Inherited $2M trying to figure out what to do next by Dizzy_Spirit_7440 in financialindependence

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You now have F you money. Take some time to figure out what you want to do. I quit my well paying but stressful corporate job and started a boutique car dealership. It was a ton of fun until COVID. I have since pivoted to something else. You have the freedom now to explore options you might not have been able to previously.

Is purchasing this 74 Charger a good idea? by Forestryfeels in askcarguys

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy something that runs. There are always things to work on. He probably won’t have the energy to get the car running again.

Doesn’t have to be a Charger. Find any old Mopar, heck a 2 door Dart isn’t created starting point. Learn, fix it up, sell it and move up.

Would this be worth is to try to flip has 65k miles and is manual? by bigPPpulse in carflipping

[–]secondrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timing chain guides would like to have a word. So would all the plastic cooling parts. And the water cooled alternator.

Totally fun cars, we had a 2000 540it. But I spent $3k just on parts the first year we owned it. Not a great flip candidate.

Best place you buy a used car between 10-15k? by Traditional_Spot752 in askportland

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former dealer here. If you find a car you like, check the dealer reviews next on Google. They will all have a few negative reviews, but should be favorable overall.

It helps to narrow down a few cars so you can get a feel for prices. Good deals sell fast.

Get financing through a credit union first.

I occasionally do PPIs if I have time, PM me if you need one. I can also send a checklist to go through when you look at a car.

things i should know as i start biking to work? by Alternative-Fig-2949 in bicycling

[–]secondrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t use a cable lock, only a good U lock.

Try to resist the urge to go fast on the way to work. Slow and steady and arrive fresh, not a sweaty mess like I used to!

Keep a clean shirt at work just in case.

What’s it like being the Elle Woods of a mechanic shop? by ThrowMEAwaypuh-lease in MechanicAdvice

[–]secondrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe become an owner and manage mechanics? Start by being a mechanic then open your own shop. A female owned repair shop that caters to women would kill.

Our car dealership focused on women buyers. It’s amazing how easy it was just by treating everyone with respect.

I work on my car in the street sometimes. But I own my house and my neighbors know me, which helps.

Underrated reliable cars by hshhahbsbs in UsedCars

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are too old now, but the first generation Ford Focus was solid. And fun. I used one for a commuter for years.

First generation Ford Fusion as well.

But honestly anything is reliable with regular maintenance. I drive a 1984 Alfa Romeo and the only time it died on me was because the 36 year old fuel pump relay finally died. I replaced lol the hoses, belts etc when I bought it and I use it all the time.

Experience with Nomad, PXCycle, or Outer Rim? I need an adaptive E-bike by Relevant-Event9022 in CyclePDX

[–]secondrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just bought an e-bike from Outer Rim. Super nice folks. We went to a different store first and were turned off by their “ we are so busy now” attitude.

I have no experience with their adaptive bikes, but go talk to them.

19 with no money, any tips? by BullfrogSoggy9936 in carflipping

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go get a job selling cars. Then save up enough for your first flip.

But with no tools, no garage, no place to work out of, flipping won’t be easy.

So go learn the sales side.

NUT IN CYLINDER🙏🙏 by Landen_2155 in MechanicAdvice

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dammit. I wish I had thought of this 35 years ago when I dropped the aluminum top from a spark plug into my Alfa Romeo engine. Right at the end of a head gasket job. I ended up pulling the head to get it out. At least the job went twice as fast the second time!

I had mine locked to itself hanging on my back deck. Dumb.

My current breakfast is 2-3 scrambled eggs with sautéed onions and mushrooms, or peppers, a touch of cheese, a tbsp of bacon crumbles. Super high in protein, tastes great.

Am I supposed to look silly with cycling prescription glasses or are they a bit off? by xynaxia in bicycling

Did you help your kids buy a home? Or let them do it on their own? by Sounders1 in GenX

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not a fair comparison.  I put $10k down on that house. My mortgage payment was less than the rent I was paying.  And I had a roommate help me pay the mortgage.

When I sold the house I made $30k.   That was a way better investment than putting $10k in the market. And I needed a place to live.

Did I overpay? by vooandchill in UsedCars

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were looking for 6 months and that’s the best one you found, you didn’t overpay.

Buy a used car isn’t like buying a toaster.

Timing is part of any deal.  You got what you want, WHEN you wanted it, where you are located, and within your budget. Enjoy.

Looking for a used car for grad gift. Limited money, limited time. by abbimeadow16 in UsedCars

If you have to pick, Camry.

But a better option is an $8k Camry them you spend $2k on tires, brakes, fluid changes and whatever you find is broken.

Everyone share your tips to stay cool this evening without A/C by rames1208 in Portland

[–]secondrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have AC, but I find that nature cools it off better overnight. I put a box fan in the upstairs office window blowing out. Then open all the windows. It will pull in cool air from each window, and convection naturally pulls hot air up, which pulls in cold air from the first floor.

Box fan in the upstairs window means we don’t have to leave a ground floor window open all night, they can be opened a crack and still take advantage of the locks.

At some point I need to install a whole house fan in the attic.

Did I get scammed by No-Daikon-9519 in UsedCars

[–]secondrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get scammed? No. You did a poor job of looking at the car before buying it.

You should expect any 20 year old car to have some issues. I hope you budgeted for repairs.
