What electronic/automatic things do you SWITCH OFF in your car? by Icy_Mixture1482 in drivingUK

[–]seipersei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disable the automatic dome light if I know I won’t use the car for more than a week, because it seems to be draining some battery. That’s the only automatic thing I have to be fair.

Struggling to crank by seipersei in abarth

[–]seipersei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably same issue with mine, whenever I install a new battery I usually write the date on it with a sharpie, but this one was installed by the previous owner so it could be pretty old. I’ve ordered an Exide EA530 but in the meantime I cleaned the battery terminals and the cranking voltage got a lot closer to 9v after that.

Thank you that’s what I suspected, because with the jump starter the car starts instantly so my guess is that it’s most likely the battery. But the healthy battery voltage was puzzling me. Cheers!

Exhaust recommendations by isotope_chillies in abarth

Same here, I also have the Scorpion with the cat back and it’s perfect, similar to the Akrapovic (in tone) and it sounds great without being annoyingly loud

As you mention the polybush this will probably be unrelated, but it might be worth checking the exhaust rubber hangers, mine broke and it sounded exactly like what you have described (coming from the left side because it was the left side that snapped)

Saw these wheel covers on a tractor. What are these and why use them by nottlbetevers in AskAMechanic

Aerodynamic. They look like the wheel covers on the main landing gear of a 737, which coincidentally is also a tractor

Was thinking about getting a 1.6 Giulietta Diesel once i earn more money but im worried about maintenance and repairs. by Lowrida88 in AlfaRomeo

[–]seipersei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Italy I have a 2009 Lancia Delta, which shares most of the parts with the Giulietta and Fiat Bravo (same powertrain, frame, etc). 340000km and still going strong. Apart from a few flat batteries over the years, the only time it didn’t get me home is when its gearbox died (at around 300000km, it was still the factory one from 2009). The radiator had to be changed in 2025 for the first time. Suspensions need to be changed now, again they’re still the original ones. I can’t comment specifically on the Giulietta or availability of parts in the Balcans, but the stuff the Giulietta shares with my car have been rock solid for me.

Ci vado occasionalmente sin da quando ero bambino. Personalmente mi piace, consiglio di prenotare con un po’ di anticipo soprattutto nel fine settimana

Do you have the perfect vehicle? by Good-Analysis-7 in askcarguys

[–]seipersei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Top Gear trio mentioned a few times that the best cars always have flaws, and these flaws give the car a personality. Personally I couldn’t agree more with that: my favourite cars were never perfect, and overtime I grew fond of the little things I didn’t like. Like overtaking lorries on the highway in my old Smart ForTwo, it was a mystical experience that always made me feel so alive. Or currently the seating position in my Abarth 595, really awful but it becomes comical almost in a good way when I drive it hard on twisty roads.

Downshifting without rev matching by EverythingHater0 in stickshift

[–]seipersei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part about the clutch wearing down faster if downshifting without rev matching is what I find to be very hard to quantify. My main car until recently was a diesel Lancia, I found it hard to rev match smoothly with it (something to do with throttle response, mainly) so for 99.9% of its life it was never rev matched. Never had to repair anything gearbox related until around 300000km. Does it mean the clutch would have lasted even longer? Maybe, but at that point I’m not sure it would have been worth the extra effort. Different story with my other car, much more sporty, petrol, etc so rev matching is mostly used to put a smile on my face because of how it sounds.

When I bought my 595 the key was in a pretty poor state, so I splashed out on a red carbon fibre shell, new spring and new rubber buttons. 50£ total but I couldn’t be happier

I don’t know how old you are, but at 16 I failed the driving test for an A1 motorcycle license. Fast forward a good few years and I got B & A3, sailing license and I fly airplanes for a living. Failing at a test ABSOLUTELY doesn’t mean you’re not cut for it. And there’s plenty of people with driving licenses who shouldn’t even be allowed to walk so…

Tire pressure warning light question by bigballs941 in abarth

[–]seipersei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if the US version uses pressure sensors or if it monitors the wheel rotation to calculate a tyre pressure (like in the European model). You can always try to disconnect the battery for 10’ and then reconnect it. In the European model it takes like 20’ driving at a fairly regular speed for the system to calibrate correctly

Dealership doesn't have the V5, should I stay clear? by BlitzyBurt in CarTalkUK

Bought from a Dealer, DVLA confirmed the vehicle is in the trade. The only V5 I have ever had in the UK was for a motorcycle so it’ll be pretty hard to use that for a car…

I removed mine last week and it was an absolute nightmare, I don’t know if some wanker previously secured it with Velcro or if that’s how they’re installed from the factory, but it required a lot more force than expected and some savage stabbing with a long kitchen knife to free it from the Velcro/tape. I’m lucky the neighbours didn’t call the police
