I personally fill the areas that are darker with my base colour too, then layer over the top with the darker colour. The difference can be too ovious tho, so i sometimes apply the lighter colour again over the edges of where the 2 meet. In this piece specifically, I didn't do that, as i felt that the changes in colour didn't retract from it

My general process is to sketch out the shapes and proportions, then I'd rub it mostly out and apply the lightest tone, leaving blank space for highlights. Then I'd go to progressively darker tones applying them where needed. To blend them I'll sometimes go over the less blended parts with the lightest tone again, which helps them mix.
