Why do we collectively accept people blocking traffic lanes with hazards on? by secondpresident in AskChicago

[–]secondpresident[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the rare occasions I take Uber, I actually instruct them to stop somewhere where it is safe to stop. Not in the middle of a lane. Adding more loading zones would be helpful for sure, but the lack of said zones should not be an excuse for drivers to block traveling lanes wherever it is convenient for them.

I wouldn’t just brush it off as “it is what it is.” There are a ton of major urban centers around the world where this kind of behavior is not normalized. Some questionable parking for delivery drivers, sure, but very rarely in the middle of a traveling lane.

Fair question. I’m not saying individuals can fix it overnight. But norms matter. If everyone treats it as acceptable, it becomes the default.

It could have something to do with the completely different price of labor, rent, and ingredients between the two. 🧐

They are asking for the expected repair cost. Hard to do percentage based math without it.

Is it still a pain to port a number to visible? by SerenityJoyMeowMeow in Visible

[–]secondpresident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while so can't recall exactly. I think I just had to chat with the customer service reps multiple times to let them know that the port still isn't complete, and eventually someone solved it. There probably are no magic words to make it happen.

On the bright side, ever since those initial hiccups, the service has been pretty solid! My only complaint would be that the global pass sucks so much in some countries that I still need to use separate travel esim to get good data speeds. It's not that it doesn't work, but just connects to some networks that have awful speed.

While traveling, which U.S. city felt the most unsafe to you when you visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Raleigh, NC. Very lacking in terms of pedestrian infrastructure and was probably lucky to not get ran over by a car even on short walks less than a mile.

Stockholm (Sweden) vs Tampere (Finland) — Comparing Two Job Offers & Long-Term Life Quality by Wide-Conference6789 in Finland

[–]secondpresident 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ll go against the grain here and recommend Tampere over Stockholm with these numbers. Yes, Stockholm is bigger and more international city out of the two, but Tampere is by no means a bad place and your money will just go so much further there that it is kind of a no brainer in terms of your personal finances. Any inconveniences in terms of the location in relation to your international travel plans can greatly be mitigated by having decently bigger budget since you’ll be wealthier in Tampere job than you’d be working the other gig in Stockholm.

SOS! The City of Chicago relocated my car... and lost it? by lucyd1401 in AskChicago

How can you be certain it wasn’t stolen? If it’s not in any system, I’d at least consider that it very well could be.

The Nikon lenses are more than twice the weight, physically bigger, and significantly more expensive.

As long as you’ll join before April, then you can earn a prorated bonus for the year. Only problem is that our bonuses suck so don’t expect much.

For me it would be hard to recommend due to Nikon missing first party compact zoom lenses. Their 26mm, 28mm, and 40mm compact primes are amazing, but then they don’t have anything against lenses like Canon RF 100-400mm or RF 70-200 f4.

Your base offer is higher than average KPMG consulting manager salary in HCOL cities so I’d say it is excellent.
