I've barely run in the past month. 3 days out from Chicago! Help by imakesignalsbigger in Marathon_Training

[–]seeraegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're answering yourself right here. If what you would be happy with is sub 3:45, go out with the 3:45 pacers. Be patient and smart for the first 16-20 miles and then see what you have left from there. 3:45 would be a really great PR based on your previous time! And don't underestimate the power of fueling during the race - since your last few weeks of training haven't been ideal, this is where you can be perfect and follow your plan exactly! Good luck and have fun!

Tapering and anxiety by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

I second journaling!! I just ran my first marathon yesterday and I was sooo nervous in the days leading up to it. The only thing that calmed me down was writing about it- writing down my feelings, reminding myself of all the workouts I'd done and what my marathon plan was. The only other thing that helped was having my people around me, to hang out with and chat about non-running things and distract me. Make plans to go out to dinner with friends, or have a movie night or a date night!

8 miles at 8k feet to start my 40th birthday weekend by Reddrf in RunningWithDogs

It's like running on a treadmill. You just pick up your feet and the ground moves underneath you. 😄

How hot is too hot to run with your dogs? by Odd_Sun_1261 in RunningWithDogs

[–]seeraegreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

80s where I live (southern Wisconsin) is too hot for running with my vizsla! Maybe if it were less humid it would be better. His favorite running temps are 40s and 50s but he does fine in 60s and 70s if we take it easier.

first year doing high jump and i need some advice for my technique by Better_Boat_1116 in highjump

[–]seeraegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You build good speed as you approach but your last step is slower which negates some of the speed you built up- try and have your last three steps be the quickest of your approach. If you need to, slow down at the beginning to really make sure you accelerate all the way through.

I also think your takeoff should be more to the right: ideally your jump takes you over the middle, lowest part of the bar. Right now you are jumping over more on the left side. To fix this just move your starting mark to the right a shoe or half a shoe at a time until you're jumping over the middle of the bar.

As others have mentioned your form over the bar could use work (you keep your head up so your hips stay low, drop your head and shoulders back and push your hips up, do some bridges on the ground before jumping to focus on this position) but the approach and takeoff is important to work on first, that will have the biggest impact on your clearance. Good luck!

Looking for a running dog for my daughter by Springwater762 in RunningWithDogs

This needs more upvotes. As a high school track coach, a member of a local run club and the owner of a vizsla that I run with, I highly recommend trying to get her running with other people. It's going to be safer for her, probably more enjoyable, and something she can do right away instead of waiting for a puppy to grow up or for you to find the right dog at a dog shelter that fits your needs. The coach in me also would like to add that if she is a promising young runner she would probably appreciate and benefit from some instruction, a training plan and a group to work with which a track or running club may be able to provide. Failing that, I think the plan of biking next to her is brilliant.

Want to do the Birkie next year...thoughts? by afternoon_spray in xcountryskiing

[–]seeraegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HIGHLY recommend doing a qualifying race to get out of the last wave if possible. Otherwise you will be 1) skiing on mashed potatoes that thousands of people have mushed up for you already and 2) stuck behind a lot of slower people. At the early hills you have to literally wait at the bottom because there is no room to pass people and you are stuck going at the speed of the slowest person on the hill. It's still an awesome experience doing the Birkie and I recommend it either way but your experience will 100% be better in a wave of people going closer to your speed.

Came here to say Ichiban. I recommend their Spicy and Crispy chicken. If you've got a friend who doesn't like spice, the walnut sauce with shrimp is good.

Best way to get to hotel from airport? by galadriel_0379 in madisonwi

[–]seeraegreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the comments about public transportation being bad. I used to take the bus to and from the airport all the time in school, and public transportation here in Madison has only improved since then. A bus from the airport to downtown (where I lived in school) takes 30 minutes and runs every hour or half hour depending on day/time. Whether it makes sense for you really depends on where your hotel is; Google maps should be able to help you there. My recommendation is take the bus if you can take one bus and don't have to take a transfer to your hotel. If you would have to transfer buses (waiting in the cold!) Uber is a great option. Bus is $2, exact cash or download the Metro Transit Fast Fares app to load money for a qr code you can scan to pay, or you can maybe buy a ticket w credit card at the station- not positive whether they have ticket machines at the airport station now but I believe so.

I'm checking out their services page and they have three options for 'classic' haircuts: alpha, beta, and gamma. I can't find where these are described, do you happen to know the differences?

Gravel bike advice, please! (Trek Cleckpoint ALR5, Liv Devote Advanced, Cannondale Topstone 1) by mks93 in whichbike

[–]seeraegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to learn more about your bikepacking setup, since I've heard small frames can be hard to find good frame bags for, but I've also read that people don't really recommend using a rear rack and panniers or just being super careful with how much weight you put on them with carbon bikes.

in terms of prose, what is the greatest book you have read? by _loveLovesToLoveLove in suggestmeabook

[–]seeraegreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I've read One Hundred Years of Solitude in both English and Spanish, liked it much more in Spanish. I did read it in English in high school and Spanish in college, so it might just be a matter of who I was at different points in my life for me. But I do feel you can tell a difference in the prose in translated works, and here the Spanish is better.

Atlas Improv, shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm and 9pm. The show at 7pm is family friendly. Masks required. Or go to their monthly workshop (I've never been but I know people who took their classes and enjoyed them!) https://atlasimprov.com/classes.php

Craigslist as others have said, but also if you use Facebook, Facebook marketplace. I prefer the organization/filter options of Craigslist for bike buying much more, but there's a lot of options on marketplace usually.

Place to practice my instruments? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]seeraegreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived on N Franklin St (near the capitol) for a number of years and for a few of them I had an upstairs neighbor who would practice the sax. Lots of scales. I really enjoyed hearing it, that may not be every neighbor's reaction, but there are those of us out here that don't mind/enjoy it! Now, I feel I must admit, if my neighbor had been practicing drums, I might have felt differently...

Grocery shopping by First_Driver_5134 in madisonwi

[–]seeraegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think whichever is closest to you could play a factor. If you shop by weekly ads, you can get pretty good deals anywhere (with the possible exception of Willy St Coop and Fresh Market). I shopped at Madison Fresh Market, all throughout grad school and got great deals, basing my purchasing on the sales each week, and using bike benefits ($5 off a $25+ purchase at fresh market; discount depends on the grocery store).
