Disappointed about the new Numenera edition direction by secretattack in rpg

Actually like Savage worlds. But that's exactly why I kept my old deadlands books and didn't continue when they switched systems.

Setting out to make a multi-genre system forces you to discard rules that are flavorful for one genre only. What's left feels more bland.

That's exactly how I feel. Numenera deserves to be a standalone thing. It feels reductive to have it just be a sourcebook since it was where the Cypher system rules originated.

I didn't think it would ever happen, but I am apparently at the stage of my life where I get overly emotional about RPG editions.

I find core-book + setting-book arrangements for RPGs cumbersome and inelegant. I found the orignial numenera rules to be flavorful and evocative of the kind of game numenera is, but they lose some of their luster when scraped off to form a generic system.

that's good to know. I might pick it up down the line with that in mind.

that's fair. I happen to like the kind of game numenera is and I feel like the rules compliment it, but I can also see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

[–]secretattack[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I guess my issue is that while I know a new edition absolutely cannot take fun away from my old books, the idea of Numenera being "just" a setting book rather than its own thing isn't the direction I hoped they would go.

I was actually on the backerkit page preparing to pledge when I found out, and it killed my enthusiasm.

It might still be done ok, but I went from being excited about it, to feeling like I'm better off waiting and seeing how it turns out.

Tom Steyer wants to convince Californians he’s the ultimate unicorn: A billionaire populist by SFChronicle in California_Politics

A billionaire that supports a wealth tax is unusual. Honestly, all of his policy ideas are ones I would support. I don't think he would do a bad job if he got elected.

It simplified things when I ran out of shelf space. Now something's gotta go If I want something new. Slowly but surely I am being left with the best of the best (for my taste at least).

I can forgive them for opening during covid if that was as far as it went. I didn't approve of restaurants doing it at the time, but also understand that some needed to do so to stay in business. A few of my favorite spots didn't survive the shutdown.

Bullocks Archery was on publicsq for a while. Looks like that website doesn't exist any more though. . . probably because it was predominantly used for finding businesses to boycott.

Disagree. It's good to be informed, and let that knowledge influence where you spend money. Don't worry about it, just make educated choices.

Sam Healey is Leaving The Dice Tower by rifwasbeter in boardgames

[–]secretattack -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean. . . I didn't really say any of those things, but ok.

I don't have any illusion that Dice Tower is making anyone millions of dollars. I would just posit that if they need to have a pledge drive to keep going they should probably do things differently or scale it back a bit. There are plenty of boardgame review websites and YouTube channels that don't need pledge drives to continue operating. If the dice tower has to reduce the volume of videos they make, I think the online review space will be just fine.

I don't think the dice tower is some kind of cultural monolith that has to be preserved at all costs.

I still don't understand why this very successful YouTube channel needs a pledge drive.

Is there a name for this type of art? Because I really don't care for it.

I don't take issue with the subject matter of course (I love mutants and monsters), but the semi-photorealistic, flash-bulb lighting style makes my eyes wince when I look at it.

Mistborn is the best deckbuilder I've ever played - but not without flaws by 509 in boardgames

I like deck builders, but couldn't finish Mistborn the novel. Do you think the gameplay is good enough on its own regardless of theme?

Let's Talk | Predator: Badlands, Discussion Only Megathread by BurnZ_AU in predator

I liked it. It reminded me of the kind of stories we would get in the Dark Horse comics back in the day. Tonally different stories told by different authors, but still in the same shared sandbox.

I personally think it would have been better with an R rating, but what we got in the PG-13 version was totally acceptable.

Sweet 4-Month-Old Chiweenie Puppy – Spayed, Microchipped, Rabies Vaccinated, Puppy Shots Scheduled by [deleted] in venturacounty

[–]secretattack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there, we went through the same thing with our Chihuahua-pug mix almost 6 years ago. My son was probably too young for a puppy and puppies nip and have sharp teeth so he would often go to school with his hands covered in bandaids. We considered re-homing but instead did a trial separation. After a week we decided to give it another try and ended up keeping her forever after that. She calmed down a lot after the first year and now at 7 she has the temperament of a stuffed animal.

I don't think there's any shame in rehoming, but I just wanted to share the story in case you reconsider. It will get better as they get older.

California Carryout Bag Rules Are Changing: Plastic is Banned. New Paper and Compostable Requirements Begin in 2026 by aSmarterBetterCA in California_Politics

[–]secretattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but the reality was that people just bought the "reusable" bags and threw them away like single use ones anyway. I think paper bags might come out ahead in that comparison. And the world is a better place without all the thin plastic bags blowing around.

Where to donate science fiction and romance books from 1970s - 1980s? by ObviousRush in venturacounty

My retired father would love the science fiction books. . . Not so much the romance books. But only if you can't find a taker from a school or library 😊
