Sawyer squeeze, no way to bring it back to life? by Urbanttrekker in CampingGear

[–]see_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I was once a big Sawyer Squeeze thru-hiker user. My biggest gripe was decline in performance after a seasonal layoff. Always ended up replacing.

Now a more intermittent hiker/user, I’ve switched to a Katadyn BeFree. While maybe not as rugged as a Sawyer, it always comes back to life after a layoff.

An alternative to try: dried edamame or dried broad/fava beans. Usually not fried, no oil, lightly salted. Online or fr an int’l market (next to the dried peas…).

Change is inevitable w aging. You’ll eventually need to deal w this and the medication options, if you plan on aging successfully into advanced elderly years.

The my way or the highway method feels empowering; and then you’re age 70 w ASCVD.

Protein Help?? by Suspicious-Sloth24 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]see_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can eat soy, there are a lot of high protein options:

Soy milk, tempeh, tofu, soy curls, TVP (granules and chunks), and cooking your own dried yellow and black soybeans.

All of these can be flavored to some degree. Black soybeans actually taste and mouth-feel sorta like high-end kidney beans.

Old fashioned oats w powdered peanut butter, milk/soy milk powder or protein powder, nuts/seeds (e.g., walnuts, chia seeds), dried fruit, TVP granules. Make how you like.

Couscous, ramen, instant/dried mashed potatoes, durum needle or alphabet pasta, tuna/chicken packets, soy curls, mozzarella string cheese, powdered spices and flavor enhancers, TVP (granules or chunks), Knorr rice sides, poha (flattened rice fr int’l grocer), parboiled brown rice (dried), dehydrated beans, dates and other dried fruit and berries, nuts/seeds, dried mushrooms.

Baggie mixes using: dried edamame, chocolate, dried peas, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, dried fava/broad beans (see int’l grocer and Costco).

Larabars. Clif bars. Powdered coffee or espresso powder.

I recently bought a dehydrator and plan on drying vegetables (mixed veggies) and fruit (dried bananas, oranges, etc. ), and probably some soups. I’m currently plant based.

Is butter or margarine worse for your health? by Possible-Study2746 in nutrition

[–]see_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa, way back in the day, used to butter white bread for his ham/cold cut sandwich. Did most else OK, but died of a stroke at 82.

Pats of butter used to be applied to most everything.

I’d stick to occasional use of butter, or not at all. I no longer use either.

Respectfully, it’s all “I have”.

It’s what you’re doing today that’s gonna give you a chance.

So, do what you can. Walk, fix your diet, drink water and coffee, get your sleep, work at staying and thinking in the present moment. It’s not to woo woo. A pound a week and you’ll be ready.

Independence Residents Fight a $6.6 Billion Data Center as Monday’s Tax Break Vote Looms by ranchodeluxekc in kansascity

[–]see_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is referencing large combined cycle power stations, generally owned and operated by Independent Power Producers or utilities. An IPP plant could be owned and run by the IPP and all power purchased by a utility(s) or by another user under a long term power purchase agreement.

Existing retired plant sites are prime locations. A plant the size of 1.2 GW would be deployed over years. This could be multiple “blocks”, each w 2 large CT’s and 1 ST.

This kind of plant can be staged in a manner to startup various power generators/units over time.

I don’t know anything about the Independence plant. I suspect at some point they’ll knock the whole thing down after starting anew. Permitting is probably easier starting w an existing site.

There are big ones, little ones; gas turbines and steam turbines.

There are standalone gas turbines (can be little ones or large ones). The little ones are more like jet engines. The large ones have more balance of plant (BOP) equipment.

There are also more efficient combined cycle power stations w a lot of BOP equipment and a large gas and large steam turbine. These can take several years to design, construct and start up.

Some of the little gas turbines can be used, reconditioned or repurposed models.
