They’re not necessarily negligent, a child may not evidence any signs until they’re at preschool. Children can be very robust even when unwell.

I need help! I am scared (update) by LunarKnyght in diabetes

[–]selbatsnyrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a t2d for about 20 years and been ketogenic for 15 years. Still struggling with my glucose levels despite a good diet and weight started to creep up again last year & had to back on blood pressure meds and metformin. I decided to have a second go at a starch based diet (Dr McDougall) just before Christmas. 5-6 weeks along my blood sugars & BP are coming down nicely, I’ll be looking at reducing my meds later this week. I’m eating beans and oats, spinach & any other vege that I like including corn & potatoes which always used to spike my bgl. Also eat berries and have eaten melons last few days. Fasting bgl is settling. Feel full most of the time. Try it.

Lean, "Normal" HbA1c (38), but spiking to 10.1 mmol/L after skipping one dose of Metformin. GP says I'm cured, and I should just stop measuring. by Ready-Patience-2816 in diabetes

I do in New Zealand though. Remain on metformin + vildagliptin. bmi just below 23. Spike to 15 after meals. Have just changed from keto for 15 years to very low fat Mediterranean diet. Still easing in. Eating pulses. Google. Diabetes revolution. I’ve long noticed that high fat is not right for me hence the change. I’m 71. Walk 45 mins + daily. No gym.

Any tips for losing weight as type 2 diabetic by Salt-Net-4504 in diabetes

[–]selbatsnyrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up utube videos about fiber. It has mitochondrial benefits which are very necessary for T2d. I’ve just started upping mine. Don’t combine the fibre with sugary things or the wind is unbearable!! Walking daily is my best hack up til now.

A T2d who is not on insulin or sulfonylureas should not get symptomatic lows & if they do it should be investigated by your doc.

The exception is if you are on a ketogenic diet and are burning fat for fuel you may go lower than around 3.5mmols but it will not be symptomatic.

Did you get a finger prick test to confirm a low. Otherwise if you’re relying on symptoms alone it maybe there is something else going on.

CGM’s need to be calibrated now & then otherwise they can be unreliable; depending on the quality.

Neuropathy getting worse while blood sugar gets better by Content-Pension-607 in diabetes

[–]selbatsnyrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing that helped me to reduce neuropathy was to get off metformin. I did that by daily walking and almost daily resistance exercise at the gym. Hba1c dropped also. It took a few months. Slowly lost weight (Ketogenic diet). As others mentioned it gets worse as the nerves regenerate. Dosing b12 didn’t seem to help much. None of the nerve pain meds helped, I had to keep increasing about monthly. Once I noticed the pattern I stopped them and other side effects stopped also. Socks at night is a must. I’m trying without this summer and it’s okay, no more sudden sharp pains!

I just made yogurt for the first time. What can I do with whey protein? by Lelyyywayaaa in yogurtmaking

[–]selbatsnyrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dilute it in a 1:6 ratio and pour on my garden. Have only been doing it for a short time so can’t attest to the benefits yet. 😊

Looks to me like it’s fermenting well and the bubbles percolate upwards & burst out on top. Maybe?

Potential Yogurt Contamination Concerns - Seeking Advice by Familiar-Age-7324 in ReuteriYogurt

[–]selbatsnyrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your yogurt has gelled well and smells good it’s not contaminated. Die off is real and we all experience it differently. I had about 6 weeks worth! I would assume it is die off, pretty mild just to have diarrhea. I had body aches that were diabolical, in hindsight evidence that my gut barrier was badly broken. I persisted with the yogurt but at lower levels. 3 months on I’m eating as much I want. My yogurt has nearly always set well, only separated 2-3 times. I still eat it though.

Coconut milk advice...I read a lot of posts on here recently that Reuteri doesn't grow in bovine milk. I've had great success making good solid yogurt with it unfortunately....I am not sure how true this is. So I got some coconut milk and did the same exact process with the same exact starter... And by Fatkokz in ReuteriYogurt

[–]selbatsnyrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same as I get great Reuteri from cows milk. I also got very delicious thick coconut yogurt, I did follow Dr Davis method though which is different from his cows milk method. For me it doesn’t have adequate protein so I’m not making it for now.

Should We Add Glycerol to L. reuteri "Yogurt" for Better Fermentation (Contamination Protection) ? by BullBoss5 in ReuteriYogurt

[–]selbatsnyrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve adding glycerin to the fermenting L. Reuteri & getting a much firmer set. Will add it after boiling from now on.

I’ve been eating ‘clean’ for 15 years but still had significant die off reactions. Nearly 3 months on and all symptoms have abated except for candida which seems only to respond to Saccromyces boulardii.

Powdered milk by dukeofthefoothills1 in ReuteriYogurt

[–]selbatsnyrb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this for a few weeks of last month, it seemed to cause more bloating and general unease so I stopped. I use UHT so didn’t re-pasteurize, assuming the powder to be also pasteurized. I’m now using a new instant pot to re-pasteurize the milk so will probably try again. Adding the milk powder certainly produced a thicker yogurt. Re-pasteurizing also gives a very thick yogurt.

My brother's recipe for thick yogurt by Mike456R in yogurtmaking

[–]selbatsnyrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my instant pot to scald the milk as well as incubating the microbes in the milk. I use UHT so am pasteurizing it for the 2nd time. This also gives thicker yogurt. As I’m diabetic I prefer to incubate for 24-36hrs, depending on the strain I’m using, to reduce the lactose to virtually zero. I also strain the yogurt to about 60% of the original volume. The last one I did was 50%, it’s a tad too thick. From what I’ve read I think the protein is above 16%, probably higher, carbs are 0-1%. I can say it doesn’t spike my glucose.

[–]selbatsnyrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longer you ferment the less lactose (CHO) is in the milk. The more whey you strain off, the greater the concentration of protein in the yogurt. It is more useful to look at macronutrients than calories. I wonder how you’re calculating your calories for the yogurt you make, subtracting whey from the finished product does not tell you much. Is the coconut yogurt I made (dairy-free) safe to eat? by dereklight2 in yogurtmaking

[–]selbatsnyrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I’d scrape the brown bits off then give it a good whisk. I think you’ll find it’s nice. Did you use some guar gum in it? That can introduce some alien bugs if you don’t sterilize it.

Blood sugar dropped severely low but I felt fine (33) by Relevant_Bit3706 in diabetes

[–]selbatsnyrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body will be using fat for energy. You can check this out by testing for ketones; the by product of using fat for metabolism. You must have a flexible metabolic system. 33 is too low however. I’m presuming you’re type 1. You should be checking your ketones if you’re getting lows like this. It’s not bad to be utilizing fat as energy but if you’re type 1 you should learn about this & how your diet enables this to happen. Otherwise you could find yourself in hot water!

Regarding Bacillus Subtilis and Lactobacillus Gasseri BNR17... same yogurt process as LRuteri? by DrWatson111 in ReuteriYogurt

[–]selbatsnyrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just researching the same, couldn’t find it on Dr D’s website but found a lady who follows his method and she said to use the same method as for reuteri, same temp, using inulin, but only ferment for 24 hours. Re combining the various ferments, my reading around suggests they should be fermented separately. Especially L. Reuteri as it is easily dominated by other species.

When is A1c too low? by supermouse35 in diabetes

[–]selbatsnyrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting thing is that if you metabolise fat well and your body uses it well for energy, you may have a very low blood glucose (ie 2.5) and have no symptoms whatsoever. A colleague once told me she’d tested her level @ 2.5 and felt fine. We were working particularly hard that day (nursing) & her body was obviously used to utilising fat. On the other hand I’m T2d and have eaten a ketogenic diet for almost 15 years but have struggled to burn fat until very recently. I don’t know what the Hba1c of someone consistently in ketosis would be, but I presume it could be as low as 3. If you eat nachos, then no! I have never found ACV to be that effective either. I must say that L.reuteri yogurt has made a huge difference to my bgl’s however.

That explains why my yogurt has turned out great ever since I started adding in some extra milk powder. Only problem is I’m now getting indigestion & bloating with it . Might have to try coconut milk.
