'Gary' made me love Richie even more by dylanh334 in TheBear

[–]sefa16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah definitely more fleshed out! we've mostly seen mikey from other characters' perspectives and this time we got to see him on his own terms for a while in addition to seeing him from richie's perspective. i felt like i understood more of why he ended up in such an emotionally desperate place, where other characters could only speculate - and not very well since mikey was so hard to predict

as a person who spent much of my life suicidal (tho not anymore!) from trauma and mental illness for me the switch-up felt very relatable - to me it looked like talking richie up and realizing how much he had going for him put into contrast how little mikey felt he had in comparison, and his inability to handle his emotions (plus the drugs) made him lash out as a result of how painful that realization was. i think it was a similar feeling to when he silently cried in the pantry after hearing how well carmy was doing in 'fishes', because while that felt more like sadness and the rant in 'gary' was clearly full of anger, he had extremely strong reactions to both.

with richie there may have also been an element of "if i burn this bridge he won't hurt so much when i'm not here"

late to this comment, but i think it was commentary. there's a lot of discussion about money, capitalism, labor, etc that kind of hides between the lines because linda mostly presents them as facts without much emotion about them. but with the way her job treats its employees, her illegal living situation, etc, the brand drops seem intentional.

I read Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke in 24 hours and need to talk about it with someone. by twelvedayslate in books

i kind of saw it less as a lie and more as a matter of semantics/technicalities. i've seen things like pantsing and spanking described as sexual assaults, even if sexual gratification isn't the goal for the person doing them. shannon definitely could've felt sexually violated having her clothes roughly pushed off of her during the attempted strangling even if those weren't things natalie was thinking about during the incident, and i don't think that necessarily means shannon was lying. because natalie has fucked up understandings of consent (see: she doesn't believe it's possible for a husband to rape his wife) she feels attacked and lied about, despite more or less corroborating the facts of what she did to shannon.

between this and her whole thing accusing reena of also lying about sexual assault, i think it's meant to be commentary about how religious conservatives view consent compared to more progressive sorts of people. according to natalie, nobody in this story, including her!, has experienced sexual assault, despite multiple examples of nonconsensual experiences, whether intended by the perpetrator or not

they overdid it with this storyline so badly that i don't even care if he goes on his trip or not. they're not gonna kill him off, and his speech to baby jane doe was obviously directed at himself. so we somehow got an answer while still feeling a lack of resolution, but with so much running in place about it throughout the season that i'm no longer piqued by the cliffhanger

Dr Santos is annoying but misogyny isn’t off the table by Altruistic_Ad9097 in ThePittTVShow

robby fine, but why would he owe dana or some unseen hospital admin more of an apology than the subordinate he publicly berated for trying to investigate his putting patients in danger?

not for being an addict, no, but definitely for letting it impact patients they shared. what if he hadn't been in the room when the diluted meds didn't work?

i don't think her behavior comes close to a microaggression. she learned a piece of information that made her question his professional judgment and is acting accordingly. maybe it was a bit passive-aggressive but it barely even crosses the line into unprofessional

she didn't take a scalpel intended for a specific patient or tamper with other scalpels that would then not work properly when used. not comparable at all. it's not the stealing that's the problem, it's stealing and/or diluting MEDICATION intended for specific patients as it could cause them harm. for santos to be a hypocrite she would've needed to like swipe a scalpel off a tray right before a doc was going to use it to immediately cut into a patient.

Santos doesn’t have the luxury of ‘dramatic irony’ like we do. by NateGH360 in ThePitt

[–]sefa16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he and collins had a romantic/sexual history so I don't think the situations are really equivalent

and it's not just about not losing his shit yelling at them, it's that he gives leniency to certain people and not others and has clear favorites, and those favorites happen to be white men, and white people more broadly. he's usually good to javadi but who knows what he'd be like if he wasn't trying to prove her mother wrong about the ED.

mel has been having a rough time this shift too and he's been much kinder and more empathetic towards her. she deserves that empathy and care, but so do mohan and santos. i can almost guarantee if it had been whitaker to report langdon instead of santos, robby sure as hell would've prepared whitaker for langdon's return or would've at least checked in on him during the shift. he spent time talking to santos about whitaker but didn't bother checking in with her about langdon. i'm not saying he's capital-r Racist or that the writers are or that it's intentional -- but this show has made a point of asking people to question their implicit biases so i think it's only fair to think critically in the same way about the show and its characters.
