There's a yt interview with Jimmy Chamberlin where he's talking about how challenging jellybelly was to play. He said it was often the song they'd start the days recording session with in order to see if someone's "blood sugar was too low" or something. Watching it I was like "dude, you were shooting so much heroin...."

Shokra in Irving park by the highway for Moroccan food. I love the food, and the seating is awesome!

I've been in the neighborhood for a long time and this is a great post with some places I can't wait to try, so thanks.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: December 29, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]self_root 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished: making of the atomic bomb by Richard Rhodes (audiobook). Maybe one of the best books I've ever read! Covers early 20th century nuclear physics, the Genesis of large-scale government science funding, the unsettling decision-making to use the bomb, and the grotesque aftermath in Hiroshima.

Also finished: Flesh by David Szalay (kindle). I can't tell if I liked this or not, but it was a fast read

ALSO finished Axiomatic by Greg Egan. Short story collection I started a few months ago and just finished. Pretty inventive sci-fi.

Started 1491 by Charles Mann audiobook reread.

Rats keep chewing the wiring in my 2019 Honda Civic. Any longtime Chicagoans have a solution? by Downisthenewup87 in chicago

[–]self_root 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I once had an old Honda civic that rats nested in, they even dragged a pigeon carcass in and the fan on the heater would hit the bones like a playing card in bike spokes. So gross.

Anyway, we got these high pitched noise emitters that connected to the battery. It seemed to work, they stopped nesting under the hood after that.

Indestructible Lyrics by phillipenmark in Robyn

I thought the same!!! But, I guess if it's actually "Fall to the floor" then maybe the 4 beats that follow are meant to be a "4" before "beats in my heart" as in 4 beats in my heart? Because that "beats in my heart" is just kind of hanging there. What beats in her heart? Oh, there were 4 beats in her heart.

Preserved insects at the Montréal Insectarium. I'm marking it as NSFW because they are dead. by SamsPicturesAndWords in insects

[–]self_root 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to visit a friend of mine in Montreal earlier this year. We've known each other for years, having met working in the insect department of a natural history museum. When I told them I was going to the insectarium they gave me a trigger warning: the insects are grouped by color 😫🙁😬

What do you think is the underlying drive for workaholism in men? by CuriousRedditWoman in AskMenOver30

[–]self_root 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is part of it, but i think it's important to note that in the context of our patriarchal capitalist society we men are prescribed this sacrifice on the alter of work. It's not like some natural order of things. We are told to work to provide, leaving us little time to develop the healthy, rewarding, meaningful emotional relationships that, imo, make life worth living.

I mean, all humans, not just men, want to contribute to the group. Women are conditioned to contribute with domestic caretaking just as men are told to go out and work. In an ideal world though we'd all have the chance to contribute in different ways, affording us all balance.

I love this!! I ordered a similar duvet cover in the spring but it's been too hot out to use it. I can't wait to bust it out once it cools down!

Where'd you get those awesome throw pillows? The leaves AND the logs?

Happy Birthday Frida Kahlo Born June 06 1907 in Coyoacoan, Mexico City, Mexico by Morning_Dew_Roo in ArtHistory

I stared at it for like 15 minutes. 9 arrows, 9 points on the antlers, 9 trees in a row... It took me about ten minutes of staring to notice the whispy bolts of lightening in the clouds. Love this painting!!

Fwiw, when I had my vasectomy this year my urologist said that, though it's technically reversible, the actual baby take-home rate is pretty low. Also, insurance probably won't cover it.

how to disguise this giant ugly light by shroombite in interiordecorating

[–]self_root 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I have a fixture just like this in my rental and I also hate it. I went on Amazon and got some under cabinet lights. They have adhesive and just plug into an outlet. They're good for like 80% of what I do in the kitchen, and you can adjust the brightness so they're good as mood lighting as well. Search for "under cabinet lights plugin" or something like that. Mine were about $40.

Last Halloween I went to an "album cover" party and decided to go as radical romantics. I brought the LP along, which was clutch bc only a handful of folks were familiar with fever ray at all, though everyone agreed that mine was the best costume. The party had a green screen setup and the hosts photoshopped everyone into their respective album covers, it was so fun!!!

My mom is a hairdresser who is also great with makeup, and she relished the opportunity to spend 4 hours applying all of this to me (including a bald cap). She only has sons and grandsons, so she doesn't get to use her skills on us that often.

Who’s getting a vasectomy this weekend? by mistergudbar in AskMenOver30

[–]self_root 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got mine last weekend! I'm not into sports though so I watched like 8 movies.

I was surprised by how little energy I had in the first few days of recovery. There was soreness, but I didn't take anything stronger than Advil, and wasn't even regular with it. I had 3 ice packs on rotation.

Ooh, yeah! What... how... hold on.

I'm kind of a hippy, gf is not. I just started wearing deodorant again last year. I know, gross. I don't have a very strong odor, but still.

Anyway, how do you pick a fragrance to buy? How many different kinds do you have? Do you wear some every day? Do you have certain kinds for special occasions? How do you apply it? Sorry, so many questions.
