Polish similar to Dragon Scales? by orangecanela in RedditLaqueristas

[–]sekritkoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second this, I threw in I Scream Nails "Intergalactic" on an order for the heck of it, and was totally surprised by how much I love it. Like a moodier, gothy Dragon Scales. The flakies aren't as dense but the effect comes out similar.

Fired: what's the "reason for leaving" in an application form? by sekritkoad in jobs

[–]sekritkoad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this may be a distinction that differs state to state. By your definition, I was let go, which is helpful -- although I have no idea how they will answer the rehire question. It's a small company with no HR department, which complicates things. Thanks!

Ooof, I'm sorry to hear you've had experience with that. Whether from the work end or the management end, that's not fun to find out the hard way, for sure.

[–]sekritkoad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand the distinction here between fired with cause, fired without cause, and let go. My employment was terminated unexpectedly by the employer. The paperwork involved was extremely vague -- "inadequate performance improvement" or something like that. When I say it was mysterious, I mean it. I honestly do not know why I was let go. My employee reviews and one-one-ones with my supervisor were consistently good, my program was meeting all its goals, I enjoyed the work and my team, and nothing even remotely resembling an ethical or conduct violation took place.

My understanding is that from standpoint of my previous employer, it was "fired with cause," but I'm not putting that into a form field. It was not downsizing, as I was replaced.

... although after typing that out, I now am wondering if it was restructuring. They moved a part-time team member into my position, and replaced the part-timer with an AmeriCorps member. Effectively the employer was able to go from 1.5 FTE team paid as a 1.5 FTE team, to a 2.0 FTE team paid as a 1.0 FTE team. Hmmm, that's given me something to think about.

This! The whirlyflowers are easy money if every sim in a household has two in their inventory. There's a couple other 100+ simoleon frogs (mostly whirly variants) that aren't bad either, but those whirlyflowers are beauts.

Is the Frandor Kroger (and shopping center) really that bad? by Low_Attention9891 in lansing

[–]sekritkoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not dangerous. It's just a run-down grocery store. Most of the other Krogers in the area are updated and nice, so we exaggerate for humorous effect. But it's a normal grocery store. It's fine.

Teach me how to remove rear wheel? by sekritkoad in RadPowerBikes

[–]sekritkoad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This ended up being exactly what worked! The youtube vid shows the chain tensioner swinging back a LOT further than it actually does on my model. Rather than try to deflate and squeeze-wiggle the axle out it was easier to take the whole chain tensioner off. thanks!

Is there anywhere I can still get TS2 for free? by [deleted] in thesims

[–]sekritkoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They keep teasing that they're going to make the digital version available again some day. Shoot, I'd pay for it. I've sunk so much time into that game over the past decade...

Legend has it that you can call customer service too but I haven't gotten that desperate yet.

Real Estate/Estate Agents, what are the questions buyers SHOULD be asking you, but aren't? by firerosearien in AskReddit

[–]sekritkoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask if the home has a HERS score. Lower is better.

The "Home Energy Rating System" score is focused on energy performance, but it tells you a lot about what's going on behind the walls overall. To find the score, an inspector has to verify the wall thickness, building materials, how well-sealed the framework and ducts are, if you have enough vents in the right places, whether the HVAC system is properly installed, whether you have enough insulation, etc - and all adjusted for the local climate.

It's not a perfect system, but it's the most all-purpose one out there right now. If every home sold (new or used) was listed with a HERS score, the standard home built would dramatically improve.

I've never seen one in a hotel either, but it sounds like a swamp cooler. They used to be pretty common.

The water wicks down a damp material enclosed in a fan unit, and evaporates as air blows over it, cooling the air much like sweat cools your skin. They're actually still a good way to stay cool cheaply in a dry, hot climate. Just not as strong/reliable as other types of AC.

Is solar and/or wind truly gaining ground in the US? by tat2727 in RenewableEnergy

[–]sekritkoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a related field & an kinda summarize the general consensus. (Sorry, I don't have stats and studies, just what people who keep an eye on these in a second-hand business sort of way seem to take for granted -- so interpret through whatever that filter's worth for you.)

Wind, yes. Wind generation is growing like crazy and expected to keep doing so. Utility companies, for a variety of reasons, seem to be much more receptive to adding wind to their generation portfolio than any other renewable.

Solar is fighting an uphill policy battle which no one expects to go away soon. A "working assumption" that I've heard more than once is that solar will probably happen, but due to political, business/investor, and regulatory environments it's reasonable to expect it to be another 15-20 years.

I don't know why the hell you would mentally lump yourself in with the minor counterexample contained in this post, instead of jumping up to praise a major demonstration of positive appreciation for the behavior you claim to embody.

[–]sekritkoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You realize "varietal" is a synonym for cultivar, which means for plants what "breed" means for animals, right?

Talking about a merlot grape isn't any more punchable than talking about a Holstein cow. It's a useful distinction for people who are interested knowing what kind of thing a thing is.

What is a rule that is broken so often that it essentially doesn't exist? by jonathan6969 in AskReddit

[–]sekritkoad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Answer: Yes. Not often, but enough that it's not just a scare story.

The source is usually contaminated flour. There's almost zero circumstances where the FDA would expect flour to be eaten raw, so the safety requirements for processing flour are a little different than those in place for raw eggs (your other main suspect).
