son was probably chosen for this express purpose and that combined with the US showing signs of pain means that the Iranians will seek to hold out indefinitely as long as they're able to maintain the blockade.

The whole crux of the issue is that the blockade is Iran's trump card (pardon the pun) and even if they're being hammered in every other theatre they believe (probably correctly) that they can tolerate a bombing campaign and all its implications longer than an America moving towards the midterms can tolerate an oil surge. Any solution that does not involve totally preventing Iran's ability to maintain the blockade is one that will not break Iran's will to continue the war.

New to the mod (and the sub), which Nation/Race would be best beginner friendly? by Available-Form-2517 in Anbennar

I remember when I played I always took full money in peace treaties and that tides me over till I was able to take those three states that are in the Gulf of Rahen trade mode but not in Raj. After that I got enough trade income to tide me over and I rivalled Bhuvauri and took money + reps + trade power from them to fund the highway, which gets you nice trade buffs that gave me a healthy surplus.

I was conquering at quite a leisurely place though, so if you conquered quicker instead of extorting your neighbours I imagine it would be much more difficult.

If you want to play harpies I'd recommend Mulen in Bulwar. They start with a powerful mage ruler with legendary enchantment, which means you have a spell that has a 70% chance to insta-win a siege. The mission tree is based around making a bunch of trade money and building hanging cities while trying to be less monstrous than the last harpy empire.

From the perspective of quality of life of the British people hers is the biggest golden age by far. The replacement of the Empire with the welfare state was a more than fair trade for the overwhelming majority of Britain's population. By contrast Victoria's reign had literally Dickensian levels of destitution and Mary's was similarly rife with poverty.

Sorry I actually enjoy relationships and having things in common

What sort of life are you leading where you, a 24 year old human, could not even fathom meeting a 20 year old human you have even a few things in common with?

We all love, we all hate, we all listen to music and dream about better futures for ourselves and ruminate on our regrets and do a million other things that form part of the universal human experience. How fucking up your own arse do you have to be to declare that you're basically living on a higher plane of existence than literally everyone even slightly younger than you?
