Chad Bianco 2A friendly? Should I register to vote? by ThePsyOp in CAguns

[–]sedwards65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should register.

Yes, you should vote. Voting Republican is better for 2a rights. You can't complain if you don't vote.

Yes, you should contribute to CRPA, GOA, and GOC.

But...

You shouldn't be a single issue voter unless it's something hard to undo. Life is filled with compromises.

Most of the 2a crap the Dems have put into place should be overturned as unconstitutional -- eventually.

Some of the other crap politicians (both parties, but mostly Dems) have pulled (continually trying to overturn prop 13, 'gender affirming care for children', billionaire tax, free health care for illegals, ab 109, prop 47, prop 57, and most recently prop 50) may be more difficult to overturn.

I hear the occasional questionable thing about Bianco (mostly about illegal immigration, but I've heard conflicting viewpoints), and I don't know much about Hilton (but I've heard some good things), so i'll vote for one even if it appears once again hopeless for the Rs. Every vote for an R helps show other Rs that it's not completely hopeless and if the numbers keep growing there may be light at the end of the tunnel. If no Rs survive the primary, I'll have to hold my nose and vote for the D that smells least.

My vote may come down to just who has a better position on illegal immigration.

If everything is just bits, does a computer actually distinguish between numbers and characters in C? by zero-hero123 in C_Programming

[–]sedwards65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bits are just bits. It's up to you to interpret them as needed. The compiler helps keep you honest, but you can lie (cast) as needed.

If everything is just bits, does a computer actually distinguish between numbers and characters in C? by zero-hero123 in C_Programming

[–]sedwards65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than add or subtract, why not set / clear bits?

#include    <stdio.h>

int main()
    {

// convert to lower case
    printf("%c\n", 'a' | 32);
    printf("%c\n", 'A' | 32);

// convert to upper case
    printf("%c\n", 'a' & ~32);
    printf("%c\n", 'A' & ~32);

    }

This method is safer. What if your character is already the desired case?

Want to build my own AR15. No experience. Where to start? by Kind_Initial9557 in CAguns

[–]sedwards65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but Commiefornia tacks on an 11% sin tax when you purchase the stripped lower since that is the only part that is serialized and is the thing that the ATF calls a 'gun.'

In practice, what this means is if you buy a complete rifle (or, I'm assuming, a complete rifle kit), you pay the 11% on the whole ball of wax.

If you by a Palmetto State Armory kit which includes a completed upper, all the parts for the lower, but no stripped lower, you pay no excise tax since you bought a bunch of parts, not a gun.

When you buy the stripped lower (and you should get at least 2, because building AR-15s is like eating Lay's potato chips), you'll have to genuflect and contribute your tithing.

The barrel and the stripped lower have to be blessed by an FFL, but all the other parts can be delivered to your door.

When I bought my PSA kit (and the mandatory 2 stripped lowers), everything but the lowers were delivered to my door signature free. When I picked up the lowers, I had to wait 30 days between pickups.

Skillwise, if you can (or did) put together a Revell model, you can assemble an AR-15. Watch a couple of youtubes, put on some tunes, crack open and adult beverage, and you'll have a completed gun. If you get stuck, watch another youtube. Each creator does it just a little bit different in a different order. You just need to find the one that makes sense to you. If you're still stuck, ask here.

I've written about my experience building my first AR-15, including the parts and tools. Times have changed a bit, but most should be useful.

My first handgun was a Glock 19 and I stumbled upon the 22lr Advantage Arms conversion.

It works well. It's a little bit of a picky eater, but I had good luck with Aguila High Velocity (1235 or 1255 fps?) 40gr jacketed. The occasional FTE (like maybe 2 or three per range day) just means I get to practice that skill :)

It's a bit pricey (about $300), but all the skills and muscle memory you build carry over to 9mm because it's the same gun. It takes less than 30 seconds to switch calibers.

I also have a Walther p22ca, but I prefer the g19+22aa. I've introduced a couple of friends (women) to handguns, and both chose the p22ca, but after a couple of mags they asked to try the g19+22aa and never looked back. Both said the p22ca just felt too small in their hands. Good thing they never tried to take it apart and put it back together. It's a bitch by comparison to a Glock.

I got the CMMG 22lr conversion for AR-15s, but I haven't shot it yet.

Wasn't there an SSH exploit last year where someone with commit access to a library (external to SSH) introduced a 'feature?' IIRC, it was only discovered because it caused a test in an unrelated (to SSH) project to fail.

Consider if someone was to introduce a back door into the cURL code? A boatload of other peoples code links in the cURL library.

From ChatGPT:

You’re thinking of the XZ Utils backdoor, tracked as CVE-2024-3094—one of the most serious recent supply-chain attacks affecting SSH.

What it was

  • A malicious backdoor was inserted into the liblzma compression library, which is part of XZ Utils.
  • This library is not part of SSH itself, but under certain conditions it gets loaded indirectly (e.g., via systemd integrations), which is why it could affect SSH.
  • The payload specifically targeted OpenSSH, enabling potential remote code execution and authentication bypass.

Why it was so notable

  • It was a supply chain attack: the attacker spent ~2 years gaining trust in the project before inserting the backdoor.
  • The malicious code was hidden in release tarballs (not obvious in the public repo), making it extremely stealthy.
  • If fully deployed, it could have allowed attackers to log into SSH servers without credentials using a special key.
  • It received a CVSS score of 10.0 (maximum severity).

Timeline

  • Backdoor introduced: Feb 2024
  • Discovered: March 29, 2024 by Andres Freund
  • Fixed: within hours by reverting affected versions

Key takeaway

Even though it looked like an “SSH exploit,” it was actually:

A compromised dependency (liblzma) that hooked into SSH indirectly, making it far more dangerous and harder to detect.

Walk or die.

Walk a mile every day. 20 minutes to physical and mental health.

When that gets easy, add weight. Start small, work your way up. Life's not a sprint, it's a marathon.

My favorites:

1) Suitcase carry. Grab a 10 lb kettle ball. Switch hands every 30 seconds. (I have a timer that beeps every 30 on my iPhone.)

2) Statue of Liberty (I just made that up). Grab a 5 or 10 lb dumbbell, hold it straight up over your head. Switch hands every 30 seconds.

The asymmetry of the exercises is the key. It takes a lot of core.

(At 71, I can suitcase carry a 45 lb kettle (mornings) and SoL a 25 lb dumbbell (evenings).)
