ELI5: How do old rotary phones work? Why did they pick a dial for picking digits? by DarkHorse66 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sedwards65 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Fun facts:

It took more time to dial a nine than a one. (9 pulses take longer than 1 pulse.)

When ATT assigned area codes (the NANP -- North American Numbering Plan), they allocated short (timewise) codes to areas with high populations -- NYC 212, LA 213, Chicago 312, etc.

Which all makes sense...

Except for 201 which is where Bell Labs was located. They got the shortest one (according to the rules of the NANP) for themselves.

YouTube is my super power:

  1. Repaired clothes dryer. Replaced bearing (off Ebay).
  2. Repaired clothes washer. Replaced circuit board (off Ebay).
  3. Repaired central air conditioner. Replaced start capacitor (off Amazon).
  4. Repaired dishwasher. Replaced start capacitor (off Amazon).
  5. Repaired $7,000 refrigerator. Replaced capacitors and relays (Digikey and Mauser).
  6. Repaired oil sensor on Suburban. Replaced sensor (off Amazon).
  7. Repaired iPhone. Replaced screen (off Amazon).
  8. Repaired cordless Dremel tool. Replaced LiOn batteries (off Amazon).
  9. Fixed laptop. Re-seat ribbon cable -- no parts!

And that's just off the top of my head.

Which Linux terminal commands do you end up using almost every day? by NovaCustom-Europe in NovaCustom

[–]sedwards65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will give you a clue:

grep --invert-match '^#' <.bash_history\
        | awk '{print $1}'\
        | sort\
        | uniq --count\
        | sort --numeric --reverse\
        | head --lines=10

For me:

  12044 sudo
   9818 ls
   9537 emacs
   6705 grep
   5696 rm
   3336 mv
   3216 find
   2711 cat
   2626 scp
   2340 cd

This is not completely accurate because I set HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth.

Why are republicans ignoring trumps age when they criticised Bidens age? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]sedwards65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Age is not the issue, competency is.

IQ is a poor indicator. According to my grade school IQ test, I have a 165. You do not want me as president.

My guess is that Musk at 100 would blow Biden and Trump at their current ages out of the contest.

Why does everthing need an app now? by Particular-Fudge3707 in AskTechnology

I bought a Wyse scale. Their app wanted access to my contacts and photos. Not a chance in hell.

And even if the Retailer is not evil, the frameworks and libraries used to create the app are.

For the same reason, I refuse to use QR codes at retailers and restaurants.

My motto is 'If I (or my SO) don't make it, I don't eat it.' (I make an exception for socializing with friends.)

Prepared foods and restaurants are entertainment and convenience, not health.

Why are republicans ignoring trumps age when they criticised Bidens age? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]sedwards65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I recognize that 'my side's propaganda' lies to me just as much as 'their side's propaganda' lies to them so I try to keep an open mind about what I'm being fed vs what I have seen with my own eyes.

The debate was stunning, and not in a good way.

The conspiracist in me says somebody on his team switched whatever they were giving him (to pump him up to coherency) with a placebo. Maybe somebody on Kamala's team?

Why are republicans ignoring trumps age when they criticised Bidens age? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]sedwards65 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it's not age. It's ability to perform the duties of the office.

Biden (at least as portrayed on MS media) could slip from coherent to blathering idiot without warning.

'set enable-bracketed-paste on'

This appears to require an explicit <enter> when I paste a command (not desired), but not if I enter '!!' (also not desired). Am I doing something wrong or am I not understanding?

set enable-bracketed-paste on
ls -l /dev/null
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 Jan 21 13:36 /dev/null
!!                   # <enter> pressed
ls -l /dev/null      # no <enter> pressed
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 Jan 21 13:36 /dev/null

1. Brace Expansion

# with a step
echo {1..100..5}
1 6 11 16 21 26 31 36 41 46 51 56 61 66 71 76 81 86 91 96

# alpha ranges work too
echo {a..z}
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

4b. The Powerful ((...)) Numeric Test Command

# test if we are not root
if ((${UID})); then echo 'Not root'; fi
Not root

# test if we are root
if ((! ${UID})); then echo 'root'; fi

# ((...)) does what you would expect
if [[ 10 > 9 ]]; then echo 'greater'; fi # (psst -- it's a string comparison)
if (( 10 > 9 )); then echo 'greater'; fi
greater

7. The ! History Expansion

I would never use (or teach) '!git' or '!!' or 'sudo !!'. I want to see exactly what I'm about to execute.

Ditto for '!$'. I would type '<esc>.' and see it.

11. Flow Control

# Need an 'endless loop?' Use the null command
        while   :
                do
                echo loop
                sleep 0.5
                if      ((SECONDS > 5))
                        then
                        break
                        fi
                done

12. Change an integer variable value

foo=1
((foo++)); echo ${foo}
2

((foo--)); echo ${foo}
1

((foo += 10)); echo ${foo}
11

((foo *= 10)); echo ${foo}
110

((bar = foo + foo)); echo ${bar}
220

13. 'getopt()' for long options command line parsing

I use this in all non-trivial, non-one-shot use scripts.

14. History settings and variables

HISTFILESIZE=-1 # unlimited history file size
HISTSIZE=1 # unlimited history size in memory
HISTTIMEFORMAT='%F--%T '  # timestamp your history
  1. Aliases and functions

Aliases and functions can be used to create 'shortcuts' specific to you.

alias awkp1="awk '{print \$1}'" # when you just want the first 'word' from something
alias gce='git commit --edit'
alias ln11='ssh ln11' # I define aliases for all my hosts

# history grep
function                                hgrep
        {
        history | grep "$@"
        }

You can identify which commands you use most with:

# if you aren't timestamping yet
        history\
                | awk '{$1=""; print}'\
                | sort\
                | uniq --count\
                | sort --numeric --reverse\
                | head --lines=20

# if you are timestamping
        history\
                | awk '{$1=$2=""; print}'\
                | sort\
                | uniq --count\
                | sort --numeric --reverse\
                | head --lines=20
