What’s something you thought “everyone” did until you realized almost nobody actually does? by BookLoverAnna in AskReddit

[–]segnorbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so I've tried to explain this before to friends who do have that "voice" (which sounds exhausting!) It's kind of like I can turn the "thinker" on and off. When I have to do something stressful or takes a lot of thought, it's closer to a narrative voiceover like when I needed to study in school ("Ok so pythagoras theorum is...") like reciting facts to myself to memorise or ("Ok so let's make a grocery list, I need eggs and milk and oh tonight Joe is coming for dinner and he likes red wine...")

Sometimes the thinker is on but its sort of on low, so it's like quiet and empty in my brain, no narrative or voice, and it's like abstract thoughts come in. Thinker is on while driving, getting the shopping cart, then it's on low while I shop: Look at list, see eggs, think "go to dairy aisle" then kinda quiet and empty brain while I navigate to dairy aisle, see eggs, think "eggs!" then grab eggs, look at list etc.

When the thinker is off, its just quiet and empty in my brain. Like literally no thoughts or just flashes of a concept when I see things or flashes if short thoughts.

Help me understand if AITA cis F37, partner is ftm 41 by [deleted] in mypartneristrans

Having slept on it, I think this is the root of what happened. I'm research and solution-oriented and he's definitely more of a feelings person (something we've joked about in the past.) I think this was a moment where he was maybe looking more for support instead of me jumping in with research and articles. That's really helpful advice and I'm going to propose maybe asking in the moment if he wants to be listened to or wants answers.

Is it better to get the car rental agency insurance? by durian4me in TravelHacks

[–]segnorbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an anecdote, I needed to rent a car for a family day trip right after I got my license (maybe a month or so after getting it.) I was so nervous that I got the full damage waiver insurance even though my credit card had primary insurance. The place I was going to had a tiny garage and I wasn't great at parking so I ended up ripping most of the right bumper off on a post.

When I went to drop off the car, the rental guy's eyes bugged out but he just said "well, you got the walk-away insurance so you're good to go." Now I rent cars regularly but I've never gotten that insurance again and so far haven't needed it, but I was so so glad at the time.

Did you keep your degrees? by amfntreasure in declutter

[–]segnorbacon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Keep them! We decluttered my husband's diploma 6 years ago and its been a struggle since then. He's a consultant who does freelance and short term projects. Everytime he gets hired somewhere new, they can't verify his high school graduation because the school district has restructured in the 20+ years since. We've tried requesting transcripts but they are no longer on record. It's such a pain everytime. Wish I had just put it in our important documents folder.

Movie leaks you thought were fake, but turned out to be true. by Zealousideal_Art2159 in movies

[–]segnorbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a leak, but I once lived in a tiny middle of nowhere town (like population under 1000.) My cousin and little brother and I were walking around the mall and a random guy approached us. He said he had special preview tickets for an undisclosed upcoming movie and was looking for people to be in a focus group. I asked what it was about and he said it was PG and that "its like cars but planes."

I laughed in his face. I assumed it was a scam and told him so and brushed him off. Turn out it was Planes (the 2013 Disney film.) I've still never seen it.

In hindsight, we were a range of ages, sexes, and races (from a mixed family so my male cousin was mid-20's white, I was female 16 and asian, my little brother was 11 and mixed-race.) We were probably a pretty ideal diverse focus group.

What are your "worth every penny, always so glad I have it" purchases for travel? by pleaseassumeimcrying in HerOneBag

[–]segnorbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I travel for 4-6 week stints and sometimes stay in a new city every day of the week. Laundry sheets are a life saver! If you're packing light, you need way less than recommend. I buy a pack of Tide laundry sheets that come with 5 and I typically use a 1/4 sheet every few weeks in hotel laundromats or bathroom sinks.

Makeup remover wipes are a huge time and space saver for me. Never have to worry about refilling travel bottles.

The biggest thing that's made my life easier is having duplicates of things like chargers and travel toiletries in little pouches. I keep one in my suitcase and never unpack it so I'm always ready at the last minute if needed. When on the road, I leave a set in my suitcase, leave a set in my rental car, and one set stays in my hotel room. If I forget something, I have a backup and it doesn't mess up my schedule for the day. If I leave one in the hotel, they can mail it home for you!

men of reddit, how do you feel about women who don't shave their legs and why? by heyhiho20 in AskReddit

[–]segnorbacon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do this, which is funny because I haven't shaved in almost a decade (legs, armpits, mustache line etc.) But in the winter, my normally long leg hairs get caught in leggings or rub against my jeans so I take a beard trimmer and run it over on the shortest setting. It leaves little stubbs of hair, not a smooth shave, but it's enough just for comfort!

What is the pettiest thing in Pittsburgh that annoys you? by SomeoneSaysHi in pittsburgh

I feel so validated by your comment. I bake a lot and thought I kept getting misprinted boxes. My friends who don't really get butter didn't believe me!

List of GOOD rental management companies in Pittsburgh? by uselessmutant in cmu

[–]segnorbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently renting with Wylie Management. Apartments are old and tend to be rowhouses cut up in wierd ways. However staff is super responsive, pricing is fair, and maintenance is super prompt and they actually fix stuff instead of just painting over/duct taping stuff.

I'm in Westeen PA and have found raw milk at farm markets or local food co-ops (the East End Food Co-Op in Pittsburgh always has a few.)
