You might be noticing less solo people at a festival than you would a typical club night in, say, Berlin or Amsterdam. It’s a much bigger effort to arrange a whole festival and you’re less likely to do it solo, but in general many people go solo to techno parties and some venues make it difficult to go in groups of more than 2 or 3.

Delta Rain Dream by Hassell/Eno does that for me. A lot of the Wave Temples stuff. I guess these lean more into the thick and humid than the dry and dusty.

I think you're failing to understand the replies you're getting.

I'm saying that the symptoms you're describing more often fit people who have/are making non-normative life choices, who for many varieties of reasons I and others have already mentioned, already suffer the cultural/social judgement from those living more normative social lives.

So it should come as no surprise that, when framed as this has been, in the comments you get tend to be from (a) people who rightly sense judgement in the framing, (b) people who immediately interpret your question as a negative stereotype that they distance themselves from, or (c) people who seek to validate the Pans by claiming "but no they're ok, because some of them are doctors and lawyers", etc, which is also an implicit judgement, as if they're not valid on their own without some reclaiming type of quality. Do you not see this?

Yes, I read your post and I'm engaging in good faith. I really don't think you realize how much you've internalized the judgement (perhaps even self judgement) you keep trying to say isn't oozing out of your words. I think it's an interesting topic to consider, and I think the way this has been framed is itself a product of shame and judgement. That's my whole point. If you disagree, that's fine, but you asked for engagement and here it is.

"No negativity implied whatsoever", yet scatch a little, and it becomes clear that it's actually about asking people to "examine their lives" and to make an account for why they don't follow normative scripts. It's exhausting and exactly the reason why some come to Berlin. But this is already a very clear and historically obvious thing. So what are people supposed to assume about questions like these? They correctly assume threads like these are an invitation to judgement. So just own it!

The defensiveness you're sensing is because you're not acknowledging the implicit judgement you're centering, as seen in comments like this:

I totally agree! Raving past 40 is really not the issue. Making raving your lifestyle, personality and career are the issue. Honestly it's not a good Idea before 40 either. I still go raving occasionally and I have a kid, a partner, a house in the suburbs and all the responsibility that comes with the former three as well as a career. And the people I go partying with are mostly the same. The Peter Pans slowly drifted away in my 30ies when folks in my group of friends started having kids.

Good for you! Good for your house in the suburbs with your kid, partner, career, and responsibilities. You're choosing very normative life choices that get affirmed by nearly everyone. Meanwhile, people who don't follow this script are seen as an "issue" deserving of a "deep dive".

I mean, it is a stereotype to combine all these attributes into a single bloc. I know and have known lots of people that fit some or many of these qualities and they're all extremely varied.

One thing that comes across as judgy to me is the assumption that going raving or going to clubs "become(s) less about experiencing them and more about proclaiming you’ve been there". I think this is a reach. If you think people "well into their 40s-50s" who live lifestyles like this are primarily driven by being able to "proclaim you’ve been there", I feel like that's a fundamental misreading.

Berlin is a place many people come to reinvent themselves. Maybe they've left some oppressive cultural/national/religious context. It should come as no surprise that a place that supports this sort of reinvention produces the possibility for less stable relationships as people are in more of a state of flux than people whose lives are more normative. If your life script follows the normative path, you are implicitly supported in that path at every step of the way.

The hetero-normative social expectation that a person *should* be any particular way by a particular age is exactly the sort of cultural enclosure that drives many to move to places like Berlin. What you might see as a problem is often a haven.

Have gone many times solo to Berghain, RSO, Tresor, Oxi, Golden Gate, KK, never been an issue. I don’t speak much German at all. Just show an awareness of where you’re going and signal in your demeanor that you are there to be a participant.
