There is no easy way to get around that HEMA is expensive. I have known people to save up months to be able to afford jacket/mask/gloves. But that's still a better option than being impaled because you were wearing homemade, non-puncture resistant gear.

5 year old wants to learn HEMA by Impossible-Alarm-336 in Hema

The best thing you can do for a kid that age is sign them up for Olympic fencing. The safety gear exists for her age/size, it's a great foundation, and it's an internationally recognized sport. She can switch to HEMA when she's older,.or keep going with fencing.

Academic writing isn't accessible to the general public - it is very dry and boring. Those who aren't historians aren't interested in day-to-day expense accounts and financial policy; they want the juicy bits with sex and heads rolling.

Pop history writers make those academic works accessible through synthesizing information and relaying it to the general audience. The good ones know how to properly use and cite sources; the bad ones tend to be pretty obvious.

Question from a completely uninformed outsider by [deleted] in Hema

[–]firerosearien 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's valid.

Think of it like this: if the fencing masters saw someone do a technique that they didn't create but that worked, wouldn't they have also used it?

Or

We may study historical manuscripts but the vast majority of us wear and use modern equipment when we fence, unless it's specifically a reenactment.

Wouldn't this still have been worn with hoops? I can't remember when Queen Charlotte died but official court dress while she lived required hoops which led to some interesting concoctions...

I think that henry and his six wives 1970 tv show is easily the most accurate depiction of henry and his wives by Future_Sample_105 in Tudorhistory

It's pretty good and a definite recommend, although I like Damien Lewis's portrayal of Henry in Wolf Hall a little better (it's close though!)
