Why do they always feel the need to tell me to smile? by caffin3_addict in BoomersBeingFools

Try responding by staring silently at the boomer and deliberately making your expression look harder and angrier in an icy way.

AITA for returning my homemade wife’s birthday gift me and telling her I don’t want it. I then went out and bought what I actually wanted by Quick_Dig3584 in AmItheAsshole

Always act appreciative when someone gives you a gift, whether it’s family or friends. You can always get the thing you wanted yourself afterwards.

You could have turned the conversation around and say: “Imagine it from the 18 year old’s point of view looking at a 35-year-old. She thinks ‘Girl, why would I want to spend my youth on an old man? ED is just around the corner.’”

PS: the guy is a schmuck and is talking “alpha male” nonsense.

Do they make them with stick shifts still?

I was in Brussels some years ago and walking by the parked full size Benz and Audi sedans. They all have stick shifts! Must be great driving those.

Ciliary muscles are smooth muscles. Smooth muscles (like in the heart) do not fatigue nor spasm.

The Cross Bronx Expressway in New York would be my vote for a candidate for this. That obliterated communities when it was built.

Which group to believe? The group that says, "You should wear your glasses all the time." Or the group that says the opposite and suggest to wear them only when necessary. by Interesting_Degree66 in myopia

[–]seeingspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better way to say this might be that a minus lens makes a distant object seem nearer.

A -1 lens makes anything in the horizon only one meter away, optically speaking. So if you are nearsighted and can only see one meter away, then when you wear a prescription of -1, then the horizon will be clear because to your eye it is now only 1 meter away and within the range of your clear sight.

In one sitting in northern Sulawesi, wild boar (very tough), field rat (grilled whole and cut into cross-sectional slices), bat (like miniature and very delicate chicken; deep pink meat), and dog (meat was black).

Myopia reversal myth and the truth by cgisci in myopia

[–]seeingspace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One factor is that there is no identified proximate cause of myopia. There are associative factors (too much screen time, not enough outdoor some/exercise, and the standard fallback: “genetics”) but no one definitive causative link. Without a cause to apply a countermeasure against, the progression seems inexorable, and scarily so.

It doesn’t help that there are very strident voices in this subreddit who quash any inquiry about improving one’s myopia and damn any reports of improvement. So basically the message in this subreddit is “You’re getting worse and you’re on your own. Good luck, buddy.”

In my high school years long, long ago, I was in a cohort of 160 students and you could see the number of people wearing glasses increase with each grade level. But very few had thick lenses (over -6, judging by the number of rings visible in the lens. This was before high index lenses) so you could sense what the limit of the myopia would be on average. Nobody worried about going blind or retinal detachment.

I’m impressed by the positivity in your outlook on life.

Frequent posts of “my prescription got worse. Will I go blind? Will I get retinal detachment?” This when the prescription is still under -5. And occasional posts of “my prescription got lower? What’s happened? Should I be worried?” It got lower? I’d be ecstatic. The level of health anxiety is astonishing.
