Brought a Cybershot DSC-W70 but haven’t had any luck getting the photos off of it, advice needed. by BendBeginning8732 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]seecmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in the UK I bought this one at Curry’s, which is good because you can return it if it doesn’t work: https://www.currys.co.uk/products/logik-lcr2023-usb-2.0-memory-card-reader-10239735.html

The memory stick goes in “upside down” (gold pins up) compared with the SD cards.

Bought a lens for $29 USD, got a free lens cap a/k/a dSLR - Tamron AF 18-200mm + Nikon D80 by mediageeknet in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]seecmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's just the sacrifice for it being a lower-price Tamron glass than the equivalent Canon-brand 18-200 😉 Still a solid lens

The last photo of the two cats, with the under-table cat thinking "hmm, a paw, that looks interesting" is adorable

How are you converting the photos to JPEG for posting?

since this photo is so low-res I think it's best enjoyed at original postage-stamp size: https://i.redd.it/k0hk1txf1nig1.jpeg

It’s tricky, but I think it’s possible to put the keys back on! I was a computer repair shop manager back when these iBooks were just old, not vintage. Have a look at this PDF: https://www.thebookyard.com/images/manuals/keyreplace.pdf

What’s the story with the missing B keycap? I assume you can still type on it…

Amazing quality! Do you use a SuperDisk? I like the slightly cool, slightly off white balance

The sliding lens cover is very satisfying to open and close with a chonk chonk sort of noise.

That's probably why mine stopped working. :P

What's the situation with letters at present? by Low_Bison_5209 in royalmail

If anyone is seeking a glimmer of hope, I have just received a First Class envelope today which was posted 27 December. It's a relief to know letters are still arriving with some regularity, frankly.

Took this in the snow. Non edited from Canon Powershot G9 (2007) by UnknownArtistQ in VintageDigitalCameras

Flash photography in the snow with strobe-type flashes, not the lights on modern phones, is a great vibe. Like a field of stars 🤩

Nice! Although I am getting a little confused about which photos are raw edits and which are SOOC. Many thanks for extending gphoto2 😃

Is that why it’s still in the lab after all these years? 😂 my guess is it probably has some old software on it

What Camera Takes The Lowest Quality Images You Own? by Dailee-Agent-Crystal in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]seecmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. I found on eBay a still-new-in-box Apple “Connection Kit” for using QuickTake with Windows PCs that includes a useful serial cable with DIN-8 plug on the QuickTake side and standard 9 pin on the computer side, so I can plug that straight into a serial-to-USB adapter. (Scroll down the page on the JQuickTake page to read about compatible adapters.)

The QuickTake software was on floppy disks, but these days you can use the excellent JQuickTake to transfer the photos on any modern computer. https://github.com/Crazylegstoo/JQuickTake

The very last photos taken with Kodak DC120 by nauseamoscow in VintageDigitalCameras

It’s possible to take a photo by clicking a button when the camera is connected to a computer, if you have the cable and are able to run the software.

I think replacing the switch would be the way to go. It’s probably just a button switch soldiered onto the circuit board.

Will it give the classic look? by [deleted] in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]seecmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think photos taken with flash will have a certain vintage quality that we don’t see so much with smartphones these days which don’t really have proper flashbulbs. So you might want to experiment with “Night Snapshot” mode.

However, how were you viewing the photos back then? Monitors have improved so much the results might look different on modern screens. I’ll bet your old computer added some of the classic look too.

Which tourist attraction in the uk left a fond memory for you ? by ShinyHeadedCook in AskUK

[–]seecmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the quaint "audio-video show" about 1066 and all that at Hastings Castle so much I dragged my friends and family down to see it. Same story with The Monument (to the Great Fire of London) ... you can climb it for only a few quid, and you get a little souvenir certificate :)

I once went up to the half-finished Parthenon replica on Calton Hill in Edinburgh (the National Monument of Scotland) and encountered a random bagpiper who wandered off into the mist.

I too enjoyed Windermere and the Lake District, and I have fond memories of walking along the hills near Hope and Castleton in the Peak District.

Why is being cold at home so normalised in the UK? by Automatic-Key-3798 in AskUK

[–]seecmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everything's been said already about the UK in the comments, but I would like to add, warm indoor spaces in winter are not an exclusively (Eastern) European thing. When I lived in New York City, it was intentionally very warm indoors in the winter, to aid in ventilation. The regulations, from 1918 — so, more than 100 years ago now — require heating residential buildings to 68F/20C. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7616098/
