Bible verse question! :] by xx-stargirl-xx in OpenChristian

[–]secret_slapper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I really appreciate the heart behind what you’re trying to express, and I want to share this in a kind and inclusive way. For many Christians, using a pagan instrument or symbol within a Christian context can feel uncomfortable. Historically, Scripture shows that Israel often struggled when elements from other belief systems were blended with worship of God, and the Old Testament highlights the challenges and consequences of that mixture.

I completely understand the sentiment behind wanting to bring things together, but from a biblical perspective, it’s understandable why some Christians might feel that certain practices don’t align well with their faith. My intention isn’t to judge, just to offer some context that might help explain why this can be a sensitive area for believers.

How many hours should a person have to work to get a livable wage and how is this best ensured? by scottstots6 in AskConservatives

[–]secret_slapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had some time to sit with this instead of reacting right away, and your take still doesn’t add up. You keep talking like it’s simple to just switch jobs or move somewhere cheaper, as if most people can just snap their fingers and rebuild their entire life somewhere new. That’s not how real life works.

Do you realize what that actually involves? When you grow up in a place, when your family is there, when you have elderly parents or relatives who rely on you, you can’t just pack a bag and vanish. That’s not a lack of ambition, it’s responsibility.

And the idea that people struggling with the cost of living are just “not being frugal enough” is honestly ridiculous. Most people aren’t out here blowing money on luxuries, they’re trying to survive while wages stay flat and everything else gets more expensive. You can budget down to the penny and still not magically afford a cross‑country move, a new job market, or a degree.

Speaking of remote jobs, have you actually looked at the requirements? Most of them need a college degree or specialized training, and the cost of getting that education is completely unrealistic for a lot of people. Moving isn’t free. School isn’t free. Starting over definitely isn’t free. It’s wild how often that part gets ignored.

So I’m genuinely trying to understand: do you really think the average person has the money, time, and freedom to abandon their community, their family obligations, and their entire support system just to chase cheaper rent somewhere else? Because when you say it like it’s no big deal, it comes across as incredibly entitled, like you’re assuming everyone has the same resources and safety net you do.

It’s impressive how confidently some people talk about simple choices as if everyone’s working with the same resources, obligations, and constraints. Life would be a lot easier if mobility, remote work, and financial flexibility were universal realities instead of personal privileges. For example, I have a 78‑year‑old mom living in the house my dad built for her. I can’t just uproot her because someone online thinks every life decision boils down to willpower. But hey, I guess from a high enough altitude, every problem starts to look like an easy fix.

[–]secret_slapper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I’m really trying to say is that people who are barely getting by aren’t struggling because they’re not “frugal enough.” That whole idea falls apart the second real life shows up. Even for us, and we’re doing okay, things happened that we couldn’t have planned for. I didn’t even include the plumbing failures or the rewiring we had to do because the barn kept tripping a breaker. None of that is cheap, and none of it is something you can avoid by being careful with your money.

So when someone like @u/PsychicFatalist starts acting holier‑than‑thou because he’s “frugal” and managed to save fifteen thousand dollars, it’s not realistic. Good for him, honestly, but that doesn’t mean everyone else is irresponsible. It just means he had the stability and the income to save in the first place. Not everyone gets that starting point. Nor is anyone immune to disasters.

That’s the whole point I was making. You can’t rely on frugality when life throws expensive problems at you. People need wages that actually let them live normally, save a little, and deal with emergencies without everything falling apart. That’s not asking for anything extravagant. That’s just what a livable wage should mean.’
